They may have only made two decent albums (Electric Warrior & The Slider) but from 1970 to 1973 they put out 10 maybe 11 singles in a row that can all be called classics. 9 of those 11 are in my 10. So no surprises here. The quality of T-Rex is that even though they peaked for such a brief period they easily hold their own with bands with much more breadth in their catalogs. There is nothing wrong with having a limited palette when it is this good! I have never felt more in tune with the TLM top 10s, many of those deeper cuts were HMs for me. Even Roger Daltry wanted to drink himself blind to the sound of old T-Rex. The legend and influence certainly outway their success commercially. Outside of the British Isles, it is wild how limited their commercial impact was. Even my native New Zealand, which has a grand tradition of championing odd-ball musicians didn't really embrace them. And the US took Get It On to its heart but wouldn't look any further. 1. Metal Guru 2. Ride A White Swan 3. Children of The Revolution 4. Solid Gold, Easy Action 5. The Slider 6. Jeepster 7. 20th Century Boy 8. Hot Love 9. Get It On (Bang A Gong) 10. Telegram Sam

I'm pretty much working off the same page as you. I'm an American who grew up only hearing "Get It On" and didn't investigate the band further until I was an adult. Albums-wise, T-Rex doesn't blow me away, but I think their top dozen songs are about as great as anyone's top dozen.

My memory of T Rex in NZ is different, I was 13 years old in 1972 and I NEVER shared any musical tastes with the other girls of my age...except for the T Rex singles. Your list covers them completely. Also, T Rex appeared regularly on Top of the Pops that was broadcasted in irregular order and with sometimes significant delay from the UK dates (and at odd hours) so they were one of the few artists we could see, even if they just mimicked to playback.

He's got so many great songs like 'Rabbit Fighter"; and on the big singles "Telegram Sam", "Metal Guru", "Children of Revolution" and "20th Century Boy" they got that huge sound down so well. The violas, the BU voices, the super dry snare. But my favorite cuts are probably "Raw Ramp" with the great intro "Jewel" "Beltane Walk" "Life's a Gas" - he comes close to the great ones here "Explosive Mouth" "Sitting Here" "Life's An Elevator" with that CRAZY note that resolves the chorus I know that sound that J is talking about on 'Slider'. Marc got his name from Dylan. Bo for Bob and Lan for Dylan. Let it be known that polls and most on here think Slider is better than Electric W but I'm not feeling it. 1 to 5 scale. Bang a Gong (Get it On) 5 Jeepster 5 Mambo Sun 5 Planet Queen 5 Girl 5 (Seems to be ignored by most on here) 20th Century Boy 4.2 (Slider) 5 Life's a Gas 4.2 Cosmic Dancer 4.2 A critic of Slider wrote it "is full of songs of a slightness which is wondrous to behold". One never knows how Tony Visconti could screw up an album but this is murkier, repetitive, less dynamic and vital, more glam, less eerie (Mambo Sun is eerie), less hooky and it might succumb to Paul McCartney's Syndrome if Marc put his wife Gloria Jones on keyboards (I have no knowledge of this). Actually both records had different sound engineers - that aside from lesser songs could be the difference. Metal Guru 4 (Slider) would like to hear this with the engineer from EW Electric Slim and the Factory Hen 4 (Tanx) would like to hear this with the engineer from EW Monolith 4 (from EW) like to hear this with engineer from SLIDER Some songs could be less than 4.0: Children of the Revolution 4 would like to hear this with the engineer from EW Hot Love 4 would like to hear this with the engineer from EW Telegram Sam 4 ditto Light of Love 4 ditto Slider - 4 ditto

Hey Oppo. Electric Warrior and Slider are both 5-star albums but I prefer Warrior and actually classify it as a "six star" album. Dolittle by Pixies is another six-star album. Slider is certainly meloncholy. Spaceball Ricochet is a beautiful song (not on my top 10 for whatever reason) and is probably Marc at his most pensive and autobiographical . . without the bravado. Good point about the engineers. Producers get all the credit (or blame) but what yer hearing is thanks to the engineer, right? It's like the director/cinematographer distinction . . I guess . .

@@NaughtyVampireGod Hi Vampire. Sure Doolittle is a great record. I don't mind the melancholy of Slider but the feelings and reasons I gave still stand on it. Spaceball has beauty and yearning and I like the sound production more than most on Slider so ya know the engineer takes five (went on break). Marc does a live version on tube and it is better I think. Thanks for stopping by.

I could go deep into this being a Bolan fan from the age of 14. Sunken Rags deserves a mention, Thunder Wing, a twisted Bolan transformed Rock n Roll glacial stomp; and Lady for simplistic beauty, By the Light of the Magical Moon for its haunting romanticism and otherworld guitaring. Broken Hearted Blues is my favourite, conjuring up Eraserhead imagery of sweet nightmares.

No "Thunderwing?" Love that one, but pretty much every song on your three lists is classic. I also love "Mister Mister." No other song in his canon like that one.

It's a shame that American radio only plays one stupid song by this band. Marc Bolan was an incredibly talented & influential artist. This is probably my favorite top 10 songs list thus far. Tall Dwarfs do a good Ride A White Swan and Ty Segall recorded a whole album of T Rex tunes. You can hear Bolan's influence in Segall's own music, so his adoration is not a big surprise.

The live Brett Anderson/Terence Trent D'Arby cover of "Children Of The Revolution" for French TV sticks with me. Placebo's "20th Century Boy" & Moz's "Cosmic Dancer" are pretty top notch as well.

I don't know for definite but I always assumed that Marc was sniffing on 'The Slider'... Gene Vincent utilized breathing and sniffing on songs like 'Woman Love' to great effect, it was always my assumption that the likes of Bolan & The Beatles, notably on 'This Boy' was throw back or homage to Gene... Maybe others did it too...
@bobsmith32172 жыл бұрын
"The Slider" has an almost prayerful quality. I imagine Marc Bolan walking out to the front edge of the stage, with the lights slightly dimmed, and singing this song in a trance-like manner. (Of course, not too many prayers include lines like "nailed a nose") I've had humorous thoughts about the basic rhyme scheme of "Telegram Sam." It's so simple, I can imagine T-Rex playing an epic-length version of it using verses from the audience. "Ladybug Jones, Ladybug Jones, she don't talk in person, she just likes to phone," and stuff like that. Also, this video takes you into the whole cultural swirl that surrounded this song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqaam5l6jspogqs This week reminds me that I need to pull out one of my favorite summer albums, Candy-O by The Cars. Its medium tempo grooves were probably influenced by the Classic Era T-Rex, especially "Dangerous Type."

Joe, I swear we sometimes share a brain 😉 20th Century is a good song so is Bang A Gong (Get It On). But Jeepster is my favorite by far. I was born in the seventies and, I've been going back to the music of that decade because it holds up well after all these years: The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Quen, The Cars, Badfinger, The Doobie Brothers is some of what I like and listen to. I also agree w/your assessment of Jeepster. It's the delivery as well as the cute and coy lyrics that sell the song. I don't think anyone else could sell it the way he does. It reminds me of Need You Tonight. I like the song but it's not my favorite INXS song. It's Michael Hutchence's delivery that makes it worth the listen. Anyone else and it would sound pretty lame.
