Systema was originally taught to only the most elite Spetsnaz operators... who undoubtedly had many years of training in other systems like boxing, sambo, etc. Systema is a set of training drills meant to farther enlighten a fighter to possibilities of combat and let them practice freestyling with nonstandard movements... it was never meant to be the magical system that can destroy all others. If you think you can learn to fight by only training in Systema with out any other training...

I studied with Martin he is the real deal. It is scary how skilled he is. He could easily destroy someone without putting forth much effort. People who criticize Systema clearly have never experienced it in action.

+Mike S What I think the best part about people who do systema is we don't really try to boast about it. I have yet to see anyone comment on how systema is the best & all that. Like I see people who fan boy too much on MMA. We don't really need to prove that much. It's not our job to tell others what is best.

+Warhippie one of my favorite movies is Ip Man. There is a scene in the movie where the greatest karate expert from Japan is brought in to fight against Ip Man, but when these two masters sit down and talk the karate master shows the deepest respect for the kung fu master. (unlike all the other Japanese who showed contempt for kung fu artists) He tells Ip Man that he doesn't believe that one style is greater than another so much as that each individual fighters skill, devotion, etc is what sets them apart. I believe that there is value to be found in all of the martial arts out there, but what any individual takes from it is based on they are willing to put into it. If a person is lazy and doesn't practice then they will not be a very good martial artist. Systema isn't designed for fighting in tournaments. It was designed by Russian military for real world situations. I don't knock any of the other styles out there and I'm not against competitive fighting. An expert martial artist in any style can be a dangerous opponent and I suppose that if an expert in systema wanted to enter a tournament they would probably do just fine.

+hieu401 Personally I believe that there are only so many ways to kick someone, punch someone, throw someone, etc. There are a finite number of wrestling holds and throws that can be applied. I have exposure to several different disciplines. I agree there are a lot of elements that are similar to Aikido. Part of Systema involves using an opponents energy against them which is also a philosophy of Aikido. So you end up with similar elements. Systema also has some wrestling elements to it so it can be compared to MMA, judo, or ju jitsu. It teaches breathing and focusing energy so it can be compared to a number of arts that work on focusing chi. One thing that sets Systema apart is the teaching method. Instead of teaching sets of Kata or endless repetition on the same moves it utilizes special drills which allow you to come up with your own practical solutions. Students are encouraged to experiment and come up with their own ideas of how to handle certain situations. Practical skills and methods are also taught some of which I haven't seen emphasized in very many other arts. Things like how to fall without getting hurt. How to move and fight on the ground or in tight quarters or while sitting down. Systema tries to teach you how to handle being attacked in real world scenarios like while you are in your car or sitting in a restaurant. No system can cover everything but I I like the method.

Sometimes the personal touch is what is desired. Not everyone has the means to kill remotely, but a knife or gun might be available. Sometimes it is spontaneous. Long range has a tendency to involved more errors and collateral damage.

so glad they are shooting about 20% of the body of Wheeler when he's demonstrating movement, the other 80% is naturally useless, like in all martial arts where we notoriously never use more that 15% of our body at once. At least they have nifty little visual thingies over the slowed down partial shots so know we we're learning for real. None of that showing the whole thing with no overlay. That's outdated.

It's so comical to read comments from people who: 1. Have NEVER worked in personal protection, and have no clue about how it works. 2. Have NEVER been in an actual confrontation where they're trying to stop a deranged person from killing another person. 3. Have NEVER been in an actual life and death (fight for your life) situation. Keyboard Warriors are the funniest and saddest goobers on the net.

Systema is I think the best martial art to complete a fight sport. Exemple : Boxe = fight sport and not self-defense. A good boxer will be able to defend himself against an inexperiment fighter but it's still not self-defense. Many systema practionner in Russia do also sambo or judo/jiu-jitsu. It's like you want but I think the best thing to do is to mix systema with a fight sport.

The UFC loves fights that end in a few seconds. They dedicate entire compilation shows to "fastest KOs". The difference is that MMA fighters have to prove their skill against opponents that are not from their own school/club/system and no history/lineage/story about their system will replace or minimize the harsh consequences and realities of physics, bio-mechanics and physiology. MMA might not be real fighting but it is as close as we can get while keeping fighters reasonably safe.

Great response by the way and I do agree with some, except that for me it works. Systema is the only art I have learned and use. It is more than I need and I still have much of it to explore and learn. I am not saying it is the best or the only way, but simply that it is the best for me and my group.

Its likely a glitch in youtube. No doubt with enough time in Systema it becomes effective. IMHO it takes longer to make someone combat effective compared to something like Thai-boxing as an example. Of course part of Thai-boxings effectiveness is its narrow focus on striking. It spends 100% of the training on this as apposed to splitting between weapons, chokes, etc.

It is actually much bette to learn Systema if you have no other fighting background so that you dont have to teach muscle memory over a second or third time. Systema has no moves so to teach someone who has other forms of training is actually harder. Sytema is based from ancient Russian fencing techniques and is best used with mutilple attackers. To much Dogma is attached to other forms of Martial arts that dilutes the purity of the art with trophies or belts.

What!? Bro, you got one of the best Systema instructors in the Western Hemisphere. He lives in Detroit and his name is George Pogagich. He is not formally affiliated with Systema HQ in Toronto and Moscow but he is one of Vlad’s first students. And frankly, he might be the best Systema practitioner in the West after Vlad. Give him a shout. I would train with dude and pick his brain in a heartbeat. Since he’s not formally affiliated with Systema HQ, you’d get less politics (which I believe the Systema community suffers from).

Systema gives freedom of body movements and it is most important in her. But techniques can really be like in other schools because anatomy in humans is the same - two arms and two legs ... The main difference is in performance.
