ALL RIGHT PART 3! Feedback detection is not something I would expect from a unit like this. I am going to study very carefully the Bode document you linked last time. Example 7 with speech sounds like endless fun. You may have heard me laughing my head off during this segment. The reasons for getting this are mounting OZ! thank you so much for all the hard work on this! Cheers

Tony. Thanks. It was a lot of work (c. 10x a normal single video), but perhaps this series will be helpful for other for another year or two.

Brilliant video series on the Bode 1630 Frequency Shifter. It looks like it is a very useful module for synthesis. Your #7 application, Speech Processing, is the first time I've been able to understand some of the reasons I hear the occasional distorted voices on the High Frequency Amateur Radio bands.

It's what I call the "X-wing fighter effect" 🙂

You know, the great thing with these video's is that you're constantly taken back to the classic Synth records made by Jarre, Vangelis etc, and discover how they build their sounds and patches... great stuff!! :)

Yes! It’s very interesting to see the capabilities and limitations of these systems. Thx

There's another example I've read about that also uses delay feedback. I think it's putting the frequency shifter in the delay feedback, but with a small amount of feedback. Apparently Kraftwerk Numbers used a similar effect on the drums.

Interesting. The drum effect is a premonition of the Phil Collins gated drum sound from the 80's. Where did you read about that? Have you ever reproduced the sound? I'd be very interested in the details. thx

@@ozhalljrOh I wish! No, I've never heard anyone reproduce the Keaftwerk Numbers drum effect properly. There are a few articles and forums out there, but here is one: (in quotes) "However, a frequency shifter is only "half the battle" if you want to get close to the sound of the rhythm track of "numbers". The other half is a delay with the frequency shifter in the feedback path. The delay time is set very short so that the result is not perceived as an "echo" but as an "extension" of the input signal. If the feedback is high enough, this "extension" "buzzes" "up" or "down" depending on whether the upshift or downshift signal of the frequency shifter is used in the feedback path. Oskar Sala made this effect principle a permanent part of his music, but with such long delay times that the result was perceived as an echo, with each repetition sounding "weirder" or "more metallic" than the previous one. Frank Zappa also used a similar effect, but in his case a pitch shifter was in the feedback path of the delay instead of a frequency shifter." source: www.sequencer.de/synthesizer/threads/drums-in-kraftwerks-numbers.25939/page-2

I always wanted the Bode one but got the Doepfers MK 1. I never used with voices, nice to hear yours, so I know why how the Lucas THX film voices were made.

so If i put voices into my. doepfer frequency shifter I can get that? @@ozhalljr
@ozhalljr10 ай бұрын
yes. I have never owned a doepfer FS, but the controls look identical. I believe the function the same.

your videos have great contents but have a bad structure that made them tedious... you should start each part with sound/music and then explain what you did
@ozhalljr10 ай бұрын
I fully agree! I've been thinking that very thing (sound first). It would be especially helpful for these longer format videos. This would be possible for future videos. What do you think about adding chapter marks so that you could skip the explanation and go to the sound? At least I could do that after the video has been published (i.e. for existing videos).
