Musicians are not Producers and a person can be both. A co producer is anyone who helped create the song. The producer is the person with the Responsibility and authority to create the song from begining to end. Quincy Jones brought in the guitar player on Bad who created the guitar line he was a co producer but Quincy decided what to use from the guitar session and where to place it in the song. He had the authority to do that and the responsibility complete the song.

Composers know what the sound they want. Musicians can be used to create the sound. Producers clean up and balance the sound being heard. Lots of producers are also composers. Lots of composers own production companies to get lots of musicians through the building to have access to the people who have the sound they like.

A producer is someone who arranges the song and produces the song. You do not need to know how to make beats to be a producer. I can purchase or sample 15 stock beats on youtube right now and hire an engineer to cut and paste the best shit out of each beat and I will get the producer credit for it. Why? Because I arranged the music. Those hits in the 90s with the Hitmen would not exist without Diddy editing the content from the producers who were making the music.

The same way a producer hires a guitar player or keyboardist to work on a track, that's the same way he can hire a "beat maker" to lay down a drum pattern. Puffy'Diddy is a producer. Most of the Hitmen were beat makers (outside of Chucky, Stevie, Mario Rashad... ),. That's why they had little to no success outside of Bad boy. Puff/Diddy knew how to construct a RECORD, not just a dope instrumental.
