Good Afternoon! Back with an educational video that I hope sheds some light on a very prevalent issue. Sorry to bring such disappointing news - if you are like me and occasionally love to have your hair braided with synthetic hair. I am truly done! Let me know what you think and please share this with someone else who wears braids! Part 2 covers any questions raised here concerning Apple cider, Human hair sourcing, safety, ethics, and any other question you may have I likely answered here! kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3PMeZeHo9-KrtEsi=rzqQvFfqRGKLkJo8 😅 I added links to the description box 🗃️ if you are looking for safer alternatives for hair braiding or extensions and I will update the list as I learn more. Feel free to leave suggestions or links to Safe, Ethical, and Fair-sourced extensions. 📣Addendum: 👂 I have already answered this question so many times in the comments section “Why is your hair braided with synthetic hair if you know it is bad for you?” Answer: in the video, I am wearing an old twist-out style which I installed myself BEFORE I knew the information I was sharing with you. I filmed this video after doing research and while wearing an old hairstyle. For full transparency, I kept it in to show you I have also liked and worn synthetic hair like many Black women. In the video, I actually showed you the hair I used for this particular style. Now that I know better that style and hair is no longer in my hair. In other words, after filming this video I took out the hair and will no longer wear it or any other synthetic hair. Hope that makes sense to the many that have asked! One thing about me I am very transparent and my goal is always to be truthful.

@Kenton-Habiba Wow...how timely is this? I took out my locks a few weeks ago. For sure I had no intentions of using human hair sacrificed to idols (plus stolen and even from corpses) or putting any chemicals but I thought synthetics and synthetic wigs were safe. I have been just natural these few weeks but thank goodness I waited. The wool/crochet hair yes...was my 1st thought. I have seen beautiful styles with it. Thank you so very much for sharing this.

There are issues with human hair also. In some countries, women cut their hair to get rid of bad spirits or the hard session they have been through. Leaving the pain behind. Called New beginnings or New birth. I'm just saying that the best braids are your own natural beautiful hair.

Why? No one is forcing women to buy cheap synthetic crap to weave into their hair in order to lie about their natural hair length or for whatever sorry reason women use to explain wearing doll hair on their adult heads. Plus considering the fake nails and plastic eyelashes a lot of women adorn themselves with one would say that most of you are already screwed. So why the fear over another toxic item that could kill you but hasn't yet.

I had long stopped relaxing my hair (much to my family’s chagrin) and after growing my hair out started my loc journey 6 years ago. My locs are thick and flowing and I feel proud that I chose what was healthiest for MY body, whether other people realized what I was doing or not. This is so true, synthetic braiding hair is dangerous. I have never been big on braid with added hair. Last summer I decided to get braids. Half way through getting my hair braided I started breaking out everywhere starting on my face. I was really itchy but I still got my hair finished. I was getting worse so I tried to wash the hair and that didn’t work. Over the next few days I was in agony and my face and ears were so swollen and I was uncontrollably scratching to the point where some spots were bleeding. I took Benadryl and even had to go to the ER for steroid shots. They asked what I had done differently and the only thing was the hair, they told me to take it out immediately because I was having an allergic reaction to it and it’s ingredients. I took it out and within a couple of days the swelling went down and the itching stopped. I never wore synthetic hair again.

You did such an amazing job bringing this information to light. I gave up the relaxers in my early twenties. Now in my fifties. Most people don't put all the dots together and would never equate our hair and beauty regiments with warfare. There has been a war on the black woman's womb forever. Population control is real. There is no end to the nefarious ways that the enemy has tried to do this. Whether it is synthetic hair, perm, or glue for the wigs and eyelashes it is time for us to understand who is making products that target us and why. Just do a little critical thinking and you can see it clearly. We just have to take our emotions out of the equation long enough to stop being defensive about it and see it. Black women, it's time for us to love ourselves enough to put all of those poisons down and find creative ways to embrace our natural beauty. We are beautiful.❤

Synthetic hair is OK, the issue is the chemical used. THE FIX: soak hair in warm water (not hot) for 20 minutes in vinegar. You'll see the chemicals rise to the top-it's a white film. Throw off that water and keep rinsing in lukewarm water until the water is clear. Let the hair air dry. This process gets rid of harmful chemicals and stops itching. Edit to add: use gloves if you can, keeps the chemicals off your skin.

Unfortunately, they are everywhere. But, depending on your location, the levels of all these carcinogenic chemicals and forever chemicals aren't high enough to cause any immediate effect. The effects are mostly long term. However, there are ways to reduce our exposure to a moderate extent. However, the carcinogenic polymers, byproducts, chemical precursors, and derivatives, in hair products are unacceptable and the companies who are responsible for this are despicable.

I did a research for those of us black ladies that like swimming and aquarius, while studying art and design. In the research, before we enter the pool or the sea. Rub virgin coconut oil all over your hair and body after a warm shower. If you are allergic to coconut use virgin olive oil. Another one is applying leave in conditioner and wearing a regulated water tight swimming cap like the one I have by Speedo. After finishing from the pool or the sea take a shower to wash of the chlorine off your body.

As a cosmetology educator, this is a MUST watch for my students. I will be adding this video to my lesson plan immediately! As a stylist, I’m not a “braider”but sometimes have to braid for wig and weave installations. In recent years, I’ve opted to use thread to secure the braid down because so many clients are “allergic” to synthetic hair. Now we know what it really is. Also, on a personal level, I’m one of the people who is severely irritated by synthetic hair. In past times I’ve had to go thru vigorous pre-washing and soaking with apple cider vinegar before I could wear braided extensions. Thank you so much for the better options you’ve provided! I’ve also been on a quest to only style my own hair without extensions. Being part of the beauty industry for many years, I’ve always said and thought that there should be some type of Association for this industry (other than the general state regulations) to help better regulate products and practices. Just like our foods, we must be diligent in thoroughly researching, reading packages, labels and ingredients for our hair products! This video was much needed. Thanks again!🙏🏾

Organic food isn’t really organic, meats are bring cloned, shampoos and hair products we use on a regular are used with chemicals. Even the toothbrush we use are made from artificial bristles! I saw her video and went out and bought about 6 packs of synthetic hair she used. Because I loved the style so much lol. But this is horrible how they are using these chemicals to make this stuff. Ever hear of that story of a woman who bought a wig and the stench of it filled her entire home?! She cleaned her whole house trying to figure out what it is until she discovered it was the wig. Then she immediately threw it out.

Not to freak you out completely but you will find 1,2 or all of these chemicals you mentioned in pretty much anything plastic/synthetic . Acrylic yarn for instance is literally made from Acrylonitrile😩. Some of this stuff is literally in items that are used daily in hospitals. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Only way I'll use extensions is if I wash them first. It amazes me how many folks use extensions (and clothes) without washing them first. If stylists refuse to allow me to bring my shampooed extensions, then I don't use their service, I'll just do the style myself!! Some braiders require you to purchase the hair they sale as a part of the service package, which I don't like. It should be optional.

This is heartbreaking news because like many of you I love braids. I ignorantly thought braiding was better than wigs since you know the scalp can still breathe, my my my how wrong I was. I also want to encourage the black community that this is a great business opportunity for a black owned business to produce anti-toxic, non allergic hair for us to continue to wear our styles. So far ezbraids and wool can be used as alternatives;) Hope that helps…

Very informative. Thanks for sharing, Habiba. I usually have my hair braided with human hair 80% of the time. But honestly, everything will eventually end up killing us if it's health wise - usually cancer. It's in our foods (meats get injected with growth hormones), chemicals, our lotions, hair products as you stated, and mostly everything. People who tan, that's also a high risk of cancer. Everything around us is cancerous. We are ALL doomed either way. 🤷🏾‍♀️

No matter what we must fight to stay healthy and protect our bodies even if it is an uphill battle ( especially when we live in the western world where everything is processed) Otherwise we might as well eat and drink what we want, smoke and do all the other things we know are bad for us 😩 Obviously Not! As we know better we try as much as possible not to feel defeated and avoid as much as we can of the bad things. We cant avoid everything but we should continue to try.

I've been braiding my own hair since I was a teenager. This past weekend i took out my braids, and was contemplating what style to do. I just moved and have two kids, so i was pressed for time, so for the first time ever I twisted my own hair. Its not my ideal look because i love lenghth but after hearing this I'm sticking to it. I have always been on a hair journey. Hair would grow and then fall out, repeatedly, eventually thinned out overtime. I had regular bloodwork done. I'm convinced now it was the braiding hair. Thanks for sharing ❤
