Ed's 'plan for tomorrow' is the most brilliant bit of foreshadowing ever. He lays out the entire rest of the movie in such a way that you may never pick it up on first watch - from 'bloody Mary' (Now listen here... Mary!) to 'back at the Winchester for shots' (Call them shells...). Hot Fuzz and World's End each do it a little different, but Edgar Wright always has fun with foreshadowing.

Oh yeah, they have nods to the original trilogy. "Coming to get you, Barbara." Music from Dawn of the Dead during Shaun's idea pitches to Ed. David going out the same way Captain Steele goes in Day of the Dead. Edgar Wright's video journal on the set for Land of the Dead is wholesome. Two buddies and complete nerds meeting one of their idols and having cameos.

They do tell you how the outbreak happened! But it's really easily missed. During the first long take where Shaun is walking to the corner store, you hear the radio talking as he gets close to the store, and they're talking about something falling to earth from outer space, breaking apart, and the pieces landing all around their general area of England.

Fun part I found when I got the DVD of this movie. There are little drawing boards as to what happened to Diane after she opened the front door into the hoard of zombies and how Ed got to the shed in the end Apparently Diane survived after beating back the zombies with David’s leg before holing up in a tree out of reach just before the army came by to clear out the streets. Stayed there for few days in case the zombie thing was still an issue surviving off the meat of the leg. Before deeming it safe Ed got couple of shots off the zombies when they broke through the cellar and used them as camouflage when the rest of the zombies came in and the army shot them down as well. Ed tried to call out but passed out and died before becoming a zombie . Shawn found him and lured him back to his place afterwards

I've used Shaun in my basic screenwriting class. David is a really well-written antagonist. You'll notice that he changes his strategies. He tries to sandbag Shaun until it's apparent that Liz is going along with him. Then he complains and undermines Shaun's leadership until Liz rebukes him. Then he tries to take over as more proactive. David 6 really develop as a character, exactly, but the nature of his antagonism changes subtly in a way that escalates the conflict but is also a logical trajectory for his character.

In terms of explaining the outbreak, there's a few that are thrown in throughout the film - a radio at the start mentions a radiation-spewing asteroid passing the atmosphere (reference to Night of the Living Dead), there's a newspaper headline about GM crops causing health issues, and the news report at the end states it could be down to infected monkeys (your subtitles say Rage-infected? Fun Fact: This Movie actually has a lot of Easter Eggs referring to the Classic Zombie Movies made by Gerorge A. Romero. Like for Example, the Character Barbara, Shaun's Mom, is actually a whole Easter Egg referring to Barbara from "George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead" and the whole Plot revolving around Shaun's Group going to the Winchester trying to survive there is basically just a very dumped down Re-Iteration of the Plot of "George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead". Also, remember the little Boy at Shaun's House, that shot the Ball at Shaun even as a Zombie? Yeah, that's actually referring to a Plot Point in "Day of the Dead", were the Aspect of Zombies' Intelligence & Memories are explored a little more. In general, many Zombies in "Shaun of the Dead" were setup with that Reference in Mind. I could go on with This for Hours. But I think, You'll get the Point. "Shaun of the Dead" is definitely a Masterpiece in many Ways. Cinematography, Story, Comedy/Satire, References, Easter Eggs...it just delivers on Everything and so much more. I would even go as far to say, that it probably is the best Zombie Movie in general, but I also think, that could be kinda debatable here. ;-D

The film is a master piece. It was a nod to the classic zombie film with Mr Peggs twist. Got Simon and his writer asked to do a cameo in Land Of The Dead. George A. Romero saw the film loved it and the rest is history.

There were three short animations that came with the DVD version called Plot Holes, they go over what Shaun got up to when he lead the zombies away from the pub, how Dianne survives leaving the Winchester with a leg, and how Ed got to the shed from the pub cellar, they're here on youtube

One of my all time favourite comedies and my maybe favourite British film after Hot Fuzz. I was about 13 when this was released and snuck into the cinema to see it with my friend. Still cracks me up to this day. I love the foreshadowing at the beginning and the references to classic zombie movies.

You should really watch the two short seasons of Spaced, the comedy series Edgar Wright did with Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. It was the first extended work Edgar Wright did for TV, and you can see his innovation with editing and cinematography was already there in 1999-2000. Before that he did a couple of amateur movies that he began working on when he was in High School, of which the full length feature "A Fist Full Of Fingers" is pretty good.

One of my favourite details is that all the people featured in the opening credit sequence return as zombies later on. Most notably the cashier woman is the female zombie that appears in their backyard. It's confirmed by her nametag. Super cool detail.

The other group of people they bumped into were the real heroes. They were the ones the movies normally follow, that make good decisions. The idea was this film was following an identical group of people that picked all the opposite bad decisions

Edit to add: I had just finished watching Napoleon Dynamite for the first time too and let me just say, I was also hanging out with my friend Mary Jane by myself for the first time 😂

I've seen this movie too many times to count and I can't believe I'm just catching Dianne opened the doors of The Winchester at the end because when it comes to David, she's more than willing to "pick up the pieces". I also love that the entire "timesplitters couch scene" with Shaun and Ed is a direct foreshadow of the final bar shootout ("Reload", "On it").

In the DVD there's a few extras that explain some things that happened offscreen. When Shaun led the zombies away from the pub, the dead were really all too slow to catch him at a shamble in the open street. So he stopped every so often to keep them following him, since they follow things only in direct line of sight. Then when he was ready to go back he ran into an alley and hopped into a dumpster until they all passed, then jumped back out and ran back. But one at the back spotted him and the rest of the horde followed that one in a straight line back to the pub. Diane actually survived running into the horde. She beat them all off with David's leg and then climbed a tree when she snapped out of it. She passed out when the army rolled through, stayed up there for a week eating the leg when she saw no people or zombies, and eventually climbed down and went home to her mom's. Ed wasn't torn apart like David because when the zombies busted in, he shot a couple with his final shells and they fell on top of him, hiding him from view when he passed out and turned alone with nothing motivating him to move. Until Shaun, after the hest died down, returned and found Ed still there in the basement. Whom he then led back home and into the shed using himself as bait with the same method above.

you got to do the cornetto trilogy- so many awesome british comedians and actors! then of course 'Paul' an honorary grouping to the other three and more USA style :) i think the other alternate group was a comment on how every friend group in the uk has a set of these characters in one form or another in it, and you got to remember the british pub is an institution - basically a second lounge and everyone has a 'local' lol
