Syriac Orthodox Prayer "Abun D'Bashmayo" (The Lord's Prayer)

Some of you have asked why the Lord's prayer in Syriac/Aramaic mostly starts with "Hallowed be Thy name"/"Nethqadash Shmokh". During the Divine Liturgy the Lord's prayer is preceded by a prayer that the celebrant (Bishop or Priest) prays. The celebrant (or if someone with higher rank than the celebrant is present) is the one saying "Our Father who art in heaven"/"Abun d-ba-Shmayo" and the deacons, choir and attendants joins in from "Hallowed be Thy name". I have posted the prayer that precedes the Lord's Prayer during Liturgy here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJOppJeancieqdUsi=JemhmB_7NYpV6kmV That's the reason why many renderings starts with "Hallowed be Thy name". The faithful should, of course, start with "Our Father" when praying the Lord's Prayer without clergy present.

Hi, I am from Brazil, and trying to learn some aramaic, what is not that easy for us. :) In this prayer I noticed that 3 words are mentioned, but I didnt find it on the Peshitta (Matay 5:9-15) . One of them is easy to understand, the Amin. Obviuosly a closing after the prayer itself. The other 2 words are "l'wahtohayn" (verse 12, just after ܚܘܒܝܢ), and this "lan", just after ܦܨܢ in verse 13. Is is a tradition/liturgy issue as well, or I am looking to a different version? Thank you!

I have always loved to read, hear and sing The Lord's Prayer in English, and I always begin my prayers with it. I just recently discovered how spiritually powerful it is in Aramaic, the mother language of Jesus Christ. Since Jesus told us this is how we are to pray God's Prayer, Imo, it must be powerful in any language, but none more beautiful than Aramaic. I don't know what they are saying, but I know every time I hear it, it washes my soul with tears....every time. :)
