The benefit to charging is if you see an enemy and pre charge it fires faster than just hitting fire and waiting for it to charge itself. Basically it has a 1.5 second trigger pull but if you charge it, it will fire in .5 seconds.

Additional tip. If you don't want your Raptors or wolves to die. Find some meat by killing chickens and boars then place it in front of them. It'll heal them larger than the slurp plant does.
