The First Unforgivable Curse was the Imperius Curse. It completely removes "Will" from the victim. Allowing them to be completely controlled by the user. It places them in a euphoric trance and they will happily leap into a Volcano if the user wants them to

That's correct also in the book we see what we later find out Barty Crouch Junior using the imperius curse on Harry and Harry actually fighting it off. Especially like this little scene in the book because you get this little dialect with this voice in his head saying you need to jump but I don't feel like jumping great internal dialogue.

And that was what victor krum was under in the last task where you saw his eyes turn white. Moody had placed him under the imperious curse so that he could use him to clear Harry’s path to the cup. Victor attacked fleura (the only girl champion) then when he ran into Harry he just turned back without doing anything to him. Krum then was in the middle of attacking cedric when Harry showed up and stopped Cedric telling him victor was bewitched, Harry could tell from how he had acted with fleura. Voldemort also used the curcio curse on Harry in the last bit and the imperious to try to make Harry bow but Harry in the book had actually been very good at breaking thru the imperious curse I think the fact that Harry is very strong willed is one of the reasons he can actively break thru that curse.

Voldemort used all 3 unforgiveable curses at the end, displaying how much he disregards wizarding rules. He uses the controlling curse (imperio) when he forces Harry to bow to him. He uses the torture curse (crucio) to torture Harry. He tries to use the killing curse (avada kedavra) on Harry, and orders Pettigrew to use it on Cedric.

@@Syntell Also, regarding the memories - it isn't so much that Dumbledore is having trouble remembering, but that there are so many things going on, so many responsibilities that he has, that he has trouble focusing on some details and seeing things clearly. There's never any indication in the books that this method removes someone's memory, just that it pulls a physical copy. The Pensieve bowl allows them to view the memories as a virtual experience. It's a tool they will bring back in the movies, but there was even more in the books that they used to show flashes of the past that didn't end up making the cut. Cool as a literary device though.

IgorKarkaroff also abandons his role as headmaster of Durmstrang and goes into hiding at the end of the book (and is killed by Death Eaters between books, not mentioned in the films). Since he and Snape both betrayed Voldemort (Snape deflecting to Dumbledore and Karkaroff selling out his friends in exchange for being let out of prison) so they're likely to be targeted first now that Voldemort is back. That's also why he chats so much with Snape in this film - they both bear the Dark Mark, which Voldemort also uses to call his Death Eaters as we see in the graveyard scene, so they can see that he's been more active

Half of that book was left out, and I get why, pace, but I still adore the stuff that was cut out. This book is a dark detective story, so I was very surprised when "the murderer" was revealed immediately. 😳

Syntell's really getting into the story! It's like we're watching it again for the first time when we see someone who's picking up on so much of the significant stuff, and expounding on some of the themes that they're presenting in the movie, without spelling it out. The editing is a little discombobulating, but only because there are a couple of scenes skipped over that seem relevant to the larger story. It's easy to get distracted by some of the more unusual things, like Voldemort's nostrils... wish I could tell you his nostrils had more significance in the overall story🤣

The second unforgivable curse used in the classroom was the Cruciatus Curse. It is the torture curse, causes unbelievable pain. "Moody"/Barty chose Neville on purpose to see this curse, up close, in the classroom. Neville's parents were tortured with this curse by Deatheaters. So much so that they went insane. That's why Neville lives with his grandmother. "Moody"/Barty wanted Neville to see it used on the bug, because he is evil and wanted to make Neville upset. It's also Hermione yelled for him to stop it, because she knew how upset Neville was and why.
@cayu1888EXO
@cayu1888EXO 10 ай бұрын
I am not sure that hermione knew why at this point as Neville never actually tells anyone until the next book. If she knew it may have been because of her reading about it somewhere. But in the memory that Harry witnesses that is where we find out that Barry crouch jr had participated in the torture of frank and Alice longbottom Neville’s parents. So it’s very telling how twisted Barty jr is that he would want to also torture their child by showing him how his parents were tortured and he enjoyed doing this.

It's so interesting to hear your reactions to these movies, especially not being familiar with the books. I saw the first movie before I read the books, but was a book reader first for the rest of them. So while I know what was left out, my prior knowledge helps me fill in the missing gaps of omitted information. I think of all the adaptations, Goblet of Fire may suffer the most from this. If you compare the lengths of the first three books to the fourth one, GoF is the first book that looks like it could double as a blunt force weapon - that is to say, there was a LOT more information and plot packed into GoF than the others and your questions at the end clearly show where the movie, trying to include certain scenes and dialogue from the first half of the story failed to follow up on it and let those scenes pay off at the end. For example, the mention of the Foe Glass earlier on does come back at the end, when "Moody" takes Harry back to his office and starts asking him about Voldemort's return. The Glass is behind "Moody" and in Harry's view, so as his suspicions start to grow and tension builds, he can slowly make out the shapes in the mirror, until he recognizes Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Snape's faces a moment before they burst through. Harder to do on film, when audiences might be quicker than the protagonist is allowed to be, yet I hadn't noticed that the pay off wasn't there until you mentioned it. Some other things they botched: the Quidditch World Cup. I think five extra minutes could have been spared to show some of the game play, there was all the hype of the game starting only to cut it out completely. There was actually an entire subplot in the book involving the Weasley twins and a character named Ludo Bagman, who was in charge of game events in the Ministry. The twins made a bet with Bagman that Ireland - the team they supported - would win, but Victor Krum would catch the Snitch. The twins won the bet but Bagman failed to pay up. Throughout the book, they try to get their winnings, as they had bet their entire savings on it, but to no avail. In the last scene of the book, Harry gifts the twins his Triwizard winnings. He tried to give it to Cedric's father, who wouldn't accept it, and Harry didn't feel right keeping that money himself, considering "Moody" had basically manipulated the whole tournament so he would "win", resulting in Cedric's death and Voldemort's return. Harry encouraged the twins to use the money toward their hobby of crafting practical joke items, saying that in these days ahead, laughter and smiles will be even more important than ever. It's a subplot that was understandably cut, it would have added way more time to the movie than would be reasonable, but I do lament the loss of that final scene, as I feel like it shifts the tone of the story. Yes, times are getting darker, but Harry knows better than anyone that now is the time to hold onto whatever hope, happiness, friendship, and love that they can, in order to help them make it through.

@@Syntell Thank you, I'm happy to contribute! It's certainly difficult to include every detail into a 2+ hour film, and I think especially within the Harry Potter franchise, where the films switched directors across the eight film series. I believe the last 3 or 4 were under the same director, as were the first 2, and I feel across those films, there is a bit more of a cohesive vision for the direction of the overarching story. Each one prioritized and emphasized different aspects of the story and characters. But I think that's the fun of books turned into film, getting to experience a story I already know and enjoy in a different way. I hope you enjoy the next ones coming up! Without spoilers, I can say that the 5th film may be my favorite of the films. There were aspects of the book I wasn't crazy about, but the film adaptation actually made those aspects more relatable and interesting for me, so I actually prefer the 5th film over the book in this instance. Looking forward to your reactions to it! 😁

I know it's a lot of information that may not pay off in the movie specifically, but this isn't just one movie one-offs. the books were written as a series. there's things we learn in Chamber of Secrets that come up again in Half Blood Prince for example. that is the mastery of the series and the movies fail in areas to communicate that. I'm also weirded out that because Voldemort isn't what you expect (scales? lol) but trust when the books, from day one on the back of Quirrel's he had red cat eyes and slits for nostrils. as for the Foe glass, the twist there was in the office with Barty Crouch his enemies were Dumbledore, and while they approached Harry could see the whites in their eyes.

The 3rd unforgivable curse is Imperio, which allows to take control of someone. In the class scene, Moody demonstrates this by asking the students if he should make the spider drown herself or jump out the window. Also, the that device you guys think allows Dumbledore to read minds is actually called a Pensive, which allows you to store memories. So that what Dumbledore is pulling from his mind, memories of current events so he doesn't forget them and can revisit them. As for the dragon scene, in the book, the other contestants are able to subdue the dragon in different ways because they're older and more advanced. For instance, in the book, Cedric uses the conjunctivitis curse which blinds his dragon. Goblet of Fire is the worst of the series imo. They left so much out of the book and changed things that didn't need to be changed. They showed no progress between the challenges such as Hermoine literally giving Harry classes on different spells he could use for the tournament, a missed opportunity imo. They also left out Rita Skeeter, the reporter, plot and how Hermoine figured out she was a registered or unregistered animagus, turning into a ladybug which she used to get more info on things. But yea I'm not surprised you guys didn't really like this 1 but they get better, esp the last 3.

So the book doesn’t really show how skilled she is, she’s still basically the weak link of the 4 champions. This isn’t down to her skill though, a lot of it was bad luck. All three curses were used in the ending of movie. Krum when he was attacking people in the maze was under Moody’s/Barty Jr.’s Imperious Curse which allows you complete control of the person you cast the spell on. Voldemort did the torture curse on Harry when Harry was in the ground in the graveyard. And the killing curse was used on Cedric. Igor and Snape both use to be death eaters.

I don't care how many times I see this movie. The ritual to restore Voldemort, and seeing him rise out of the cauldron will always simultaneously send shivers racing up AND down my spine and make me nauseous. Trivia: They got the movie appearance of Voldemort almost identical to the book. There is one missing detail: in the book, Voldemort is described as having blood-red eyes with a slit-like pupil. It is understandable why they didn't use those kind of contacts of Ralph Fiennes in the movie adaptations since it would eliminate the realness of Voldemort's threatening presence. The arachnid the imposter Mad-Eye Moody was demonstrating The 3 Unforgivable Curses on was a whip scorpion. As someone who was sorted into Hufflepuff on The Wizarding World website, Cedric Diggory's death hit hard. Especially seeing Amos run onto the quidditch pitch and hearing him shout "That's my son!! That's my boy!!" Backstory: Neville was traumatized by the Cruciatus Curse's usage because his parents were tortured into insanity with it.

Only thing that kinda sucked about Cedric’s death (in the book and movie) is that he was a very underdeveloped character. Would’ve been cool to see Harry and Cedric somewhat form a friendship to make the overall impact hit harder. I never really cared about Cedric so wasn’t fussed when he died, but was sad to see his dads reaction

With the curses, they didn't use the 1st two much in this movie (mind control and torture). But they used the 3rd, Avada Kadavra (death curse ☠️) alot. Harry's dreams throughout the movie. Cedric was taken out by it in the graveyard. And Voldemort used it in his battle against Harry. Basically, if you see a bad guy use a spell and it's green, it's the death ☠️ spell

The unforgivable curses play a larger role in the book. Moody sort of begins grooming Harry right off the bat, teaching him how to break the imperious curse. The Death Eaters in Azkaban hold a huge grudge against the ones who didn’t go to jail. Many of them claimed to be under the imperious curse and didn’t go to Azkaban. Crouch Jr escaped Azkaban and thinks people like Malfoy are scum for lying to get out of jail. Sort of understandable 😂

This is the movie where the story stops. Turns to look you in the eye. And says "I hope you like dark and sad. Thats where I live and baby......you're coming home with me." In the book. The tabloid lady Rita Skeeta had a VERY satisfying setback that didnt make the movie. Harrys dad, Wormtail, and Sirius were unregistered animagus so they could control Lupin while he was a werewolf. Hermione finds out that Rita Skeeta is also an unregistered animagus. She could transform into a green beetle to spy and get stories. Hermione catches her in a jar and threatens to turn her in if she doesnt eff off and leave Hogwarts alone. Then keeps her in the jar all summer before letting her go.

Barry Crouch Jr. killed his own dad because he saw him like his lip (Jr's telltale trait) as Moody after the Black Lake challenge. He didn't want to risk him checking Azkaban to check to see that he'd escaped, which ironically no one noticed yet when Sirius was the first to do it a year ago it was in every newspaper and on posters on every spare wall.

This is the only movie where Hufflepuffs have a House representative (Cedric) Hufflepuff was the most inclusive among the four houses, Helga Hufflepuff wants inclusivity in her House. Hufflepuffs valued hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play which Cedric did portray well in this movie 💛 When Harry tipped him about the dragon he asked if Fleur and Krum knew about it too (fair play) and he also tipped Harry about the task in the black lake with the egg. And in Book 3 (Prisoner of Azkaban) He's playing in the Hufflepuff quidditch team against Gryffindor, he asked for a rematch when Harry fell off his broom because of the Dementors (fair-play) andddd When they both reached the portkey in the maze he asked Harry to just take the cup because Harry saved him from the maze at the end of the movie💛 We also have Nymphadora Tonks which is a Metamorphmagus......After giving birth to his son Teddy with Remus Lupin....she fought in the battle of Hogwarts after giving birth just shows how she puts others first before herself 💛 AND DONT GET ME STARTED WITH NEWT SCAMAMDER... A MAGIZOOLOGIST, FEATURED IN THE CHOCOLATE FROG CARDS, RECEIVED ORDER OF MERLIN, WROTE FANTASTIC BEAST AND WHERE TO FIND THEM 🤩 FOUGHT GRINDELWALD TOO 😭 Hufflepuffs likes to put other peoples needs first before them💛 idk why some people are hating our House and making fun of us being sorted in Hufflepuff Imao I LOVE MY HOUSE 🦡 HUFFLEPUFF FOR LIFEEEEE~

They screwed up with the Beauxbatons girls ... because Fleur was supposed to be STANDING OUT OF THE GROUP, because she is part "magical charming creature" in her ancestry ... and by giving them a "collectivist uniform outfit" AND by casting "an average looking girl" ... they didnt really made that clear. The same for Krum in his group, although for him it isnt ancestry ... but rather something internal you cant see (ambition and skills).

Obligatory comparison to book. HARRY DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE? Dumbledore asked calmly.😂 If y'all read or listen to the books Rita Skeeter, the tabloidesque reporter, stirred up a lot more trouble with her articles in the books. Wow. Didn't get much of this one past the censor dementors did you? The whole Yule Ball is missing. At least you got most of the graveyard scene in there. Ron's inferiority complex really reared it's ugly head in this one. It was funny though seeing Ron finally realize that one of his bff's is actually a girl...and one that other boys are attracted to. Crouch Jr killed his father. Karkaroff and Snape were both Death Eaters during the first Wizarding War. The mark/tattoo symbolizes being a Death Eater. This movie contains only about 1/2 of the book in that 2+ hours. Once you get into these adaptations of the last 4 books there is a *lot* left out due to the length of the books.

@@vrroomm yeah but it was established in previous books that Ron felt inferior sometimes because all of his 5 older brothers were smart, accomplished and/or popular. Then his family not being well off and looked down on because of Mr. Weasley's fascination with muggles added on top of that even *before* you add Harry and Hermione into the mix. Ron is just such an affable person that he usually doesn't let it get to him. Harry becoming a Triwizard Champion was just the straw that temporarily broke the camel's back.
