Well the advertised number (in this case 105 mil) is the number given assuming you invest it and take the annuals to increase the amount. They don't have that amount on hand. The actual amount they have (cash option) is about half, so just choosing the lump sum automatically cuts it in about half (about 60 mil). Then come the taxes afte that to bring it down to 44.

The pay off amount of the cash option he chose of his $105 win is around $65,000,000 before taxes. Had he chosen the annuity of $150,000,000.00, after tax he would have had $69,300,000 paid off to him for the next 30 years.

Taxes in this country is criminal. I know a guy that won $10M from a scratch off. They taxed him before giving him the money and he had to pay more taxes at the end of the year because he was in a higher tax bracket. When it was all said and done, his $10M winnings went down to $3M before a spent a penny. He was still incredibly grateful. But just remember that, when that money hits your account, the IRS is notified immediately and will be closely watching you at the end of the year to tax you again as “earned income”. 😒
