Heh, I also filmed a close-up shot for that bit, of of the washer mostly-buried in the snow, and then accidentally moved & buried by my efforts to find it. It didn't end up working out well enough for me to leave it in, but what's funny is that you can hear me in the footage realizing that I actually did bury & lose it for real. Maybe I'll throw that online for giggles. Also, I realized after uploading this that I missed a great opportunity to have a certain Weird Al song playing in my van as I drove away.

Good job with this video. Lots of good advise with thoughtful and comprehensive explanations. I'd like to pick your brain, please. Since you've worked a lot with shotgun pistol grips, I wonder if you've ever needed to hack a grip for a particular gun. I have a Savage 320 / 20 gauge (told it was a Winchester 1200 copy) that I've been trying to fit with a pistol grip. I've tried ATI and a Phoenix Tech but neither fit. Next I'm trying a Hague Tamer for Remington 870. The face of the receiver looks flat and the curve of the grip for the trigger guard looks like it my fit. Any suggestions? Thanks

I've never had to hack up a grip to fit an uncommon shotgun. A big plus with the 870 it that it has incredible aftermarket support; pretty much any accessory in existence is offered in an 870 version. However, I do know that 870 stocks and grips can be adapted for the Stevens 320. The general concept for how the stocks & receivers mate is the same for both shotguns, but the 320's stock tenon is shorter and a different shape. It takes some carving to re-shape an 870 stock tenon to 320 dimensions, but it's do-able - at least for the 12ga. See this album for a good step-by-step: imgur.com/a/wRsK2 I don't know if the 20ga 320s are built on the same size receivers as the 12ga models. If not, the Hogue Tamer might not work for you, as it's only offered for 12ga 870s. But the Hogue grip does have a solid tenon that shouldn't have a problem with being modified, so that's a good thing. Some other 870 pistol grips have skeletonized or hollow tenons that can't be re-shaped as easily. However, the Tamer is designed to fit around the back of the 870's trigger guard, and you may have to remove a fair bit of material to maintain good access to the 320's rear-mounted slide release (I am really not a fan of the 1200/1300-style slide release design).

Great idea, I noticed you don't have the raptor grip in your pistol grip review line up, would it be possible to do that one too?
@SynchronizorVideos

I would like to try a bird's head-style grip like the Shockwave Raptor, or the similar one from SpeedFeed, to see how that style compares to the more conventional grip shape of the four I already evaluated.

Would love to hear what you have to say about the tac-14 and upcoming tac-14 marine magnum.
@SynchronizorVideos

Broad-strokes, I think they're cool range toys; a way to get an SBS without going through all the NFA paperwork & expense. I wish they had detented barrels and non-dimpled mag tubes, since a 14" barrel on an 870 is a good match for most +1 magazine extensions, but it's still pretty easy to add an extension if desired. I don't think they'd be a good choice for real defensive use. I don't plan on getting a Tac-14, but I did order one of the Shockwave grips, and I have a Magpul fore-end, so I can assemble a "Tac-18.5", and I'll be trying that out in the not-to-distant future. I suspect I'm not going to like the Magpul fore-end with that bird's-head grip, as that fore-end tends to move the support hand pretty far forward, and that's not usually a good thing with a pistol grip. I've heard similar opinions from other Tac-14 owners.

What are your thoughts on InRangeTv's video on pistol grip shotguns for home defense?
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with pretty much all their conclusions, and I think that video does a really good job of making its case. Pistol grips suck for home defense; they're not useless, but they're decidedly inferior to the same shotgun with a proper stock. And if a very short overall length is required for some reason, there are plenty of folding stocks on the market for popular platforms like the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. The one thing I would dispute in that video is the idea that pistol grips are always unpleasant or painful to shoot. That is certainly the case with some grips - especially the cheap hard plastic units with poorly thought-out ergonomics - but there are some better-designed, higher-end pistol grips that are reasonably comfortable and fun to shoot. Doesn't really make them any better for practical applications like home defense, but they can be a good time at the range.

The screws are too short I read something online about it being like that and you have to like take some peace off and it's hard to understand without pictures and things like that but I'm sad though cause it looks good and I want it on there so you think I just need to get a longer screw? It came with two but they're both the same and then there's a washer
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 7 жыл бұрын
I've found that a lot of aftermarket pistol grips come with screws that are shorter than ideal. Luckily, 870 stock bolts use a common 1/4-28 fine thread, so longer screws are pretty easy to find. Same here. My old "#36" Police walnut stock is my favorite, though it could use a modern recoil pad. A pistol grip is fun for playing Rambo occasionally, though.

My 870 came with a recoil pad that was as hard as a rock. I swapped it out with a Limb saver. Otherwise it, like all me firearms are wood and blued steel. Just me but a rifle that's made of plastic just dosnt feel right.
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 7 жыл бұрын
A polymer stock can be nice on a utilitarian gun if you're looking to keep weight down & minimize maintenance. The black Express stock you see in the beginning of this video is actually lighter than that Blackhawk pistol grip, and it's really comfortable to shoot with the SuperCell recoil pad (I also upgraded from the factory chunk of tire rubber). I do much prefer the look and feel of real hardwood, though. I need to get around to fitting a recoil pad to my wood stock, so I'm not forced to switch stocks whenever I go out slug shooting.

A pistol grip with a folding stock is a much better idea than a pistol grip by itself if you need a defensive shotgun that can be stored in a tight space.

@@SynchronizorVideos random question. I picked up a 870 From a Pawn shop not too long ago, it had the Law Enforcement Only Folding stock/pistol grip. the pistol grip part is damaged and unusable, I like the novelty of the LEO only folding stock, any idea where i could get a replacement Remington branded Pistol Grip for it?
@SynchronizorVideos
@SynchronizorVideos 4 жыл бұрын
@@matt_1984_ I don't think Remington's been making those for awhile. If you want the genuine article, I would suggest watching sites like Ebay or Gunbroker. I've seen vintage parts pop up there before. There are some reproductions of those old LE folding stocks. Might also check sites like Numrich, Brownells, or Midway to see if they have parts. If they do they might be replicas, which doesn't sound like it's what you're looking for. On the other hand though, a genuine 30 or 40-year-old plastic pistol grip might not be in great shape either. Not sure what this has to do with my van, though...

I have, actually, especially with the ad problems that have been plaguing firearms channels recently. My revenue hasn't dropped as harshly as some other channels have been reporting, and I also don't depend on my channel as a primary source of income. However, less income from the channel means less time that I can justify spending on new videos, and limits what I can actually afford to do. I've had lots of ideas on the drawing board for some time now that just aren't realistic with my current budget. Stuff like comparative impact-testing of plastic & aluminum 870 trigger plates, BBTI-style chronograph analysis of the impact of barrel length on shotshell velocity, blind human tests comparing the recoil of fast- and slow-burning shotshell powders, high-cycle testing of the different 870 carrier dog follower springs, videos looking at smaller-gauge 870s & 870 clones, or more in-depth gunsmithing stuff like mag tube dimple removal. So yeah, Patreon has been on my mind for awhile, and the recent drama with KZbin is making it more of a priority. I'm not sure what I could offer as rewards though, since I have no intention of ever hiding any content behind pay-walls. Previews of upcoming stuff, probably, and maybe the ability to vote on topics. If Patreon lets folks put money toward specific project proposals, that would be really cool.
@Crlarl

***** You're under no obligation to provide rewards for supporters. There are time and effort inexpensive rewards you can consider: Pick future topics and previews (like you said). Ian and Karl from Forgotten Weapons and InRangeTV have monthly-ish q&a videos which don't require much editing work. Regardless what you decide I'd still fund you.

I know rewards aren't strictly required, but it'd still be nice to be able to offer something to any folks who go above & beyond to support me. If/when I get around to starting a Patreon, I'll post a video announcing it.
