David Paich has to be one of the most underrated songwriters ever.
@GreyAlienLuv11 жыл бұрын
I was laughing out loud watching Paich, not because I was mocking him but because of my respect for him (being a musician myself). He always had this easy-going, take it day-by-day attitude on stage. I have seen him twice in concert, once being in Nashville, TN back in December 1999 at the old Rhymes Theatre. I got to party with the band after the show and meet him, Michael McDonald, Simon Phillips, and Larry Carlton. Bought Lukather a drink and talked to Michael McDonald. McDonald is undoubtedly one of the nicest pro musicians that I have ever met (this includes the others too). And I agree, he is extremely underrated and his amount of work is huge. These guys were my inspiration as a growing musician in the late 70s and early 80s. Always professional and well-mannered. RIP Jeff Pocaro and Fergie Fredriksen.
@rhagedorn11 жыл бұрын
GreyAlienLuv When you think about it it, with the possible exception of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Toto has to be the ultimate American super group. Paich, Lukather and Jeff Porcaro were all extremely talented and respected session musicians who spent years making other people stars. It's interesting that you mention how nice Michael McDonald is because I was always a little bummed out about his influence on the Doobie Brothers. I was more of a Tom Johnston DB fan. Lukather strikes me as a real humble guy considering what a brilliant player he is. Jeff was as good as they come but Simon is great too. It must have been a thrill partying with these guys.
@GreyAlienLuv11 жыл бұрын
LOL,,I became a huge DB fan after McDonald joined the band. Funny how our tastes were different with that. And yes, Lukather was extremely professional and cool as were the other guys. Somehow during the night, I ended up in a kind of huddle with Lukather, McDonald, and another guy just standing there and McDonald was doing most of the talking and he kept looking at me as though he had known me for years. So cool to do that. And Lukather would look and talk to me as though they had known me for years also. No pompous BS whatsoever. And myself being a life-long musician who's studied vocal and piano at college, and having travelled for years in bands, I was very impressed with their knowledge and professionalism. Also being an amateur photographer, of all the times that I ran out of film, it was that night. To this day I regret not having film. At the concert, there were only about 200 people at the concert. A couple brought about six 12 year old girls to the concert too as a party and they enjoyed the music too. Also bassist David Hungate jumped and jammed a few songs. My buddy that was with me, he is a pro drummer, told me that when Simon Phillips was doing his solo, that he was playing a 4/4 meter with one hand and foot, and playing a 3/4 meter with his other hand and foot. Hey it sounded great to me. He was an incredible that night.

Wow! This is such a mighty performance by these masterful musicians. All the more incredible when you consider the core members (brothers Porcaro, Paich & Luke) were only in their early to mid-20's at the time. Being a schooled musician as a singer and bassist in the early 80s I got a very early start in studying music in my life. Watching this video reminds me of the days when it was fun to play. Musician's used to work hard and really be tight, sing great, stay focused, and it was like being in an orchestra in college; everyone knew their parts and did it professionally. Now days? Just an overall phenomenal performance. Everyone was on point there. Must've been a joy to watch live. Perfect venue as well. Among the room dimly lit with the essence of tobacco smoke, the crowd is enamored with Toto's tantalizing array of musical interlude. They provided such a raw, and brutal sound here, some of their best stuff was made during the late 70's, early 80's. Before they switched sounds to a more power ballad sound in the mid 80s, to early 90's.
