Me and my partner play this with a variation were you dont have to play the drawn tile and can store it for yourselve at the penality of missing your turn. This opens up playing more favourable tiles later which results in higher scores and a more visually pleasing board which are both fun. Also we do trading of tiles if agreed by both players

I spy 'the bridges of shangri la' in the back, One of my favourite games, I hope you'll cover it some day! That one really needs more exposure, It's pure brilliance.

It's been requested, and I fully intend to. 🙂 Need to get it played more first!

Great work on your channel. I am not sure if you noted this but there is a reason they tell you to take the tiles out and make a cube which is that you can see any tiles that have the little "bump" on the back side. These tiles have connections out of 3 of the 4 edges of tiles (rather than 2 as the majority do). Of course you can still use the bag but be aware that saying "feel around and decide if you want a 3 exit or 2 exit tile also risks that you can feel the grooves on the tiles, either accidentally or on purpose.

Yup, aware of the cube. Probably important if you're playing competitively, but seems like a big hassle otherwise.

@@BoardGems oh I totally agree with you, and you can anyway still "feel around" for a bumpy tile if you want. Game didn't work for me but I enjoy your channel and perspectives, especially the focus on older, classic games from a simpler time.

My group uses a second bag for the "target" tiles. It simplifies things a bit.

Looks fun, I'll have to be on the lookout for a copy! I just happened to play twixt today, another east/west abstract, a bit of an odd coincidence.

20:05 At the exception that in the Kosmos edition, some of the tiles have their exits off and so when you place tiles perfectly aligned on the board, the exits don't match. Very frustrating visually.

Very nice! I have the original edition. The red "lava" edition is too much visually. We play almost exclusively 4-player and do build the cube. Everyone always seems to want the marked tiles. Handling the tiles is nicely tactile, like playing with Mah Jong tiles. It looks good on the table and thus is effective at drawing in non-gamers, especially as the rules are simple as well.

23:00 Thank you for the video. May I ask what year is the Goliath edition with the pattern mistake, please? Thx.

The version pictured is this one, according to BGG: boardgamegeek.com/boardgameversion/30904/goliath-multilingual-edition-2009 I don't know if they fixed it in later printings. FWIW the game still works, it's just a lack of perfection once you know about it.😔

I got both the 1999 and 2012 edition (the one with the two warriors on the outside) now 🙂

Nice! Curious to hear your preference. And also whether my comparison vid came up short in some way in helping you choose one over the other. 🙂

I've got the original game, what are some of the other games in this series you mentioned in that family of games that you mentioned? I have the original as well.
@BoardGems2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't seem to be a recognized "series", but other games that have the Spiele-Galerie mark include Giganten, Dos Rios, La Città, MarraCash, The Bridges of Shangri-La and The Pillars of the Earth. Some really great, notable games in there - many of which I hope to cover for the channel!

Instead of using up 27 minutes, about 3 would have sufficed to say that this game is heavily luck dependent, (and that's the way you prefer it) and drags at the end, as your own play through unmercifully indicates.... As you correctly state, the 3 player version isn't good and the 4 player version is merely 2 against 2 which can also be done in any 2 player abstract. It's hard to see what makes this a "gem"?? Yes, the box is nice, and a 7 or 8 year old can play it with a grand parent or better yet great grand parent:-)
