To Khmer (Cambodia) vocabulary, the word Kuk here can refer (dry land which usually doesn’t stay close to the sea like around Laos present day or famously Chenla Land, or anywhere upper of Dangrek Mountain), however Kuk also mean “jail”as as well. But based on Khmer and French historian, Syam Kuk here mean the mercenaries people that come to Khmer land to do trade or Khmer hire them to go to war with other Khmer armies to fight other state but there’s never a clear point out who Syam Kuk people come from since Khmer often call Thai people as Tai or Siem. However, there are some misunderstandings between Thai people on Khmer history on the infamously “Khom”. According to Chinese records, Thai people called as Hsien not Siam, the same way Chinese called Khmer as Gao Mien or Thai refer to Khmer as GaoMien which later pronounced as Khamen. In addition, some Thai in the past also called Khmer as Khom which derived from Khmer word “Krom” which can be pronounced as Khom or Krom in Cambodia. It refer to lower land of Dangrek mountain which is Cambodia present day. Similarly, khmer people also call “lower Cambodia land”, as Krom or Khom just like how we call Khmer people in Vietnam as Khmer Krom or Khmer Khom or Kampuchea Krom or Khom. Therefore, the dispute of Thai people claiming Khom is actually the builder of Angkor Wat is totally true since “Khom” itself always refer to Khmer people living in Cambodia today. But there are some Thai actually buying into the twist story say that Khmer and Khom are not the same although according to Vietnam, Champa, Java and Chinese record called Srok Khmer or Komboj or Camboge under French which later Cambodia. Honestly, based on my observation on history, Khmer, Cham, Mon, Laos and Tai people used to live together under one country or state known as Komboj or Khmer Empire which dominate and unite strongly by Khmer people or majority of the race are Khmer people but after the fall of Angkor in 1432, other royal in Siam that grown power immensely in Sokothai and Ayuthaya then declare as their own independent state along with Lanxang. Just like ancient China history during Qin dynasty the country unite as one but later after lose power, there are other new states start to flourish. However, I want to point out that look at Khmer, Laos, Mon, Cham and Thai, for some reason, majority of us look alike except if we mix race with Chinese or India. Thus, this can evidently point out that despite race or ethnicity we believe to be, however we’re all connected mostly through history or our long long long time ancestors that exist before 01 BC.
