I definitely felt the air of “the end” with this episode. With the glaring exception of Ted, most of our main cast finally slayed their respective dragons in this episode. Roy’s tendency to self-sabotage, Nate’s desperate need for approval from a father figure, Rebecca and the power Rupert had over her…that’s all been conquered. I think they’re clearing the way to focus on completing Ted’s arc in the final few episodes. Amazing. I’m going to miss this show a lot. Regarding Rupert’s mini-redemption, I think we’re supposed to take from this that his self-image has been rattled by Nate’s rejection of him and his ways. When the person he was grooming to be his star walks away from him in disgust, that’s a sobering mirror that his ego just can’t cope with. He’s let go of the assistant that he was having an affair with, and hired someone who won’t tempt him, so he can tell himself the lie that he’s a good man. I also think this is why he’s reaching out to Rebecca. She sees him for the monster he is, so if he can kill her with kindness, then he can feel good about himself again. But of course, ultimately, it is all selfish. He’s still trying to cheat on his wife. He’s still trying to own Rebecca. And it’s all for the purpose of making himself feel “good.”

While I love Sam Richardson who plays Akufo and the character is very funny, I just have trouble believing a Ghanaian being so brash, bad tempered and arrogant, when Ghanaians are the most laid back, nicest and humble Africans you will find. The character of Sam in Ted Lasso was meant to be Ghanaian originally because the character was named after Sam Richardson who is Ghanaian and friends with Jason Sudekis. They cast Nigerian British actor to play him and the actor ask them to change the character to be Nigerian because he felt it was easier for him. So as an African it doesn’t seem realistic that the Nigerian is the quite humble person and the Ghanaian is the brash arrogant person, if you know the African cultures.

It helps me to try to stay aware of the passage of time in this show, a lot of it is streaming past. 10 games in a row? Is that 1or 2 matches a week? So weeks have passed, definitely over a month between episodes. Stuff happens in between we are not privy to immediately. Did Nate confront Rupert? Rupert went from Miss Cake to Miss Bread (there's a metaphor there) -did Nate rat out Rupert to Becs or threaten to? I loved Nate sneaking in and setting up the kit to apologize to Will- I think that was in direct response to Nate's Dad saying he thought he had to push him-Nate realized that's what he did to Will, including his internal reasoning (excuse) for having abused Will. The way Rupert was played this episode had some wonderful shades of regret, I felt that he had loved Rebecca once and he is realizing what he has lost, including his youth. Still a douche, a narcissist but shown to be not the psychopath that Akufu seems to be. Weird detail, but when Rebecca sees the rich men as little boys, Akufu's assistant, Francis, is still an adult. I just wonder why that choice was made by the writers. A lot of time and space was given to breathe and i personally dug it. Thank you, Miss Beautiful and Mister Handsome!

Thank you for the great comment, and the wonderful observations. Now I’m even more curious about the creative choice of keeping some me children and yet others still adults. Maybe it has something to do with the men at the table being actual threats to her.

Regarding Rupert, when Rebecca rejected him at the end, the look on his face - it seemed to be him finally recognizing what he sabotaged and lost. I think as terrible as he is/was, there was a sincere reason beyond her looks that he married her. He, in his narcissistic way, loved her once. And he'll never get it back. I think it was a subtle show of defeat and he'll continue to lose more in the last couple episodes. Maybe he'll make some changes to be a little less evil, but I'm not really anticipating that.

I also find it curious that we are in fact seeing less and less of Ted himself as the season continues. Are they preparing us for him leaving Richmond? Showing that (most) characters have grown and gotten to a comfortable in their lives off the pitch & locker room, and that they don't need him physically as present because they have to some extent all internalised the Lasso way? Personally, I think each episode we've had is a chapter of Trent's book and it ends in a narration. Doesn't make the most sense but this is what my brain has decided is happening.
