T.M. Landry College Prep, a predominately black Louisiana school, made headlines for sending its students to some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges. But a New York Times investigation alleges that the school has been abusing students, doctoring college applications and falsifying transcripts. Will Stancil, a research fellow at the University of Minnesota, joined NBC News THINK to talk about why it was so easy to buy into the story T.M. Landry told about itself.

You neglected to mention that those former Landry students that are doing well at higher level schools, spent only a short time there. Further, Louisiana State Police are now investigating Landry for 10+ more allegations, including physical abuse and forcing students to eat rat feces. Younger students are testing years behind their public school peers. To, unfairly, credit Landry with the success of its few, former, short- term students who are doing well, is dangerous. Still today, some insist on keeping the doors open and the Landrys employed as teachers. Videos like this, that gives Landry undue credit, are the reason that the school has not closed as it should.

When did he say this? His whole point is that we as a country were ignorant to believe that simply putting underprivileged, minority children in a specific school would have somehow solved the systemic issues facing them and that they would miraculously all be accepted into Harvard, Brown, NYU, Yale, etc. Additionally, he makes the argument that these children who were actually in this horribly structured, falsified, abusive environment (where they were not actually learning the material to the full extent that they should have been) were still able to survive and thrive in top colleges. Thus, he is asking the question: Is college/educational meritocracy (or the idea that top colleges are harder, require more intelligent students, are places where only the brightest and most prepared students can thrive, and epicenters of impressive knowledge) really valid? Are we all getting more or less the same education at whatever university? Can students who do not pass through every required class in high school, do not have exceptionally impressive transcripts, and are generally unprepared for college by educational standards, succeed at our top schools? And if so, why the meritocracy? What makes these schools better than your state school? Never once did he ever say "they're okay" for abusing children.

Rather than teaching students what to think, education should teach them how to think. The general level of discourse in American society today shows an appalling lack of education, and intolerance for the opinions of others. Science is denigrated when it doesn't marry well with one's ideological or financial interest.

For any of you wondering about “The Ellen Kid” I just wanna make it clear that he UNDOUBTEDLY and FIRMLY does NOT fit in at Harvard - he STANDS OUT for his top-tier intellect, genuine character and relentless advocacy for the causes he cares for.

Thanks for letting us know. This does not change the fact that he got into Harvard through a school currently accused of extreme fraud and abuse. There are other top-tier et.c people who did not get accepted just because he did.

1 main reason for success is believing that you are smart. When these children got into these big colleges they believe that they are actually smart so they whole heartily believe that they can make it, making themselves into smart people.

All I know is that the maybe 15 or so people I know who have graduated from ivy league unis or oxbridge, are all very intelligent, in the truly quick thinking sense, and extremely articulate. So, I m not sure about the reporter's luck claim. Which isn't to say that I don't know many more people who are just as intelligent, but went to universities in different countries, or even not at all.

"It's not totally clear how they got away with ir for eso long." Yes it us. The media and liberal academia didn't care about basic red flags like lack of SAT scores or even that the school was unaccredited. The leftist institutions just desperately wanted to believe anything that conformed to their antiwhite, anti-asian agenda.
