System Shock 2 came out years before dynamic lighting was a thing. A lot of your complaints in the lighting department simply were not possible at that time. Doom 3 introduced dynamic shadows 5 years later and required a monster of a PC to actually run.

Thief seemed to handle darkness pretty well. And I used the same engine!
@Innadiated2 ай бұрын
@@Treblaine If you mean Thief 1 it didnt even have colored lighting until Dark Engine 2. Forget dynamic shadows. Most of those games from the era accomplished darkness with clever texture work as shadows and lighting were very limited.

Thanks for the video! You managed to keep it interesting throughout, even though I sometimes felt like an old fart that didn't get some references. I think many of the minor criticisms boil down to: "The game had to fit on a CD-ROM" (640MB).

I was the first person in the world to review System Shock 2, for PC Zone magazine. As it was the cover game, the editor asked me for a line of text describing it. I thought for about ten seconds and gave him: "A masterpiece unveiled." It was a masterpiece. It wasn't perfect, but it was great in all the right ways. In particular the atmosphere, and the feeling that you were rarely - if ever - safe. One thing that always bothered me, though - and I don't remember if I brought it up in my review or not - is that the psionic monkeys had ape sound effects (they sound like slightly sped-up chimps, but look like monkeys), and apes and monkeys are different (and that matters). I can't remember, but do the monkeys in System Shock 2 have tails? If they do, then they're monkeys. If they don't, then they're apes. But the ape sound effects I found to be highly unnerving. You could hear one of these deadly simians well before you saw them, and that was scary. PS. Deus Ex is pronounced "Day-uSS Ecks", not "deuce ex".

It's a piece from the OG Fallout soundtrack. The exact one you timestamped is called "Vats of Goo". Good stuff. The composer made it publicly available, so you can download it for free - google "Mark Morgan Vault Archives" and voila. Or just stream it I guess.

I played SS2 in 1999 and it was a shock. Scary af. Deep, engaging, profound. Bioshock games are watered down compared to the original series. I got bored with Bioshocks pretty quick. Meantime, in SS2, I was shitting my pants every few minutes, also pondering how I could handle a different path on future runs.

bioshock infinite combat sucks because its a numbers game, early enemies die with 2-3 hits and in the later areas you headshot them 10 times and numbers pop out of their heads, system shock 2 weapon animations might be extremely primitive but that was never the focus of the game, they werent trying to make a shooter...oh and of course enemies are not giant bulletsponges and if they get to that point, you can always use the right ammo, meanwhile in infinite, bulletsponge galore.

System shock 2 enemy design, i feel is still unmatched to this day, of all the games that have come since, featuring the "once human corrupted crew" they all feel bland and samey by comparison, i'm looking at you Dead Space and Prey, great games, but boring (visual) enemy design also SS2 coop, i played a few times with a friend, he'd frequently be turned into a crate during level transition, i crate i could loot :D also also the lack of SS3 is truly a crying shame, tho after the state of the pseudo ultima sequel, maybe it's for the best

cyber modules are not money neither are nanites, its like star trek, there is no inflation better replication technology is used in med sci for experiments, cheaper in engineering and in recreations people keep making expensive stuff so the cost is higher especially since they were frozen for a long time to ravel far away in space, its not like they can order more resources from amazon. Then you got the hacked reality theme that shodan is doing so there is that. Cyber module price to upgrade has to go up since each one is more complex wiring in your cybernetics.
