You've said "engage" more in this series than Patrick Stewart has in his entire career. Love your videos.

Thanks for sharing in your unusually lucid and clear style. I am building a solid foam core flying wing and need to drill spars through to join the halves and this video has given me some ideas on how I might do it.

Mmmmman your intelligence quotient shines! Such a pleasure to watch. I 've seen so many videos that had some good meat in them, but were marred by music over the voice (?for the life of me!?), lack of knowledge (the thingamajig here), or just out and out misinformation. None of that here. The truth is all the people who posted "did a better job than I did".....hahajahajaahajahaajahja! You rise immediately to the top friend.

very Clever carbon arrow and piano wire install.. I did add a small lamp tube to the end of the carbon arrow, sharpening the end, as a drill. great, quick, build. I appreciate ya

I totally see what you're talking about also worried about that some initially, but I've had no separation or problems yet. Could be the hinge tape-over reinforces it, or that it's just such a long, broad area to glue that it distributes what pull-apart forces there may be. I will let you know. I have approaching 100 flights on the original Synapse including 4 crashes and many breakdowns and setups, so I will investigate carefully and report any problems.

Yes, exactly, just a double layer of duct tape (or better, vinyl tape) as the hinge, then wrap around that on each wing root to secure. I cut all CF with a diamond cutoff wheel on a Dremel type tool. Sounds fancy but only $5-10. Cuts CF like hot knife through butter!

Congratulations and many thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiments about foam work on rc gliders and planes. I 've seen "overlength" models. My question, if you allow me to ask, is how wide can be the wing of a synapse foam board while staying "flyable" ?

thinking I might make a couple of these for slope combat.

Hey Ed, great videos and build techniques. Started my two Armin wings for the Synapse. Looking at the beginning of the Method A video it looks like you just duct taped the wings together at the joint. Is that all there is or did you glue as well? Did not really see that covered on any of the vids. I am going for the one piece wing on the first one. Thanks again for sharing.

In this plane both the chord and the wingspan are dictated by the 20" x 30" foamboard dimensions. You could maybe eke out about 1" more chord than the 9" (7" airfoil + 1" elevon) you see here. If that were no factor I think the challenge would be engineering the spar. I've done up to 10' wingspan, but that was a straight wing. Just pulling it out of my arse, I might say 7' wingspan might be attainable with foamboard swept wing using these techniques?

How do you join the wings if you want to make it a foldable wing? just a layer of duct tape on the lower surface? also you dont mention it, but with the carbon tube inside the other carbon tube, do you have any problems cutting the outer tube? any tips for that to stop it from splintering? tape it up perhaps?

Thanks.. another question mine doesn't seen to wanna fly at all does it have to do anything with the fact that my pusher motor is mounted near the cg of the wing

Ed, I have a concern of your recommendation at 1:28 of leaving the paper attached on the underside of the wing from the rear of the formers to the trailing edge of the control surface. My concern is of the paper separating from the foamboard at the trailing edge glue joint, due largely to that being the location where the paper would end due to the beveling of the control surface. Is this an issue?

I just duct tape it together, with nothing else between the wings except the spar. you could glue in some gift cards or secondary spar if you were concerned about any torsion between the wings, but I don't. Vinyl tape may be the next big thing, better than duct tape, so stay tuned.

Well, it doesn't fundamentally matter if the motor is near the CG but it does make me wonder if your CG is too far back if it's near the motor, if you built your Synapse like mine. Even in my shorty versions the CG is a few inches forward of the motor. Want to PM me with an email and/or pix?

Hi Ed, The closest spar I can find is 750mm in length which just falls short of 30 inches by 1/4 of an inch each side. would that do or should I make my wings shorter each side to Compensate?
