If Marc didnt pass away in 1977. I believe they would be one of the biggest bands in rock history. They began the glam rock trend. The album Electric Warrior that this song is from my opinion. One of the greatest albums of all time

The drummer with all the great fills is Bill Legend, the only surviving member from the best known T. Rex line-up. Not enough gets said about the stellar rhythm section from the classic years. Legend on drums and Steve Currie on bass - Linc Hayes would refer to them as "Solid".

Pardon the History lesson, but: Glam Rock and Glam Metal are two *very* distinct genres. Glam Rock was only around between 1970-1975, and was almost entirely a UK phenomenon. Glam Metal lasted from about 1983-91 and was mostly a US phenomenon. Glam Metal pulled a little bit of influence from UK Glam Rock, but it was mostly influenced by Heavy Metal and Hard Rock. UK Glam, on the other hand, was a pioneering blend of guitar-based Bupple-Gum Pop with androgynous, space-age Art Rock. T. Rex's contemporaries in UK Glam were David Bowie, Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople, Sparks, Cockney Rebel, Gary Glitter, Slade, Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Mud, The Rubettes, Bay City Rollers, Alvin Stardust, Wizzard, Chicory Tip, Sailor, and UK Glam Rock also helped launch the careers of major acts like Elton John ("Rocket Man", "Benny and the Jets", "Crocodile Rock", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting") and Queen ("Now I'm Here", "Killer Queen", "Seven Seas of Rhye"). Even ABBA started out as a Glam Rock act with "Waterloo" and "S.O.S.". American hipsters like Iggy Pop (and The Stooges) as well as Lou Reed (formerly of influential act The Velvet Underground) benefitted from working with Bowie and briefly dipped their toes in the UK Glam scene, giving Reed his only major hit single ("Walk on the Wild Side" 1972). Other American acts like KISS ("Christine Sixteen", "Strutter") and Alice Cooper ("I'm 18", "School's Out", "Teenage Lament 1974") were also adjacent to the scene and proto-Punk act The New York Dolls were also an influence. UK Glam Rock from the 1970s was one of the first full-color Pop movements, and in the UK T. Rextacy rivaled Beatlemania from a few years earlier. The songs were usually short and punchy (lots of stomping, clapping, and chanting), but very melodic, and often well-produced - with post-psychedelic effects like Flange, Phasing, and heavy Delay/Echo and splashes of synthesizers to spice up the fuzzy, sustained guitar leads. The beats were often shuffling or redolent of early Rock'n'Roll from the 1950s and early 60s. In fact "good ol' Rock'n'Roll" is one of the main lyrical/conceptual themes that Glam was built around, along with being a teenager, outer space, and gender variance. Speaking of gender, Glam acts often dressed and acted androgynously and/or claimed to be bisexual, gay, and third gender in interviews. They wore glitter, makeup, platform heels, and feminine colors and fabrics, and at least one member of each major act played this up more than the others. This was a welcome respite from the visually unremarkable, hirsute, bearded, denim-clad, macho rockers of the era, and was probably the main thing that Glam Metal borrowed from the movement a decade later. Punk, Postpunk, Power Pop, New Romantic, Goth, and Synthpop also borrowed heavily from UK Glam. T. Rex was the first major act to splash on some glitter and carve out the niche between Art Rock and Bubblegum accessibility, with Slade, Sweet, Bowie, Roxy, and the rest following shortly after and outlasting his meteoric rise and his all-too-brief run of megastardom. UK Glam was the most interesting Pop movement of the first half of the 1970s, but its artists were very creative and artistically restless, with major acts like David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Sparks edging toward Electronic, Funk, and Disco-influenced sounds (predicting New Wave and Postpunk) in the second half of the 1970s. Queen and Elton John only got more famous, charting out lots of other styles in their palette (though even late-70s Queen songs like "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions" were Glam as hell). Most of the other Glam acts eventually fizzled out or packed it in, while others continued to devolve into self-parody. But taken as a whole, UK Glam was a mightily singular and influential genre. It spawned and influenced tons of key artists and later movements. Its only major link to GlamMetal was sartorial, though one could argue that a number of major Glam Metal tracks bear a bit of UK Glam influence, including Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It", Skid Row "Youth Gone Wild", Poison "Nothin' But a Good Time", Def Leppard "Rocket" (which actually namedrops Bowie and Bolan), and Warrant "Where the Down Boys Go". But mostly, these are two very distinct genres and movements with very different fandoms and from at least a decade apart. Besides the songs I already listed, here's a brief list of other songs to check out, if you haven't already... Songs that made the US charts are marked with *** "Metal Guru" T. Rex "Chariot Choogle" T. Rex "Jeepster" T. Rex "Children of the Revolution" T. Rex "Ride a White Swan" T. Rex "Hot Love" T. Rex "Telegram Sam" T. Rex "20th Century Boy" T. Glam Rock is such a huge part of our musical culture that it's hard to imagine that isn't the case everywhere. People are missing out! I was lucky there was a resurgence in the 00s, so I got into T.Rex, Roxy Music in highschool, and my sister had been listening to Suzi Quarto, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed since we were kids.

Marc Bolan started out as a psychedelic folk duo, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and then picked up the electric guitar and became T. Rex. This album came out in 1971, my first year in college. Big T. Rex fan here, although no one else in my dorm was really into it. Those haunting background vocals were by Flo and Eddie, actually Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman from the 60's group The Turtles. They appeared on his albums often. Bolan had a car fetish and its ironic (or maybe not) that he died in a car accident. T. Rex's second album, The Slider, had cover photography from Ringo Starr, which was really cool. Other songs to check out: Rip Off, Jeepster, Mambo Sun, the exquisite title cut, The Slider, Monolith and the incredible dance track, Telegram Sam. And thanks for the mention of Donovan, another great artist!

Marc Bolan is a genius, I agree with Nick that this song is reminiscent of different styles and sounds of individual groups, this is how it was in the 70s, many groups had this sound, a mixture of psychedelia and progressive rock, perhaps jazz. It’s a shame that such a talented musician as Marc Bolan left us early; be sure to add the song “Bang a Gong (Get It on)” from the same 1971 album “Electric Warrior” to your list of reactions.

I truly think it's one of the most amazing songs ever written, on the best album ever released. But I can see how Glam Rock would have been too out there for the US. I hope they'll play this at my funeral, even though I made my entire family sick listening to it on repeat as a teen 😂 And how can you not love Bang A Gong (Get It On)?! 🤣

The backwards guitar work towards the end of the song reminds me of John Frusciante during his Niandra Lades period of the mid-90s. He credits Marc Bolan as an influence in many interviews, and I can hear the influence from this song

Glam Rock is 70s, not 80s. Artists like David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Sweet, Slade, Mud, Roxy Music and Gary Glitter were extremely popular Glam Rock acts in the 1970s. It declined after the mid-1970s, but influenced other musical genres including punk rock, glam metal, death rock and gothic rock. The New Romantic movement, which began as an underground fashion subculture movement in nightclubs in the late 1970s before becoming mainstream in the early 80s, was also inspired by the visuals of the glam rock era.

The song is not about "dancing". It is a metaphor. The song is about reincarnation. Marc Bolan was on of Bowie's (Bolan also influened Bono, the Clash and much of the punk movement) was most signficant influences. Bowie's "Lady Stardust" is about Bolan. Bolan was the initiator of "Glam Rock". And along with Syd Barrett was considered one of the most lyrically inventive writers of the era. Tony Visconti produced Bolan and Bowie

He sings of dancing himself "out the womb" and "into the tomb", but doesn't sound like a joyful song. Very odd, yet memorable song. I agree that it is more about the accompanying music than the vocals. Good pick, Boys!
