T-Boz of TLC says she was profiled in IL Ruth's Chris

Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins took to social media to call out a Ruth’s Chris Steak House in a Chicago suburb after what she described as racial discrimination. The legendary TLC girl group member had much to say about the alleged mistreatment she received at the restaurant.
“We come to Northbrook, IL to Ruth’s Chris. Now, I got on a hat because, like I said, I’m tired and been traveling all day so my hair is not combed and I’m not gonna take off my hat,” T-Boz told her followers in a video posted to Instagram.
She said, “All of a sudden, 20 minutes in, the manager comes and says I have to take off my hat. I’m like, ‘I’m not gonna do that.’ So she’s like, ‘You gotta sit at the bar.'” Apparently, two other patrons did not have to remove their hats to eat at a table.
T-Boz also had questions about the off-putting experience. The 54-year-old Atlanta native stated, “Come to find out, Shaggy’s crew, my crew, everybody’s crew looks like they’re sitting in massa’s section. Why are all the Black people sitting in this section?”
In addition, T-Boz captioned her Instagram post, “I Don’t Expect Special Treatment But I Expect The RULES To Make Sense… So Make It Make Sense… She Was Contradicting [Herself] And NO ONE DID [THEIR] JOB SO WE LEFT AND DIDN’T EAT THERE… And A lot Of People In Our Crews Felt Racially Profiled… Just Saying.”

It’s is their problem when it’s not enforced entirely. If there was a man there who was checked in, seated, ordered and ate their food before he was told to take his hat off (which also had an offensive verbiage on it), then Ruth’s Chris is not enforcing the rules fairly.

The same thing happened to me just two days ago at Morton’s Steakhouse in Chicago. I’m a black woman who had on a veteran pink baseball cap. As soon as I was asked to remove my hat I did so and was seated in the dining room. However, I noticed that an Asian man and a Caucasian man was wearing baseball caps in the dining area. My husband asked the manager what was going on. The manager apologized and allowed me to put my hat back on. I’m not sure if it was a mistake and the other patrons were overlooked or what…all I know is my dining experience was extraordinary and the food was delicious!

Seating them together because they all came in together or around the same time makes sense. However, to say you'd seat them together based on their aesthetic and presentation is a level of profiling and that's not cool.

I live in Hoffman Estates, IL which is a northwest suburb of Chicago. I've been to her location and the one in South Barrington....it is very classy based around here. Yes, it is very culturally diverse around here but Black people stand out if you know what I mean. I constantly get "you live here" ..."what you do for a living"....they can't take it that I'm a Black female doctor or I often get mistaken for Indian vs Black😂. This restaurant is known for a dress code and the Northern suburbs and certain places here in Chicagoland or city you better look good, smell good and tip good. I'm not saying she wasn't maybe profiled but know the area and know even Spanish and European fish be trying to find a problem for why you don't belong😢

As soon as you said she was wearing a hat, I already knew that they was gonna tell her to take it off. As a frequent goer of fine dining restaurant, they are very strict about their dress code to EVERYONE

Ruth Chris has a dress code period! That's not being racist. I promise these celebrities think they are above all and any rules!!! She should have went to another restaurant. Point blank period. Why didn't she take a picture of the others with the hats on?

I love Tionne but she has been in the game too long. She knows the rules. All she had to say was “Have you heard the songs Waterfalls or No Scrubs? That’s me. Please let me wear my hat or sit some place private.” 9/10 it wouldn’t even be an issue.

Young me uloved me some T-Boz, but as I ’ve gotten older, I try to learn as little as possible about these celebrities. I tried to read her book, and realized I truly just don't like her. I thought it was just Chilli that was annoying, but Tionne just doesn't seem like a nice person. I related to her because we both have sickle cell. but that's where our similarities end.

I grew up not far from that area and worked in NBK. The Ruth Chris is in a predominantly business zone. Meaning Jim, Jack, and George are in town on business and this is their night away from the family. We’re talking dress slacks, button ups, polo shirts displaying company logos on the pocket. Just maybe the large groups were put in an area designed for large groups. Maybe the server in that area is more seasoned and can handle large groups. There are so many ways we can go other than race. Did we just pick race because we didn’t see a lot of us? Here’s a thought, reserve the private dining room and wear whatever you want. Oh and by the way, Northbrook is Northbrook, not Chicago.

Well, I never understood the hat rule … so I agree with T Boz … But why not just say : “M’am, we don’t usually allow headwear at the dining area so please keep that in mind for next time”. Also, why would anyone else really care about other patrons wearing a hat?? I never notice or care about that stuff myself. Let people dress how they want, and stop micromanaging adults!!

This definitely wasn't racism or racial profiling. She was just out of dress code and her being a celebrity didn't change that fact. What I am actually really disappointed in was how she was trying to be petty and vengeful towards the restaurant. She believes that because of her influence that her fans will take her side, and it'll effect the restaurant in some way. Why else keep showing the Name of the place over and over again? I love T-boz but Tionne could've handled it differently.

I was too. The waitress in Marina Del Rey took our order in all black with white cat hair all over her uniform. She came back with my burger. She came back with no hair on her clothes. When I opened my burger to dress it the cat hair was all over the meat of my burger. Once I discovered it as she walked away she never came back. The sent the black busboy to take care of us for the rest of the visit. I’m one to over compensate. I say thank you and I tend over tip. Her name rhymes with panda and hope to God she doesn’t work there anymore. As we left she was on the same escalator steps up from us. She was gloating and flipping her hair. She knew she was wrong and had gotten away with it.

The problem is that a lot of people do not understand the rules of etiquette in public places coupled with the casualness of everyday dress now. Men take off all hats inside-dress and casual hats. Women are allowed to keep formal dress hats on inside. But since most women no longer wear dress hats, it’s a rule that does not apply really in society anymore. Baseball caps are casual and should not be worn by anyone over the age 18. Love T Boz but she’s been in the biz long enough to understand public attire for a celebrity in public spaces. 🥩

Q, you hit the nail on the head. The couple of times I happen to see Tboz in the city, she was surrounded by a huge entourage and had on a baseball cap (now why you need an entourage to go the Apple store is beyond me lol). I'm sure this was the case when she went into Ruth Chris and MAYBE they assumed she'd remove the hat once seated.
