T'Pol's emotions were "always to close to the surface" because her father was- or is- a Romulan sleeper agent...planned to be revealed in Season 5 per Manny Coto. Future episodes would've revealed T'Les always knew and that he may not be dead but living back in the Romulan homeworld, then further seasons had T'Pol meet her half Sister, a Romulan Commander. Pity, would've been very interesting story arc.

Interesting . . I always felt that Jolene Blalock was taking too much artistic license, but the storyline you mentioned could explain her choices.
@jcreed09
@jcreed09 2 жыл бұрын
@@williamphillips6049 I think Jolene's portrayal of T'Pol as an individual with her own needs and wants was way ahead of its time, she doesn't want to get married to man she barely knows, doesn't want to live the life of typical Vulcan woman, she wants to explore the Galaxy and let's be real, T'Pol is a passionate woman overall. And just not T'Pol, I credit "Enterprise" with giving these early era Vulcans a more of a nuanced side and NOT the stoic Space Liberals of the 24th Century, the 22nd Century Vulcans are paranoid, arrogant, outright liars- P'Jemm for example- conservative to a fault, shown the Vulcans are stuck in neutral and have been for a long time, alarmed at the rapid pace of Human advancement.
@williamphillips6049
@williamphillips6049 2 жыл бұрын
@@jcreed09 One of the first things I noticed about Jolene Blalock was her ability to emote passion by just a touch or a glance. Her eyes are intense and beautiful. It is necessary, natural and dare we say; logical, for all actors and actresses alike to give their personal interpretation to a role. This can be a challenge when dealing with established characters which are ingrained into our consciousness. I wish and look forward to seeing Ms. Blalock in other roles. I hope she is not stuck with T'Pol as Leonard Nimoy was with Spock. It simply is not fair to the actor. Excessive artistic license CAN be damaging to any series as a whole. I feel this is what happened to the latest reincarnation with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and the recasting of the other original TV series characters; Bones, McCoy, Uhura, etc. So much licence, re-imagining, re-doing and ultra modern CGI ultimately undermined it. Consequently; it was ended. Thank God. I don't believe this is all what happened with Enterprise's cancelation but I believe it had something to do with it. This is especially a problem with "Pre-quels": Shows that claim storyline that happens before the original. Speaking for myself at least; I have a very difficult time believing in anything without consistency.

Vulcans supposedly suppress their emotions, yet in this clip alone there is: -Pride -vanity/ego -abuse of authority (punishing the mother for an adult child not ‘obeying’) -greed (lust for power/position) -empathy and kindness for Tripp (from T’Les)

We saw a lot of Vulcans in Enterprise, and they maintained a thin veneer of logic, paying lip service to their official philosophy. Their great talent, IMHO, was not logic but rationalization. It was doing what they wanted to do, and then inventing justifications afterwards. Here's a prime example. . . The High Command blamed T'pol for the P'jem incident, based on what facts? And then punished her mother, based on what logic? I'm sure they must have invented some elaborate and seemingly-logical explanation to convince themselves that this was acceptable. I think the series had so many similar incidents that it must have been deliberate on the part of the writers.

I think they had to be written that way to make the audience consider them different and not quite friends to humanity yet. They look like us but are superior physically and mentally. They lost something along the way ( the devotion to pure logic ) which is why we facinate and scare them. Better to keep tabs on us by staying close by like a nanny or babysitter. A slap on the wrist( or neck pinch ) when things get out of hand. 😆

@@adambrown3918 I don't think that they had to do it, but I agree that is why they did it. I think they didn't need to make the Vulcan government corrupt, but they also didn't need to make T'Pol more human than Vulcan. By the fourth season they had cleaned up a lot of the mess from the earlier seasons and retconned or explained a lot of it away, but I think it was part of what caused the viewership to drop off. That and over-saturation of the franchise. People might think that I don't like this show because I'm very critical of certain things about it, but nothing could be further from the truth. I started writing during this show. I had friends who worked on the show. It had a number of personal connections for me. I was deeply saddened when it ended, because it had finally found its legs.

Massaro-Did they name the thief of T'Pol and Trip's DNA after you? I guess it's a common name anyway. One can be critical of "Star Trek" and still like it. Same here. I recall that V'Las and his assistant were found to be Romulans. The man-Sopek-T'Pol saved in "The Shadows of P'Jem" was mentioned in a future novel as a Romulan as well I believe. The Vulcans in the monastery-"The Andorian Incident" were spying on the Andorians so they weren't just wary of humans. You think the viewers would have liked T'Pol as much if she remained so aloof for 4 years straight? Even Spock wasn't always so robot like; but then again, he was 1/2 human. I liked Kirstie Alley's Saavik better as I believed her Romulan 1/2 was more likeable than Robin Curtis's wooden style. Maybe Manny Coto did have plans for T'Pol's ocassional behaviour and it wasn't just from her Trellium addiction. She was a bit emotional at times before she was exposed to both Pa'nar Syndrome and Trellium: I think that having a more positive feedback from the human crew allowed her to open up with them and change. Why else would she change her uniform and hairstyle in the 3rd season? She felt more accepted. Had she not, she would have stayed the same way or gone back to Vulcan. She needed them as much as they needed her. In other words, I liked her as much as the others.

She did appear in a number of movies afterwards, but her movie career never really took off and she more or less retired as you said. I know at one point she said she'd be willing to an ENT movie, but I think the bitter ending of ENT and the attitude of CBS at the time torpedoed all chances of that happen, but still we can only hope. If they were to do one though (very unlikely) it would have to happen very very soon as many of the cast members have age A LOT. Particularly Scott Bakula (Archer) and John Billingsley (Phlox). I like the pairing of human and Vulcan. Vulcan's, to remind humans to take a step back from emotion when it's time to embrace logic Human's, to remind Vulcan's that, "Nah, it's time to get emotional, let me do it for you!" I think it's probably cathartic, to watch a human go off on somebody who is irksome to a Vulcan, even though their enotional state won't allow them to do the same. A Vulcan doesn't have to rage, he can still enjoy the sound of laughter, and walk away with the good brain juices those permit, without needing to do it themselves. It's like you know coffee is bad for you, so you don't buy it yourself, but you still have a partner who will let you have a sip/a cup of there's from time to time (conversely, also a friend to be like, "How much coffee have you had? You should cut back!")

Interesting that the hyper-rational Vulcans are also competely hierarchical in organization and ritualistic in practice. Given the general drift of Star Trek attitudes, that's quite counter-intuitive. But then, the whole ST "mythos" is rooted in unreality and contradiction.
@chrisloesch1870
@chrisloesch1870 2 жыл бұрын
It's really not that surprising though. Vulcans were a clan / warrior society prior to the "awakening" when they turned to logic. Before that everything was clan warfare similar to much of earth's early history, except they took it to the extreme. Their buried emotions were even more powerful than a human's and why they devoted so much time and energy to keep them under control otherwise it consumed them in total anger, lust, etc. This is even hinted at in the original series with Spock. Much of what they did in ritual was to cloak and shield the occasional (but necessary) surfacings of those suppressed primitive instincts such as Pon'Far or the Kal'if'fee when warriors would fight to the death for a mate. All of that dated back to the times before the awakening and the teachings of Surak which ultimately saved their civilization from total annihilation. Before the awakening the clans / families routinely attacked one another, slaughtered each other, took slaves, etc. But yeah just like any other fiction the ST mythos is rooted in unreality, but it is interesting to read. Some of the fan fiction pieces on fan.net are quite interesting.

@@Miss_Myth at least they made the effort to fit it into canon. Kirk's enterprise was the first star fleet/federation ship named enterprise. This doesn't mean there weren't any ships named enterprise before it. As it is shown in enterprise's intro sequence, the name enterprise dates way back to sailing ships. So in this way they fitted the NX enterprise neatly into canon. It was earth's first true star ship, but since star fleet didn't really exist yet until the formation of the federation, it wasn't the first federation/star fleet ship named enterprise. At least they tried to explain it with a reasonable assumption that requires minimum suspense of belief. In modern trek however they shit over canon every episode and don't even try to fit things into the existing canon...

@@wakcedout Yup it's made clear in TOS, TNG, and so on and then mostly in enterprise, that Vulcans are just as secretive as the Romulans. They were after all related species. In such a secretive society marred in tradition, ritual, etc it isn't that surprising that something that should be common knowledge was kept secret even from their own population. People have a romantic view of the Vulcans because of Spock. But even in TOS we see vulcan society is quite harsh, ritualistic, and secretive especially towards outsiders. I actually loved what they did with the Vulcans in enterprise, deepening them as a more complex race that themselves were going through an evolution and change because of first contact with us annoying, emotional humans.

I would have liked to see T'Pol say "I have great respect for Captain Archer as well and I have no plans to produce offspring with him either. When I first came aboard the Human ship, I hoped to ease their misgivings about Vulcans. Now I begin to suspect that their misgiving are well founded. Perhaps I was blinded by my Vulcan arrogance. Perhaps I should learn to give more credence to the Humans' intuition. It certainly seems to have spotted an issue I and many Vulcans have overlooked." I find that the Humans are not the only species here that are overlooking the perception of a species they consider lower than themselves. (Trip and Archer not recognizing Porthos' correct judgement of T'Pol when she first came aboard)

Tpols mother is so right, reckless actions have consequences, one must pay and suffer that. Tpol turned against the interests of her people in the monastery disaster you cant then expect them to overlook that or disregard that. Her poor mother has to suffer. The whole series was very anti-Vulcan for no reason at all really other than to demonstrate the leftist/liberal value of ingratitude, disloyalty, and turning/betraying on your friends/allies.
@refulgent_fanta

The Vulcan government's actions also had consequences, not just T'Pol's. In the end they were the ones that decided to disrespect their own culture and desecrate an ancient monastery. And you're missing an important aspect here. These were not the Vulcans we're used to from the other shows. Their leadership was corrupted by Romulan agents. Also, they were beginning to stray from Surak's teachings.
