This thing is awesome! With so many different packages, you get into a unit that allows you to use it for pretty much anything. It's good that they have so many other NAS products for people that want to expand, rather this one is for people who are content with 4 bays. Smart stuff from Synology honestly. For people that want to expand, go check out the DS923+ or DS723+. Those are perfect for small businesses.

$370 for a diskless NAS. Definitely outside my price range especially for an ARM, non-expandable system.

Go check out the DS723+ if you want to expand, this NAS is obviosly designed for people not planning to expand it. Rather just run small media servers and such.

Great video. Would you recommend this as an option for self hosting ARM based app created for testing purposes?

I wished you had shown booting the station and real noise level because my experience with some synology disk stations were really annoying...

Damn thing's £500 without drives. It's a plastic shell with a metal cover and an SBC - add a WD Red 8TB and this shoots up to over £1020.

Can I use different hard drive size? i.e 4TB in one bay and 8Tb in another bay

I just want to know if I can put my existing Synology SHR drives into it and they be readable. My 1815+ finally died after years of limping along using a PC PSU due to Synology's horrible quality. I'll buy it, retrieve my data, and then use it as an untrusted backup device.

Your video description says Rockchip. Isn't it a Realtek SOC?

Well, I think this might be the one for me. I’m a complete novice with this sort of thing If I do go for it this will be my very first NAS. Anyway, I’ll try it, hook it up to the iMac and see how it goes What harm can it do?

That's too slow for anything but serving files, I don't know why Synology didn't just sell it for what it is

It may be sufficient for running Docker apps. Need to upgrade to the 423+ and max the RAM though. 2GB is not sufficient.

I'd like to see this with 8 cpu cores, and at least 4 gpu cores. 8 Gigs of ram would be nice as well. All flash array would make it speedy, and use very little power.

cool video...but my pi 4 8gb does a lot more than this. the price is not justified here tbh.

I like seeing ARM getting some mainstream attention. I picked up an Orange Pi Plus to use as a NAS (NVMe to 5xSATA) and 2.5Gb router. For now, though, I'm using it as my desktop for a while.

ARM is and has been growing steadily. Although, it's not always easy to spot. Apple's M1 and M2 are ARM but they only licensed the instruction set. The processor itself they designed themselves. That all being said, my hope is the RISC-V open design, rather than ARM, will take off. It's trying to.

Arent those drives just rebranded WD drives 🙄🤔
@copperhead100

Toshiba actually. But yeah, it has to be a rebrand. There's no way they started making their own hard drives.

Synology now has Seagate drives too (rebranded, of course) so you have two choices in their branded drives. Toshiba being the other. BUT, it's probably better to get actual Seagate drives and opt for the Ironwolf Pro series because they have almost double the warranty period of non-Pro. Try to avoid WD NAS drives. I hear they are using SMR instead of the more reliable CMR. SMR is abysmal. I can't believe they would sink that low.

@@markconger8049 RED pro are CMR, thats what im using in my HP microserver gen8 curently (got a very good deal on them), before these i used toshiba P300 3TB that are CMR with no problem

Wow $370! I would spend £35 on a raspberry pi and £140 on an Argon EON case. This product makes no sense.

I like your video.... but I hate this joke of a NAS. Way to weak and very little upgrade path (well, really, NO upgrade path). It just sucks.
