上篇：時代與影史
香港電影資料館年前從美國尋得一批散佚多年的上世紀三、四十年代香港影片及送檢檔案資料。以這些珍貴線索為本，資料館於2021年1月9至10日，透過視像會議形式，舉辦「從無聲到有聲--1930至1940年代香港電影」研討會，邀來數十位本地及海內外學者和研究者，在線上展開探索及討論。現將研討會的精彩內容選輯為上、下篇兩集，與大眾分享。
上篇以「時代與影史」為題，分為「從無聲到有聲」、「上海-香港」、「國防電影」、「紀錄片」及「戰後復員」五個章節。香港電影在二十世紀初如何從默片走到有聲片？中日戰爭爆發前後，香港影業如何發展？影人又如何透過作品回應時代？由各講者為我們逐一探討。
論文全文將於2022年初結集成書，敬請密切留意！

Part 1: Era and Film History
Years ago, the Hong Kong Film Archive acquired from the US a stash of long-lost Hong Kong films from the 1930s to 1940s as well as batches of archival documents sent for the US censorship, which comprised of over several hundreds of Hong Kong film titles. Based on the precious clues offered up by these items, the Archive convened the online symposium ‘From Silent to Sound-Hong Kong Films of the 1930s and 1940s’ on 9-10 January 2021, together with a few dozen of local, Mainland and overseas researchers and scholars. We have now condensed and edited the symposium into two parts to share with the public.
The theme of Part 1 is ‘Era and Film History’. It is divided into five chapters, namely ‘From Silent to Sound’, ‘National Defence Films’, ‘Documentaries’ and ‘Post-war Demobilisation’. How Hong Kong films evolved from silent to sound in the early 20th century? Before and after the War of Resistance Against the Japanese, how did local cinema cope with the turbulent periods in the city’s history? How did filmmakers respond to the times through their work? Our speakers will explore further all these key topics.
Papers presented by speakers will be further compiled into an edited volume by the Archive in early 2022. Stay tuned for more details.
