But the E231 series trains aren't so old as yet, why replace them so early?

Yes, E231-500 Series is not old. So ,Train will not be scrapped and is used on other route. The policy of JR East introduces new train to routes with many users, and uses it on other routes without being scrapped.

Many Japanese railway fans have the same idea. They think E235 Series design is eccentric.
