Guitarist Daron Malakian: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'"

This song has a very deep hidden meaning. The song is about drug addiction. "I cry when angels deserve to die" is just a play on words meaning "I cry when good people die from bad choices" SOAD songs almost always have a specific meaning to them. The original name of this song was called suicide but the record label made them change it to be more "radio friendly" I suggest reacting to BYOB(bring your own bombs) its a great song with a wonderful message

In terms of the Christian ethos, self-harm and suicide is a sin because we shouldn’t desecrate the bodies God gave us. Much of society has absorbed this and thus its response to diseases like addiction can be very harsh and unsympathetic. The speaker turns it around and emphasizes the choices that someone makes are not always tied to their value as a person. From that perspective, the one who knowingly harms themselves (accepts their sin) can be viewed as more righteous than the person who high-handedly judges others without practicing compassion. The singer takes on an almost Christ-like stance of mercy towards those that the most “pious” people of society choose to look down on.

As one of members of this group said : "This song called "Chop Suey", because that's what we are as a band, as musicians"(vegetables, pasta, sauce, etc.(we are different and unique)). And what about meaning of the song - the song is about how differently we are treated depending on how we leave life. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I was going to die of an overdose, they might say I deserved it because I was abusing dangerous drugs. Hence the line "I cry when angels deserve to die". Excerpts Of " Father! Into Your hands I give my spirit" and "Why have You forsaken me?» they are references to the death of Jesus on the cross, since, according to the Gospels, this was one of the seven sayings of Jesus before his death.

The song directly quotes Jesus on the cross: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Followed by another quote from Christ on the cross:”Why have you forsaken me?” That plays into the words “Self-righteous suicide”. Christ, according scripture, could have refused the cross, but he accepted it willingly. “Angels deserve to die” describes that Christ was sinless (purity of an angel), but willingly took the sin of the world upon him. At that moment, when G-d saw his son, covered in sin, he turned his back and allowed Christ to die and be the sin sacrifice. That same moment, Christ felt the absence of his father and proclaimed “why have you forsaken me”? This song, at least the chorus, is the Gospel....wether it was intentional or not.

Song is more about suicide, that was even the original title but you make a very good point there, I thought it was a religious song when I first heard this
@johnathanmartin1504
@johnathanmartin1504 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with The Red Ranter, that's what I think this song is about. It makes sense with the lyrics. The lyrics themselves refer to Jesus' "self righteous suicide" as in dying on the cross. When the ones who arguably are to blame (the demons/fallen angels) deserve to die. Hence "when angels deserve to die". Then god forsakes him, the ultimate betrayal. It shows the hypocrisy inherent in a lot of religious stories ("there you go creating another fable"). This song is one of many things that made me eventually become agnostic. The writer of this song was clearly once religious and got disillusioned with the whole thing. It's why other than being a great song, this song also really speaks to me.

@@youngjiggymf1704 No, it wasn’t. Darion explained it’s about people judging others after their death and pointing at them like they deserved to die from whatever they went through. Hence the line “when angels deserve to die”.
@thesunofgod7896
@thesunofgod7896 3 жыл бұрын
@@honeyandlavender_ it relates to both... Comparing each lines about Angels, God, father, forsaken me? All intertwine quoting the Bible and relating it to personal experience which will coincide to the beliefs regarding “God” and committing suicide. As people who commit suicide are considered to have committed a great sin where they will go to hell. So a person who dies from suicide or drugs who are angels are mistakenly judged because of what scriptures tell them to believe and instead of what that person really believes or feels emotionally about their situation... Hence questioning why god was forsaking him and crying when angels deserve to die... “self righteous suicide” as Jesus died on the cross for our sins voluntarily and said those very same lines on the cross directed towards god for allowing it or “forsaking” him... SOAD has really deep meanings to their songs that has to be deciphered a lot by intuition... They are also political activists so there’s a deeper meaning when they talk about world issues... Everything they said lyrically relate to however you perceive it...

that ' father into your hands' was actually super random. they went to Rick Rubin for help with the song and he told them to pick a book from his bookcase and to randomly flick to page. and that was where that line came from, which they ofcourse felt fitting enough to incorporate it into the song

This song is about death from addiction, whether it be spiritual death, emotional death, or physical death. My brother died from alcohol addiction a month ago. the lyrics "father into your hands i commend my spirit" "why have you forsaken me?" Were also Jesus Christ's dying words upon the cross. Jesus also went knowingly to his death.. A form of self sacrifice..or... Suicide. I know that SOAD lost a dear friend to Suicide who seemed ok on the outside but all the sudden ended his own life hence the lyric "wake up...grab a brush to put on a little make up..hide the scars to fade away the shake up." Great analysis guys i think you were spot on with the angels deserving to die aspect.

the song is about Armenian genocide. Yess it's referring to Jesus, showing how Armenians turned to him to be saved during the genocide. Self-righteous suicide has irony in it, meaning that Turkey still denies Armenian genocide, so that line is referring to them as if asking, then what was it? a suicide?

Just found u guys yesterday,,, am loving it!! Just like you guys posting ur reactions and analyzing different music ,, i grew up listening to EVERYTHING,,, Die hard Eazy, Bone , E-40, MC8 and Spice1 fan,,, yet more of the actual music I owned was Hair Band and Heavy Metal. Loved my mainsteam and Mom always had country on. I love to see how you guys appreciate that it's all music, and that you'd be surprised if you give other genres a chance, u might find ur new favorite artist for this year?! I have not looked to see all of who u have viewed so far,,, but totally love what ur doin. Couple more common ones i was wondering if you had done was groups like White or Rob Zombie, Korn, and Limp Bizkit for example. Or Metallica, Megadeth, and Black Sabbath's WARPIGS is a staple of Hard Rock fans with Ozzy Osborne at vocals. I am sure you might find something like RAMMMSTEIN who are world famous German metal that was popular here for couple years with songs like DU HAST and SEHNSUCHT. P.O.D. is a very popular Christian metal band that had some big hits off both The Fundamental Elements of Southtown and Satellite with both title tracks charting, they are in that era of the real mixing of rock and rap that happened turn of the century time (1999-2002) which were bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit and the same time that Eminem was emerging. Am thinking POD Southtown, or Korn's Blind, A.D.I.D.A.S. , and ice-breaker Freak on a Leash which was intend to listen to while tripping. Limp Bizkit's Three Dollar Bill album introduced them to the world with Faith and Counterfeit, and Break Stuff,, before they changed gradually to more mainstream songs like Nookie, Re-Arranged, My Way, My Generation, and of course Rollin were all 99 and earlier. If you really wanna go out there,,, grab Kittie's all female heavy metal album Spit and check out title track. Thanks for doin what you guys do, I personally enjoy watching and remembering old songs I used to Jam to,,,,,,Want something sick,, You could check out what is listed EVERYWHERE by anyone as the most difficult guitar song, Eruption by Eddie Van Halen!!

I definitely see the connection between rap and rock. What a lot of people don't realize about rock music is how deep a lot of the messages are in the songs. This is especially true with metal. I would really like to see you guys break down the following songs: 1.) Morph 2.) Neon Gravestones 3.) Kitchen Sink All are by the group twenty one pilots. I really just want to see ya'll's take on what the bars mean.

"Angels deserve to die", because even with good intentions only the person itself knows what is truly better for him/her.... it is your life, you're yourself, the ultimate freedom you have is to choose how, when and where to die (or not if you've choose yourself to not decide upon it) but no other person or religion should ever be allowed to decide how you should live your life unless you're ok with it.

Hi! New subscriber 😊 Most people miss that the part “Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit. Father, into your hands, why have you forsaken me? Etc..is what Jesus said as he was dying on the cross. I’m not religious but that shit was pounded into my head in Catholic school.

I think Chop Suey was his singing style at the onset. Insane jam! Incredible performance. 100% from the vocalist, piano at the end, so many professional miscal elements in this song. When have we not cried out to the heavens as people?

Here are some: Skillet-monster Badflower-heroin Jinjer-piscea 3 days grace-infrared Disturbed-sound of silence Greenday-american idiot Smashmouth-allstar Hollywoood undead- bullet Paramore-misery buainess. I am a metal guitarist and sometimes it includes rap, sometimes it is more like Deathcore with a lot of screaming, then neoclassical, and tons more. I mean, it is rare lyrics don't rhyme but not always in a pop/rap style. Though I like to play old glam rock like Guns N' Roses. Though I like Rage Against The Machine, SOAD, and Falling In Reverse are my main, but I also get in to Metallica, Black Veil Brides (closest to that old school metal vibe), AC/DC. A really cool old school collab was "Bring The Noise" with Anthrax and Public Enemy. That song helped to see onstage production value for rap.

I enjoyed watching this video especially as I was in a bubble for years listening to not much outside of rap music. But in away it's good because all of these old rock tunes are new to me and I'm really enjoying discovering these tunes.

Scriptwork reacting to rock music is about the best thing to happen this year. Do "Time Bomb" by Rancid next. Make sure you have the lyrics pulled up though. 😂
