Synology DS216+ II review - entry level NAS server for power users

Why are there dislikes? This review is excellent!

While we could argue about the extent to which it hurts the review, I can see two reasons for the dislikes. - The accuracy of the reviewer's pronunciation leaves to be desired. - Much of the text we see is in a language other than English (I think it's Polish).

There's something somewhat similar that's called DAS (for Direct Attached Storage). Essentially it's the same cluster of hard drives that supports various RAID configurations but instead of connecting to the network, you connect it to your device over USB or thunderbolt... but I've never had one so I don't know if this would actually work with a console.

The wireless network at my place is served by two Ubiqiti UAP AC access points (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqTEnKiojLiiqtk), which are managed through a piece of software called UniFi Controller. You can install this software on your desktop/laptop computer but you might as well run it on something like an RPi. x86 Synology NAS servers support virtualization enabling you to run such software in a Docker container.

Już obejrzałem kilka twoich filmów i nurtuje mnie jedna rzecz. Dlaczego Synology a nie na przykład Qnap albo WD? Sam rozglądam się teraz za NAS-em i bardziej przekonuje się do Qnap-a.

5 lat temu, będąc pod wpływem lektury licznych wątków na forum pronas, Synology było dla mnie synonimem NASa. Dlatego zaczęło się właśnie od DS212. Nieśmiało poznawałem DSMa, uruchamiając kolejne co bardziej zaawansowane usługi: serwer www, serwer poczty, serwer DHCP z bootowaniem po PXE, iSCSI... 'power user' pełną gębą ;) Jak przyszedł czas na zmiany, pozostałem wierny marce, częściowo ze względu na wygodę migracji w ramach tej samej linii produktowej. Ale nie jestem w żadnym wypadku fan boyem - zerkam nieraz na ofertę firmy Qnap i jestem pod wrażeniem innowacyjności ich rozwiązań - M.2, SSD i HDD w jednym pudełku, karty sieciowe 10 mbps - jest moc... prędzej czy później pewnie będę miał okazję pobawić się jakimś Qnapem i bardzo jestem ciekaw jak wypadnie w konfrontacji z dobrze mi znanymi reprezentantami ze stajni Synology ;)

U mnie ostatecznie skończyło się na WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra, a powodem była cena. Udało mi się kupić nowy NAS w wersji 4TB za 850zł. Używam go już jakiś czas i jak na razie jestem zadowolony. Do użytku domowego wystarczy :) .

Sure, the best way would be setting up iSCSI target and mounting it like a regular storage device - you can install games onto it and such.

Very interested in the ups because I’m clueless which UPS to get in regards to potential expansion bay and other devices plugged into it. E.g. router, Xbox.

I have a 10 port PoE switch and DS1019+ connected to a basic CyberPower UPS - it's good to power both for 15-20 minutes. If you want to connect an XBox, you will need a larger unit as it will drain the battery pretty quickly.

YetAnotherTechChannel thanks for the reply. which cyberPower model do you have and the cost? I can forget the Xbox. I can’t afford a smart one. May I ask if it worries you. Power outage which will break your NAS. And if you aren’t home during those 20 minutes then once the battery has depleted, doesn’t it pose the same risk of breaking the NAS or am I wrong? One final question why do you have it hooked up to your switch and NAS?

I noticed some non-English text in your video, so I'll assume that you left the article out because it's not used (in similar sentences) in your native language.

For the purpose of making the video, I felt more comfortable to share a picture of my cat rather than my wife ;) That non-English text is Polish which is completely different from English. We don't have articles and I know I often forget to include those ;) Thanks, it takes a lot of time to make those videos in English so I really appreciate that someone finds this acceptable :)
