Systematic mapping of the literature: a key method for literature synthesis.

Synthesizing the ever-growing academic literature is an important skill in academia and science in general. Most will know about narrative reviews and meta-analysis; but perhaps systematic mapping is a less well-known option. I explain the difference among these three approaches, how a systematic mapping is done, and what you can do with the results.

Thanks for the nice introduction to the systematic mapping of the literature. Are there any tools/software to help do systematic mapping, e.g., making the tree diagram to link different literature?

Thanks! People just use R to produce the graphics. But there are tools people have used to help in the paper screening, you might want to check out a recent paper by James Orr in Ecology Letters if you are interested. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/ele.14463
