Chris thank you for these T& E videos they are so informative on the different models and makers of fine tubas out there , in my opinion the Eastman tubas seem to very well made and hearing you demo this instrument makes the proof of that ! i shall be looking forward to your future videos and work with the Eastman company , myself being primarily a BBb & Eb tuba player i and eager to see what is in store with Eastman and yourself for tubas in those keys . thanks so much and will be looking forward to more videos and updates .

You sound fantastic as always, Chris! That Eastman suits you well. I've been very fortunate to have tried both a prototype and a production model of the EBC836, and they are truly special horns. Hats off to you on your new partnership as well. I'm looking forward to seeing what Eastman brings to the table in the near future!

Thanks for another well-done, informative review. Most of the tuba community knows your reputation and character - we know we’ll get the straight story on everything from you. These videos are incredibly helpful, and they are a fantastic fix for us tuba junkies who never seem to get enough. Thanks again!

Congrats on your partnership with Eastman Music Co. I have had the opportunity to play several EBC836s and can say without a doubt, it is one of the best 6/4 CC tubas I have played. The ergonomic design and the characteristic York sound are superb! I can’t wait to see what you can contribute to Eastman!

@@cheers623I have a question that seems to be more preference than anything but I thought I'd get your opinion on specifically this horn... Feel free to message me privately if desired (if that's still a thing on KZbin). When it comes to tubas, I've only owned ones with a lacquered finish. I noticed that in T&E#1 you played a lacquered version of this horn. Did you have any opinion on specifically the 836s difference between lacquered and finish? Less important question regarding finish: home much time should I expect to put into polishing/wiping a silver finish? (A couple times a year? Less/more? Depends on use?) Thanks for your time! My local Eastman dealer said they can't get a demo version at the moment, but can get a new one on order that "could" become mine if I like it (gotta put half down though, so I want to try to make sure they get the right one!)
I'm officially sold! Need to get myself on a waiting list

Steven, I’ve been asked for exactly that more times than I can count. The logistical problem is getting them all together at the same time. The other problem is that I don’t think it would necessarily be fair to all the horns represented. By that I mean that I’d naturally favor (with my playing) the ones that are more suited to my particular strengths and so not give a fair representation of each horn. I don’t feel that I’m a consistent or strong enough player to give each horn a fair shake, so to speak. It’s a neat idea but harder to execute than you’d think! Nevertheless, thanks for your input and keep floating ideas of testify you’d like to see...I’m old enough to never say never!

Chris Olka Thank you so much for your reply. If and when you do return to South or Southwest Florida, would your itinerary be posted anywhere? I would be very interested in attending. With regard to the weather, it has been a little chilly down here (Sarasota) for a couple of days, but it is rebounding today with more seasonal temperatures, which is why I moved here from New England. It’s all relative I suppose! Be well.

Chris, I never thought I’d say it but I think I like your sound on this instrument better than the Yamaha York. Might just be me, but I feel like it takes out a lot of the edge and keeps your sound nice and tuba round. Just my 2 cents
@jerrybyers21723 жыл бұрын
Olka makes the horn sound GREAT! It would tempt me to buy one, except that such a purchase would amount to giving a little financial support to China. So I'll spend a lot more money and get a Meinl Weston instead.

Sub-par microphone on the iPad aside, I think your tone on this horn is better than your Yamaha. It sounded fuller and less edgy at normal volumes. If I was in the market for a new CC, I would definitely give a try. I find it admirable that you want to branch out, as it were, to different styles of playing on different instruments. I'm not a professional by any means, but I have played in large concert bands, small concert bands, college pep bands, and even played with a group of old men who played old marches and popular songs from nearly 100 years before, and each had its rewarding points musically. I've had the opportunity to play shiny new rotary horns, to old horns that have aged well, to absolute travesties. Enjoy the search and get what you like (I passed up the opportunity to get a new Miraphone 191 years ago and wish I hadn't). In the meantime, if you need a slightly flat ancient Eb to play the top line on American marches or an old recording bell BBb for concert band music, I can help you out. ;)

Hi Chris, thanks for your great reviews of this Eastman. I will test this beautiful Tuba in Few months at my local dealer. Dear Chris, a 6/4 tuba looks to me as too much for most of the compositions; Wagner, Prokofiev and little more. Am I wrong? What do you think? Don’t you think that such powerful instrument can easily break the sonority balance in an orchestral performance? Can you give a pair of tips to avoid that inconvenience?

Your low notes have almost no fundamental and are recognizable only due to the non-linearity of the ear! Musicians use meaningless terms to describe sound quality. Learn some simple acoustics.
@cheers6235 жыл бұрын
I’d think that a self-appointed acoustical expert such as yourself would know that you couldn’t make an accurate observation about how much or how little fundamental is in the sound of the tuba based on a recording made on an iPad. But what do I know? I’ll tell you what I Do know. You’re clearly not interested in contributing anything positive. I’m sorry for whatever triggered your deep seated insecurities such that you felt the need to attack me. Enjoy your life...

@fredyoung83565 жыл бұрын
I am not a self appointed expert. I am a retired full professor at the CMU in Pittsburgh who has published more than 100 scientific papers in the Acoustical Society of America Journal. I have measured the harmonic content of many tubas and found them to be very lacking in fundamental. Do you believe Richard Wagner wanted a bunch of harmonics around middle C in his low A at 55 Hz in the beginning of the Overture to Die Meistersinger? You have a very poor tone in general!
@jonathanbradshaw56545 жыл бұрын
Fred Young, How does one have a "poor tone" and win multiple major symphony orchestra positions?
