My age is showing here, but I can't help but find the Y2K panic absolutely hilarious, almost campy in just how ridiculous it was. Sitting down and really trying to think that people were actually terrified, literal computer scientists and engineers were concerned, and suicide was at least considered by some people is really hard, because I wasn't there for it. @@baashasucks The thing is, by 1999 no one feared the millenium bug for real. It was more a meme than an actual threat at that time. Nearly all critical infrastructure and personal PCs were already updated to use 4 digit year format almost a decade earlier. But indeed a lot of companies used the panic to sell new stuff. I remember my PC had a big yellow sticker on the side that said it was "Y2K ready".

Playing this game for the first time now, and this scene hit like a truck, well fucking done! I only wish i played this game before Bioshock and Deadspace, because I saw most of the plot coming. That being said, I absolutely love this game from the mechanics to the writing. This should be required homework for any game dev. A masterpiece that still holds up today.

I played this game when I was 14 back in the day. That scene is a core memory that left a scar on my mind. I remember I entered the room and was totally stunned by the fact that she was dead. I was so invested in the story, that for a moment I genuinely felt sad, abandoned and at a loss what to do next. And then I almost crapped my pants when Shodan started to speak. That voice. I was in full panic mode and was totaly not expecting that to happen. When it ended I needed a moment to process what the hell just happened.

The most interesting thing about SHODAN is not just her ability to manipulate, but to completely control all that is around her, an Ai so powerful she thought of enough portions of her data to resurrect herself from death. This scene where the walls and ceiling fallout through this supposedly super advanced space ship, is truly daunting, she chose to purposely expose herself in the most bold and terrifying method to prove her capabilities to player. Though after thinking after all this time from this scene, was it a mind trick/hack illusion due to the player's cyber-implants, or was it just a modular set of the room being taken apart? It makes SHODAN even more mysterious.

Actually, maybe not. Video game movie adaptations have had a very bad reputation of either lacking so much of the spirit of the source material, or hardly attempting to tell a cohesive story. The worst examples being anything done by Uwe Boll, which even Hideo Kojimi states he's the last person he trusts to produce a Metal Gear Soild movie!

@@Cyberbrickmaster1986 I'm guessing that part of the problem is that most any director daring and crazy enough to risk their time on a game (or anime) adaptation is usually NOT the kind of person who can; A. rein in their creative impulses enough to be faithful to the original; B. commit to dedicated research on what they are adapting; and/or C. craft cohesive and cinematic stories the way the movie greats can. I imagine similar incompatibilities are part of what leads to game adaptations of movies being hit-and-miss. It's made even worse by the fact that these negative influences are multiplied by the other negative factors affecting the chances of ANY remake/reboot/sequel being truly high-quality. Lightning rarely strikes in the same place for the same person. And if it does, it's because they are practically Zeus, and they probably have other things they'd rather be doing. Sue me, I like to dramatically over-stretch metaphors. :)

The reason she sounds like that normally is because SHODAN herself is nothing but a sentient glitch, a living fuck-up that thinks so highly of itself that it doesn’t even realize it’s broken. I think she may have just been using playbacks of Polito’s voice to construct sentences and build responses in such a way that it seemed she really _was_ Polito.

Let me answer this from one autistic's perspective… Emulating "normal" speech, even a specific person's patterns, is quite doable, but at the same time, quite effortful. This is half of why making small talk is difficult. Carrying on a "human" conversation about a complex topic is barely harder than carrying on a "human" conversation about nothing in particular. But when allowed to cut loose and speak naturally, in a way others find unsettlingly unnatural… it's surprisingly easy. Comfortable, even. It just only works with other autistics, and with people who know us so well they can make the effort to bridge the gap the other direction. Because either way, bridging that gap is quite effortful. But quite doable.
