I just did a show with Com Truise headlining and let him know about how this documentary first introduced me to his music. He was really knocked out that this documentary exists, and meant a lot to be held in a regard high enough to reach so far and wide. Such a nice, humble man - it was a blast getting to talk to him, and see him interact with fans like a fun, fair, easygoing guy.
@GamesExposed
@GamesExposed 6 ай бұрын
yeah this documentary is good but it's kind of out of date and also misses some bands like the midnight because I never even heard of them at the time. I hope you showed him or told him about the part where I mixed arnold quotes from pumping iron to com truise's music, the "I'm cumming day and night" quote.That being said this was part of me trying to do something positive on the channel because I usually talked about conspiracy theories so I wanted to add what matters to me and that is music and synthwave. Now the scene is kind of falling appart and people moved on to do other stuff but I'm still doing it because for me it wasn't just a trend. If you have time check out my new album station 23 on bandcamp. - vosto.bandcamp.com/album/station-23

Nailed it! Wonderful, in depth look into the rad genre that brings us so much joy. I was class of 1984 and can say you definitely did your homework! The 80s were indeed a friendlier time, fresh fun and full of promise. Might sound corny but blasting Synthwave jams [daily] is jumper cables for my spirit, a bit of the same fun and promise that keeps me going in today's often uncertain world. Bless you Vosto Vlad!

French artist DANGER was probably the first modern synthwave artist I ever heard back in 2007 (19h11 holy shit). I've always felt there were some quiet roots in the chiptunes community - some Razor1911 tracks are very reminiscent of current synthwave releases - both harkening back to 80s arcade nostalgia.

Cool documentary, I love synthwave. I was born in 1975 so remember the 80s, many of the movies like Robocop etc , me and my freinds were watching those in the early 90s as VHS rentals as were too young to get to see them at the cinema so in many ways the 80s nostalgia also seeps into early 90s :) As well as 80s, I grew up watching 70s sci fi movies so I am also nostalgic for sounds like Boards Of Canada etc. In the UK we used to tune into soviet/eastern European radio stations on the radio as if we were spies, didnt understand what was being said wanted to believe it was top secret probably mundane things like the weather and local news ha ha.

You posted this on Discord, so this is your first video i see. It is well done, especially liked the editing and the visuals. But what I wanted to say is that I really dont know how to feel about this popularity thing. At least we can say we liked it before every second youtuber had a Synthwave intro/outro...

Well done and well put together! I do feel that there is a part missing from your documentary - a comparison between Synthwave and Vaporwave. There's a strange relationship between these two genres were Vaporwave puts an ironic, "arty", spin to 80's and 90's commercialism, chopping it and slowing it down to create an eerie, lonely sense of rootlessness, like you are walking through a dying shopping mall. In contrast, Synthwave started out as an ironic take on 80's aesthetic (Vice City, Blood Dragon) and over time became more and more sincere. It's like Vaporwave points to the failure of commercial escapism while Synthwave doubles down on it, refines the aesthetic and does a better job than the original - more 80's than the 80's!

I was 10-19 in the 80s... and I can say in al the years I've lived, the 80s were the most upbeat, light-hearted, and cheesy eras I've lived through... in the 70s, the "free love" time was ending and people were living with the end of the Vietnam war, and the 80s seemed to be an era where most of the world was finding hope and peace, and music reflected that - the 70s were a kind of driven transition, with a lot of harder rebellious or sad, melancholy feelings in most music... the happy, carefree tracks were the rarity... but the 80s music gained the new technological sounds from Kraftwerk, Isao Tomita and others started in the late 70s meeting the hopeful, upbeat driving momentum of the 80s and the influx of home computers and games, the coolness of the space shuttle program, MTV and cable giving us a hundred channels to watch to entertain us, and the feeling that the future was so bright, we'd have to wear shades... and not yet to the pissed-off, overwhelmed, depression-filled angst of the 90s alternative and grunge music. It was really a magical time in a lot of ways... a confluence of hope, tech, and style that was unique to the era... and the bands and people who work to recapture that are appreciated by those that were there and miss it, like myself. :)

This was really well produced. Thorough, but also concise enough that I didn't get bored. I was particularly struck by the part about you growing up in Romania under Soviet-era conditions. Smuggling in western music and movies must have created a very different experience to those of us that took our freedoms for granted in Western Europe (and in many cases heard the songs and saw the films years before you could) but ultimately we are unified in our love of music.

This genre compiles all of the good of the 80's, and leaving out most of the cheese. I first got into this genre through watching Drive, and discovering Kavinsky. much respect ! your comment confirms that this direction in which I am going with the channel is a valid one , you may see stuff like this or you may see something conspiracy related ... I think it works good together ...also , nothing wrong with a bit of cheese ... not too much though :D

Vosto, I just want to share a personal THANK YOU on just how stellar this documentary was. You nail the hammer on the head, and further cements my love of this no-longer niche music and art style. In 2021, its becoming more popular, as game series such as Battlefield, Need for Speed, Arcade Paradise, Solar Ash, Rocket League, Five Nights at Freddy's, Fortnite, Beat Saber, Wave Break and FarCry all take inspiration from the vibes of the 80s. What a time we live in.

i love your music Vosto, seeing this documentary you made is amazing, it really shows the backbone of the music itself and how it culturally came to be. you nailed it dude, this is awesome; you are awesome. Always happy to hear you on nightride fm and see you in the chat. (Ruiner2077 on the stream) there is a song you did with Donbor, Trail of Freedom and the two of you together made some scary beautiful music, but everything you do musically i feel in my soul in a way that so much other music can not make me feel.

It was very nice to learn a different perspective of the 80s. I was a young boy in México during that time and can attest that the 80s were a great decade to live in. You made that point very well. And you also introduced me to lot of new music to listen to! You got my subscribe, man.

There is a lot going on. From a love of specific art to music styles, nostalgia and things retro. Dance With The Dead, Perturbator, Gost and also more pop style artists like Gunship and Scandroid, they all deliver. Can't believe this is lasting more than a decade now. When I became aware of this I thought it won't outlive electro swing, which was a really badly played house music thing. But this retro synthwave was more than that. 80s pop, 80s horror soundtracks, Italo Disco, all mixed up with metal, hard rock and even death metal to let the darkness collide with bright neon lights. Is there anything that did not exist?

Man, I searched Synthwave Documentary, and did not expect something of this quality. 2 years later, and still holds up. I was also pleasantly surprised that you named a few artists I hadn't heard of like tonebox.

Synthwave; i just discovered the genre almost a year ago and prefer it a billion times over Lady Bathroom ("Gaga" rhymes with spanish for sh!t), Nicky Minaj, reggaeton, and (since living near Mexico) narcoballads, which most people in my town listen to.

Thank you so much for this video. Your hard work and recommended artists and your own music are hugely appreciated and enjoyed. I discovered synthwave through Hotline Miami soundtrack and later sorta through vaporwave. But didn't know where to start to try to understand how all these juicy tasty genres and subgenres started. I'd tell friends about this music in really vague limited ways. So now I'm equiped and educated more so on this music that makes life that much more meaningful for me. Thank you!

Unfortunately the creators of Cyberpunk 2077 didn't want to use synthwave tracks in the game because they've thought synthwave genre is too melodic and beautiful for such a dark settings.
