Dear Susan, As a dyslexic, I thank you in the extreme. I am now 70. A few teachers helped me greatly. 7th grade remedial reading for a year and 20,000 "sound it outs" helped greatly. Some of us though have fantastic directional abilities. Lots of other gifts also. I still cannot spell well at all. I never pass a single spelling test. I can, however tell great fiction stories, and see complex problem and solutions. Thanks again, I will spread this about.

I am 52 and cried while watching this video. I was 11 months older than my gifted sister and struggled through school more than likely because of Dyslexia and ADHD. I was disciplined in many ways because of missing words on spelling tests, having problems in learning to tell time, memorizing multiplication tables, switching b's and d's, and still to this day left and right. I use my wedding ring. I work at a college as an executive assistant, and I struggle in my job, so I use aids. I am in college and do well verbally in the classes until testing. I will have an A+ until I take the written timed final exam which will bring my grade down a letter usually end up with B or A-. I also have a young adult still struggling with ADHD. Oh and I can't spell....And I pronounced Christmas "trismas for years"...

Only a few teachers (after I was tested post 5th grade) knew I had dyslexia. I was a C student in all of my schooling (some Bs and an occasional A in a subject that I really liked). I graduated high school with a 3.1 GPA and an SAT that wouldn't allow me to get into the closest university. So I went to a local college and majored in IT...which quickly changed to an AA in Art (graphical design)...but my ADD didn't like sitting for long periods of time. Never-the-less I studied more IT at a tech college next door to the local college, while I worked part-time in IT at the local college. Then I went to a university (still not the one closest to my house) and got a BBA in Marketing, finishing as a C student. I never told anyone that I have dyslexia (mild) and ADD. Just a note to any teacher out there watching this...if you know someone has dyslexia, do not call on them to real aloud. When I was called to read (from the beginning until college...and even in church small groups on Sundays) I would be hit every time by an emotion....suddenly becoming hot and uncomfortable in my stomach; like when you were a child and did something wrong and immediately got in trouble and scolded for it. For me, that feeling has always been there from the moment I was called on until a little after I finished reading (not immediately after). The ONLY thing I was able to do to make myself feel better is to count ahead however many paragraphs until the teacher called on me to read. I would pre-read my paragraph so I'd be ready to read it when it was my turn. It helped a little so that I didn't seem like a slow reader (though I still wasn't as fast as others) but the overall emotional feeling was still there regardless. My favorite classes were ones where the teachers would let the students that want to read aloud, do so. I NEVER volunteer.

I'm a teacher, I never make children read out loud in front of the class, ever. I incentivise them by giving them points if they do, and being kind and creating a positive atmosphere in class means that eventually they all volunteer, even if it takes months. I always bear in mind that most children with send issues are traumatised and anxious around formal learning environments due to past bad experiences.

I have the same. I also learned to read and write English as an 'adult'. (more like after high school) a soon as I left high school it finally clicked after watching series and talking with English people. Its school I hardly could get a positive mark... My native language (dutch) is still a challenge for me. English is much easier in some way. Not sure why.... (I don't imply that this comment is without spelling mistakes btw hahah)

My incubator and sperm donor knew there was an issue, and deliberately did nothing - Instead, I was treated like a dumb dog, neglected and scapegoated. It was 7th grade, when my math teacher told me I was reading numbers backward. Of course I had to figure out waaay later on that I'm an ADHD'r 75% of my life was so upside down, they knew it, and I was a source of entertainment shunned, humiliated, lonely, isolated and alone. It feels comforting now at 37, that I can recognize this in others, and treat them with patience, compassion & understanding, because I was and still am one who fights the good fight

Son who was Very bright, had trouble with reading and someone suggested going to Dyslexia office in town. That person was helpful and suggested youngest child get tested by school for dyslexia and me also and older one and I for ADD. It seemed very foreign to me. School said no such thing as dyslexia. They finally tested and he was below grade english, writing, but 4 grades ahead in math. They had no help. Why arnt teachers taught to help?? Son couldnt recall phone # till we sang it, so we tried to find things that help.

Great presentation. I'm not sure how old this is. My father is dyslexic, but (oddly enough) many of the symptoms I have are the extreme opposite of a lot of what's discussed here (great with words, writing and language, CANNOT read numbers, speak easily or do math). Extremely directionally challenged. I still use the L in my mind to differentiate between Left and Right. Righty tighty, lefty loosey! We are planning a family right now. I'm so glad I saw this!

Hi, when they said wired differently with Dyslexia, that is true among us. The gifts and distractions are vastly different, some difficult and some are easy to beat. It does take real work. Some difficulties perhaps get a bit better some not at all. Good luck on the quest.

Im 35. I can read and understand if i read at spoken space but hooked on phonics did not work for me. All the tutoring and special classes and I still cant spell. I used spell check 3 times so already makes me look so stupid. As a kid when was tested I had well above average IQ, I was good in math and loved science. I end up dropping out and getting my g.e.d . Flying colors in math and science just hardley passed the writing part. My story is almost identical to Ben's but i dropped out. I had no support from home or school. Lucky for me my job is all geometry and little writing.

Dear Susan, I have suffered with Dyslexia all of my like and I'm 60 years old. My biggest problem is, not being able to look at someone when I talked to them. When I lead my bible study and when sometimes I have the opportunity to present a sermon or when I witness to people about Jesus, I have to read everything, and have to read through my material about four times before I feel confident enough to present it. Because I have suffered with Dalexia all of my life, it threw me into PTSD. What would you suggest with this problem?

There are no studies supporting that. Satz, P., & Fletcher, J. M. (1987). Left-Handedness and Dyslexia: An Old Myth Revisited. Dear Sue. Thank you so much. I'm 54 but went back to college 7 years ago. My two teachers seen it and had a psychologist who did testing test me. I now know what was wrong with me. I went from not completing high school to getting my high school diploma. I graduated with honors and a 86%. Then went to get my Medical and dental office administration diploma and graduated with a 96% average. But what I can't find is any info on the social and relationship difficulties that come with dyslexia. My family tells me I need to be on depression medicine because I act differently around them because I'm always on my guard not to do anything wrong to upset anyone but this is only my family. I have to keep myself stress free as possible and not to be alone for to long and we'll being around negative people well drives me nuts. Is there anything or somewhere I can get info to so my family I'm normal Sandra

It depends on what your job is and how bad your dyslexia is. I personally NEVER told anyone that I have mild dyslexia and ADD (diagnosed around 11 years old)...until I was written up a few times for not staying on task at work. I finally decided to tell one of my managers that I have ADD, so I find it hard to stay on task. I was fortunate that the manager I spoke with has ADHD and takes medication for it, though I didn't know this at that time (I don't take medication). While I was there, I started to walk away then I turned back and told him, "Also, if my numbers are wrong sometimes it's because I have dyslexia". My managers were very open about it and nothing else was said. While at work, they do check on me to see if I'm staying on task but not watching over my shoulder or anything....and they haven't done it in quite a while. As for your situation, it will depend on how open your boss and co-workers are about it. After having watched this video, take some highlighted points and write them down. Then consider presenting those points (along with scientific documentation) to your boss....ie. the left side of the brain is the same as an average non-dyslexic person, while the right side of the brain is 10% larder (on average), thus you may think more creatively. And that 20% of the US population are found to have some degree of dyslexia...according to studies. And if you have ADD or ADHD, consider telling your boss that also. If you have this, it seems to me like CBD oil (under the tongue so that it bypasses the digestive system...which will typically break it down) helps me with my ADD, anxiety, and helps me focus. Also, throughout the day, I use a slim vape pen with organic CBD oil and the pen uses a glass canister, not plastic. I DEFINITELY know when I don't use both the oil drop under the tongue and vape. I get pretty high strung without it. But maybe you don't have ADD.
