Thank you! This has had me stumped for weeks. This helped a lot. Most explanations of Root Locus plots just explain the steps required, but not what they mean or how they fit together. Hell I wasnt even entirely sure what it was supposed to be representing. But your explanation makes very clear why all of these pain in the ass steps are needed (or not needed in some cases). Think I've finally got it now.

I want to give you a tip. If reverse writing is difficult for you, normally write and translate the video horizontally with the program (premier, after effects, ..) :))

Did this on MaTLAB and got the same. G = tf([1 -4 20], conv([1 2],[1 4])) k = 0.001 T = series(k,G) R = feedback(T,1) rlocus(R)

You can not have more zeros than poles because that will cause causality
