Jackson's character was killed by Raptors in the building with the circuit breakers. That's why Ellie followed after and did the same job he'd gone to do. They were going to film his death scene, but there was a storm at the shooting location and they ran out of time. You did see Jackson's severed arm fall down on Ellie's shoulder. That's a pretty strong implication.

The death scene actually included a Darth Vadersaurus who took his arm off but they had to cut out all previous scenes with the Darth Vadersaurus for time so it wouldn't make sense for it to suddenly show up at the end so they just let it be the raptor instead.

When he said "This is one of the coolest scenes ever", I started to realize: It probably is! The T-Rex-Paddock-Breakout-Scene is one of the most iconic scenes in the entire film. And this film, when it came out, set new standards for filmmaking and highly influenced the way films are being made to this day.

Birds evolving from dinosaurs is pretty common knowledge nowadays, but when this movie was made back in the early 90s it was still a pretty new and debated topic. That's why the movie appears to be so fixated on it.

The Novel by Crichton Goes into this far more too. There is a great conversation between Hammond and Dr. Wu. Wu wants to move onto a new version of dinosaurs not based on the new acquired knowledge of bird like dinos, but slow and "domesticated" dinosaurs that people are more accustomed to, but Hammond just wants them to be REAL. The novel is SOOOO good and the main reason I read and loved his other works.

@@SigridFrings True that it wasn't a 'new' concept within the scientific world (first being discovered and discussed in the 1960s), but it wasn't a common knowledge yet. This movie was the first exposure to the theory that a lot of poeple had in the 90s.

Plus, not all dinosaurs turned into birds, only those that trace their evolution to the dinosaurs we call raptors. All the other dinosaurs are gone. In my mind, evolution states that species adapt to their environment over thousands and millions of years, and therefore, various gene features and traits are shut off in the DNA, deactivated. Technically speaking, we all, humans included, must have deactivated genes that are just leftovers. It's sort of like the ledger to a block chain; it's a record. If a modern geneticist were to reactivate dormant genes or DNA, what do we get? Of course, such a program could be the most inhumane and immoral scientific project once we realize many iterations need to be born to produce everything that is currently extinct.

@@pavanbiliyar Minor correction: theropods in general are the branch of dinosaurs that modern birds descend from, with the emu and ostrich being the modern animals that are closest to their ancestors in both build and musculature. There is, so far, no definitive proof that modern birds descend solely from the raptor family.

Honestly we really need to thank this movie for what it did to the paleontology field. Our knowledge of dinosaurs has expanded exponentially in the last 30 years thanks to scientists who got their first taste from watching this film.

Palaeontology is the field you're thinking of. Archaeologists work with human remains and human cultural materials. There can be a small overlap of the fields. Usually with regards to physical anthropology and human evolution. Generally speaking though archaeologists deal with timescales in the hundreds to the thousands whilst palaeontologists work in millions.

And before they started this film, known species of velociraptors were only 3 ft tall. 6ft tall ones were considered an exaggeration. But sometime in there, while writing or filming this movie, they discovered 6 ft tall raptors (the Utahraptor). Suddenly fiction was fact. And THEN, a few yrs after that, a 20 ft tall raptor was found--think that one was dubbed Megaraptor. Pretty sure it was written abt in the National Geographic.

I was 8 and my cousin brought me to the movie (the first time... I saw the thing 11 more times in its first run by begging every family member to bring me once). She actually left the theater in the opening scene to use the bathroom so I got to watch that "alone." I was fine at 8, but distinctly remember it being my first unsupervised traumatic movie death.

I remember they had to warn parents on the news that small children might find this frightening because so many of the trailers were kid friendly and some parents didn’t know this wasn’t ET. The earlier trailers had a vibe of wonder and awe. The the other trailers showing the terror came out later.

Scientists have explained that they cannot extract DNA from the blood as it's been too long since it was sucked out of the dinoaurs but they are creating their own types of dinosaurs, they just aren't allowed to hatch them. They've modified a chicken to have dino-like features.

I laughed when he said "there's no CG in this" because this was one of the first movies to use CGI. Although the CGI in Jurassic Park is all in the dinosaurs, not the helicopter landing at the island. At the time of Jurassic Park's release, it had the most CGI of any movie.

Steven Spielberg actually used the the revolutionary mix of CGI and practical effects/animatronics for the dinosaur scenes. So, the close ups of the dinos and actual physical interaction was done real life (the sick triceratops) and long range/full body shots were CGI (the flock of dinos being eaten by Rex).

The CGI was really great in this movie. You can't tell the difference between an animatronic T-rex breaking the window in the kid's car and a CGI T-rex tearing into the tires of a CGI jeep.

This is still one of the best movies ever made, imo. My mom wouldnt let me see it in theaters when it came out (I was 5) and I was so bummed. She went and came home white as a ghost lol. The practical and other effects were groundbreaking. No one had seen its like in the past. I can watch this movie every day and never get tired of it. Although as an adult, it makes me laugh watching the scene where they feed the raptors with the cow. Imagine getting to set and them telling you "right, so we need you to stare at these stage hands violently shaking plants and look disgusted." I've seen so many people start off this series for the first time and say the same thing you did at the beginning: "why haven't scientists done this yet, cloning dinosaurs?" and I always just think "wait until you've finished the movie." lol. There's 5 movies, 2 books, and one animated netflix series on why it's such a bad idea. Ian Malcom was definitely my favorite character.

Google Jack Horner and the Chickensaurus. He started out trying to adjust chicken DNA so that they hatched into dinosaurs. They got chickens with teeth and snouts, but I believe the project was abandoned before they got anything close to the real thing.

Not true actually… did some research on this fact and the t-Rex did go down too far, but this only caused a tooth to break on the T-rex. It was clarified that the glass was always supposed to come down. The kids are just great actors!

The problem with old DNA is that it has a half-life. Even perfectly preserved, the molecular bonds will degrade over time from quantum mechanical effects. So past a certain age old can’t be cloned. This story gets around that by saying they fill the gaps with frog DNA (which is why the parks dinos aren’t actually real dinosaurs but technically brand new -invasive- species) but in real life the difficulty of knowing what parts of the code are degraded and missing and which chunks of frog code would work to replace them and end up in a living, functional, healthy animal would be extreme. With AI and machine learning, that can be speed up, but still past a certain age of the sample there just wouldn’t be enough DNA information to work with. After about 1 million years any remaining code would be mostly degraded gibberish and the dinosaurs we know and love went extinct 65 million years ago.

Some of them went extinct before that. Everybody always thinks of the Cretaceous dinosaurs but there were so many awesome dinosaurs and other creatures in the other Mesozoic periods, and awesome creatures in the earlier eras as well.

It's tough to pretty much impossible to really grasp just how much time actually went by since the dinosaurs faced their last wave of extinction, on top of that it's hard to really understand just how much longer they existed and long ago some species died out. Just mindblowing time frames really, far beyond our understanding let alone what DNA could withstand.

There is CGI but it is so well done that you don't notice it and even when it is a giant brachiosaurus, you don't say that's good CGI, you say that's a freakin' dinosaur. This movie understood how to make CGI subtle and keep you in the story. Also, this movie pioneered a lot of CGI.

T-Rex's vision being poor and "movement-based" was an invention of the book/movie. Examining a T-Rex's eye sockets on its skull reveals it to have had enormous, forward-facing eyes similar to those of a modern bird of prey. In all likelihood, it had better eyesight than any other living animal of its time.

I was 9 when this movie came out and I saw it in theaters. The bass of the speakers made the slow footsteps of the T-rex shake the whole theater. Closer and closer, louder and louder the chairs shook more and more. It was the most terrifying, exhilarating, fun theater experience of my life.

This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Everything about it holds up and stands the test of time, it's so well done. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've seen this movie over 500 times. When the movie first came out on tape, I watched it every single morning while I got ready for school, for a year and a half. I wore out the VHS tape and had to get another one. It was the first movie I ever got on DVD... and we still watch it all the time.

(edited to make more sense) According to latest research (this movie is almost 30 years old now) the idea that T-Rex vision is based on movement is not a thing and it actually had really good eyesight up to 6 km (3.72 miles). In fact, simulations of T-Rex bone structure suggest it couldn't even run for long periods of time or else it would break its own femurs due to all the weight they carried. The Velociraptors in the movie are most likely Utah Raptors or Deinonychuses or a combination of some sort because actual velociraptors were more the size of modern-day turkeys (which makes that kid's comment all the funnier to me).

Fun Facts about Jurassic Park 1: - The highest-grossing film of all time from its release until Titanic (1998) - Remained the 2nd highest-grossing film of all time from 1998 to 2003 (Lord of the Rings) - Remained the 3rd highest-grossing film of all time from 2003 to 2006 (Pirates of the Caribbean) - The fans gave the T-Rex a name: Rexie - The scene where the T-Rex attacks the car with the kids and the glass between them was not scripted: the head went through the top of the car so the kids reactions are real!

it's really interesting that back in the 90's when this movie was made, it was controversial to connect birds to dinosaurs. They took a bunch of risks that turned out to be scientifically accurate! Also, that T-Rex isn't vfx. that's a legitimate giant robot. which would MOVE ON ITS OWN when the electrical work got wet! hecking terrifying!

Correction! The connection between birds and dinosaurs has been known literally since Darwin wrote The Origin of Species. He predicted that a transitional fossil would be found that bridged the 'gap' between theropod arms and bird wings, and that would be but one part in validating his theory. Such a fossil was found just two years later. Darwin was validated within his lifetime. You can learn more by watching a few of the many videos by AronRa here on youtube.

The fact that Spielberg directed "Jurassic Park" while making "Schindler's List" is a testament to his creativity and genius. He also teamed with one of my favorite composers John Williams one again for the main score which they worked together for the main score for Spielberg's 1975 "Jaws" film. Williams also composed the score for "Star Wars" which is all 3 movies have a similar unassuming jovial sound despite the thilling and menacing nature of the action. Great reaction ❤

I love dinosaurs so I was so excited when this came out way back when. As a young girl and also a huge animal lover I was also really sad about the cow, lol. (That scene just came up as I'm typing). Also fun fact, it's said that when Laura Dern was running out of that building in fear, being chased by that dinosaur.. it was actual fear because the things were so life-like.

My brother got this on vhs for Christmas back in 1993, and my parents were discussing if I was allowed to watch it ( I was 9, almost 10) because they had heard that a person got eaten in it. We watched it all together during Christmas. Now it’s on my top 3 list of movies.

Michael Crichton and Steven Spielberg created an awesome story and movie in Jurassic Park. For every scene, I can hear the music in my head so it's not missed in the KZbin edit. I enjoy the two sequels and suggest watching them. They are not quite as good as the original but not as bad as people say. I've seen them all multiple times. Now, the newest Jurassic World ones, I've seen once, and don't plan to watch again.

The "dont you mean extinct?" line actually came from Phil Tippett, who was leading the team creating the dinosaurs for the films. Early in production, the plan was to use go motion, an updated version of stop motion effects (like Jason and the Argonauts) for the wide shots, with limited CGI. The CGI team created test footage of dinosaurs. Spielberg showed him the footage and asked what he thought - he said "I think I'm extinct"

Facts we know for certain about the T-Rex: -It's vision is definitely NOT based on movement. -It definitely had feathers. -It definitely didn't have feathers. -It definitely might have had feathers, but definitely not all over its body as skin impressions have been found showing scales. -It was definitely a scavenger, only capable of walking at slow speeds lest it break its legs under its weight. -It was definitely a predator which was incredibly agile and capable of speeds in excess of 45 mph/70kph.

Fun fact: the storm footage at the coast is an actual storm that blew in while they were shooting the movie. When everyone else in the town was taking shelter, the production team saw it as a golden opportunity and rushed out to capture storm footage in dangerous conditions. Because the people who made this movie were mad geniuses. This movie also essentially created the CGI industry. Originally the dinosaurs in the movie where going to combine practical effects and stop-motion animation. But a couple of guys in the special effects team were convinced they could do it better in a computer. Their boss told them not to and didn't kick the idea upstairs, so they just deliberately left a monitor with their CGI t-rex running when one of the producers came down to tour the studio. When she saw it, she immediately brought it to Speilberg and cinema was changed forever. And yes, a t-rex couple probably hear. Birds can hear, and their ears work much the same way ours do. Which probably means that ears were already present in the common ancestor between archosaurs and mammals. Another fun fact: Velociraptors were only about the size of a turkey. The movie (and the book the movie is based on) essentially took a deinonychus and called it a velociraptor - perhaps because velociraptor sounds cooler. The dilophosaurus, meanwhile, which is portrayed in the movie as being small was actually massive. About the size of a grizzly bear.

In the novel the park ranger Muldoon also realized the hard way how smart the Raptors were however he survives and escapes the island. In the movie he realizes they were able to flank their prey right before he dies, which is more compelling. I definitely recommend reading the Michael Crichton book. These characters are all more fleshed out throughout as well as the science which is meticulously well researched. Also John Hammond is a greedy corporate bastard in the original story, more of a realistic contrast to Richard Attenborough's grandfatherly Walt Disney-esque portrayal.

You need to watch Apocalypto (2006)......one of the most underrated films of the 2000s. It's brutal, epic and very engaging. I believe it's on par with The Departed ,a critically acclaimed film that came out the same year it did. Hope you consider this one as it's great🙏

So that kitchen scene and the long grass scen from the next movie still give me nightmares on occasion. The objects in mirror are closet than they appear shot is a great shot. I actually like the next one better. There's arguably scenes even more iconic than in this one. Though to be clear both are A+++. I think JP3 is like B-/C+ grade. And Jurassic would are in the B/B- range

I think lost world is a fantastic sequel. Now as a kid being a T-Rex fanboy, the San Diego stuff was amazing to me. As an adult I feel like it was rushed and felt like a different movie almost. It's not that I don't enjoy it, I do. But it was definitely out of place. I thought the majority of the stuff on Isla sorna was a fantastic follow-up to Jurassic Park it was darker and grittier and showed us more dinosaurs and if Jurassic Park is a 10 to me I would have rated lost world right around the nine range. But I really would have liked to see the last bit done better. There were potholes, and cheesy aspects, but overall I thought it was a fantastic sequel. I can't stand Jurassic Park 3. I usually watch Jurassic Park around 50 times a year and lost world pretty close to that but I haven't watched Jurassic Park 3 in like 3 years. If I never see it again I won't mind. Jurassic world was entertaining and although there were plenty of issues, it was a fun movie. I preferred fallen Kingdom to Jurassic world but I enjoyed both immensely. Hopefully Dominion will be better than both but we'll see

You are the first reactor that I have seen that has caught the eggs scene and mentioned that they are all females. Also, this is one of the best films for CGI according to a lot of VFX artists, they used a combination of animatronics and CGI.

I can still remember the first time I saw this (in the theatre the weekend it opened). So intense, especially for back then. Large Screen, surround stereo sound. The entire theatre fell silent when we first heard the T-Rex footstep and then everyone jumped a foot when he roared.

I remember when I was younger I used to go to a movie theater and they had scenes from various movies framed and on the wall. The shot of the T-Rex with the Jurassic Park banner was one of them. It’s always been etched in my brain ever since I was a kid. I was two when this movie came out, and my parents took me to see it at a drive-in theater, and I LOVED it! I wasn't scared at all, and when we bought it on VHS, I learned how to work it by myself so that I could watch the T-Rex scenes over and over.

The whole "vision based on movement" is good for a Hollywood thriller but in real life is pretty stupid for an apex predator. Most prey animals' first instinct when sensing danger is to freeze and hope they weren't noticed yet, and survival of the fittest would patch that pretty quickly for a predator. In fact most scientists nowadays agree that Tyrannosaurus probably had excellent vision like a hawk and a good sense of smell, although their hearing likely wasn't as well developed as modern birds. The later movies try explaining the whole thing off by saying that the frog DNA messed with their genes. I know I'm nitpicking, it's just the one thing that really gets under my skin in this otherwise perfect movie.

Considering frogs in real life don't perceive prey very well, unless they move, one could now argue it was actually a side-effect of the frog DNA, rather than their natural counterparts having actually had that vision weakness.

This same commentary appears in the second novel, Lost World. One of Dodgeson's goons tries to steal eggs from the Rex nest and freezes, Rex just eats him anyway. Malcom is like, as the king of commentary himself, bet he read one of those old research papers claiming Rex vision is based on movement XD.

@@moviemaestro800 and it works in the novel because they explain that that's why it potentially could be, and then the Lost world novel they say that it was just a grave mistake and in reality the T-Rex had already eaten. But the issue with the movie is that Grant mentions this already at the dig site. As if it was something that happened in the original dinosaurs world and wouldn't therefore be a side effect of the frog dna. Had he not mentioned that at the dig site it would have been fine but that was definitely not a good choice. Even if the T-Rex couldn't see, being that close it could definitely smell. That whole don't see you if you don't move thing was a horrible idea. Now bear in mind this is my favorite movie of all time and I'm not looking to watch documentary so it really doesn't bother me that much but that would definitely be one of my biggest gripes if I had to pick one

Even if they couldn't see, T-rexes had one of the largest nasal cavity to brain ratios on the planet, just behind a turkey vulture. Maybe she couldn't see them, but she KNEW they were there from miles away! But, yeah, Michael Crichton explained in the second (third?) novel that the t-rex had just eaten a goat and half a lawyer and probably wasn't hungry. Maybe she was just playing with them?

The things that get under MY skin are also T-rex related....the spolier-free consensus in the next movie is "Actually, they have the best sense of smell ever." so why didn't Rexy smell Dr. Grant when his head was stuffed up her right nostril? Also, if you're an apex predator whose top speed is 32 mph, which means you're more than likely an ambush hunter, why in gods name would you go around yelling all the freakin time? I get the triumphant roar over a successful kill, but shrieking at the prey animals you desire to eat does not seem like a very good hunting strategy to me. ("HELLO. I AM ANNOUNCING MY PRESENCE AND INTENT TO EAT YOU. DO NOT IMMEDIATELY RUN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTIO-WHERE ARE YOU GOING? COME BACK!") That's assuming they didn't already hear you noisily clomping towards them.

T-Rex was not an Apex predator it was an Apex Scavenger, it didn't need good eyesight or grappling arms because it had ultra sensitive smell and out-massed most hunters, imagine a hippo chasing lions away from a kill. It did not have to hunt or chase, it just dominated any dead carcass before the predators could finish eating it.

Samuel L. Jackson's character didn't make it because he was too busy holding onto his butt. Fun fact: Deep Blue Sea is basically the exact same plot as Jurassic Park except with sharks. We actually called it "Jurassic Shark" when it came out. It also stars Samuel L. Jackson as the exact same character! Not literally, but he's once again the systems director and at one point needs to reboot the system. Three of us in the theatres watching it all said "Hold on to your butt" at the exact same time. It was hilarious!

The dinosaur sounds in this movie were made by combining sounds made by living animals and every day objects. The Tyrannosaurus rex (known by fans as Rexy) was a mix of elephant calf vocalizations (roar, snarls and growls), lion sounds and a dog playing with a rope toy (shaking the Gallimimus to death). The Dilophosaurus was a mix of hawk, swan, howler monkey and rattlesnake sounds. The adult Raptors were a mix of a walrus's chest cavity roar and a male dolphin's mating scream recorded with a hydrophone, while the hatchling was a mix of owlet and fox kit sounds. The Brachiosaurus vocalizations were slowed down donkey calls, while the sneeze was a mix of an active fire hydrant and a whale breathing through its blowhole(s). The Gallimimus's chief sound effect was made using the recorded calls of a mare (female horse) in heat. And yes, that Raptor popping up right behind Ellie is always a major jumpscare...especially for me with my autism and anxiety. And most of this movie was filmed on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Yes, T-Rex could hear, and smell, and see just fine. The movement-based vision is something the filmmakers just made up for the movie. T-Rex had huge eyeballs, so it's likely they actually had excellent vision.

Jurassic Park is hands down my favorite movie of all time and i've watched it hundreds of times throughout my life so much so I could probably recite it from memory but even with all of that the first T. rex scene still gives me the chills I don't know if I should be terrified in awe or both 😳😂 Fun fact this was what made my love of dinosaurs and finding out my favorite dinosaur is T.rex come to fruition ❤️ Such an amazing movie even decades later. Also FYI as of right now because paleontology is always changing as we find new things T.Rex had the strongest bite force, best eye sight, and best smell of any animal that's ever lived. They hunted and scavenged but the paleontologist that was on for this movie genuinely has a weird hatred for T.rex (not sure why because T.rex sadly went extinct millions of years ago well before he was even born so unless he's millions of years old and had a negative personal interaction his hatred of T.rex makes zero sense) and was dead set on believing that T.rex was solely a scavenger and made it his lifes mission to tarnish T.rex (you can especially see this in the dumpster fire that is Jurassic Park III where he has spinosaurus somehow escape the jaws of an animal that had the strongest bite force that in real life would've instantly killed it and then somehow with it's weak bite force with teeth made more for catching fish then crushing like T.rex was able to snap T.rex's neck despite it being really big and thick almost like a bull neck and kill it basically trying to take T.rex's 'king of the dinosaurs' title). Personally wether an animal is still living or sadly extinct they all deserve respect, insane appreciation, and don't deserve to be compared to one another let alone bashed just because you have some weird hatred of an animal that passed away millions of years ago so I just wanted to throw those facts in there because it bothers me that his B.S is still being pushed/believed. Glad you loved the movie though 😊

Fun fact due to the Water the animatronic for the T-rex water logged causing it to move and do things randomly on its own. the scene in which it breaks the top window ( skylight ) and they have to brace with arms and legs actually wasnt suppose to happen the material used broke under the weight of the animatronic. 23:21 - 23:28 ( i mean the window its self breaking towards the feet. The skylight coming in was suppose to happen but still horrifying. )

Little bit of trivia I suppose, the T Rex had possibly the best sight out of any living thing to ever exist on out planet because it had binocular vision. It also could absolutely hear, it had incredible hearing and pressure senses in the bottom of its feet which would help it detect vibrations and sounds giving it perfect sight for seeing something dead straight up to 2 miles away. And to top it off it also has the strongest bite force out of any living creature to ever exist

The original ending for this film had Dr. Grant shooting the velociraptors and the dinosaur fossils crashing down on them. But they wanted a bigger and more exciting ending and to bring back the T-Rex one more time. So Spielberg talked to the production designer about that and thought "well how does the T-Rex get in the building"? Steven said that the T-Rex would come in from the top of the frame, even tho it doesn't make sense how it got in the building. The banner "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" falling was used as an irony

This movie was so huge in popularity, back in the 90s, that the Toronto Raptors NBA team name was voted on by fans in a public poll. No, Hammond (Richard Attenborough) said he WAS funding them at $50,000, but he didn't say he was the ONLY funder. They probably, like most digs, have at least a few people or a few organizations funding the digs. However, when he made them the offer to go visit the park, he OFFERED to FULLY FUND them for 3 years, so they probably got a lot more money to do their stuff, but just from other sources. He wanted their FULL focus, so he was willing to pay for that right.

There's a neat little easter egg when the T-Rex breaks the glass roof of the tour car. One of its teeth breaks off, and in JP lore, it's said that this tooth later became infected, which caused the T-Rex to be badly malnourished when Masrani re-captured it for Jurassic World.
