A.R. Rahman’s work on the “Taal” soundtrack is more than just music-it’s a powerful testament to the idea that art knows no boundaries, cultural or otherwise. As a white lad growing up surrounded by Western music, the experience of listening to “Taal” was nothing short of revelatory. It was like discovering a new language that, despite being foreign, felt instantly familiar and deeply resonant. The Western world has had its share of transformative musical moments-The Beatles’ British Invasion being one of the most iconic. The Beatles didn’t just bring British rock and roll to America; they fused various musical influences, from blues and country to Indian classical music, creating something entirely new. This blending of styles broke down cultural barriers and united people across the globe through a shared love of music. When I first listened to “Taal,” I felt something similar. Rahman’s compositions are a masterful blend of traditional Indian music and Western elements. Tracks like “Taal Se Taal Mila” and “Ishq Bina” mix classical Indian instruments with contemporary beats, creating a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly new. As someone accustomed to Western music, the rhythms and melodies in “Taal” were an exciting departure from the norm-yet, they still struck a deep chord within me. This fusion didn’t just create beautiful music; it built bridges between cultures. In a world that often feels divided by differences, “Taal” was a reminder of how art can bring us together. Rahman didn’t just borrow from Western music; he wove it into the fabric of Indian sounds, creating a musical tapestry that transcended cultural boundaries. Listening to “Taal” as a Westerner, I didn’t feel like an outsider looking in; instead, I felt like I was part of something larger-an experience that united listeners from different backgrounds through a shared appreciation of beauty and emotion. The music didn’t highlight our differences; it celebrated our common humanity. This kind of cultural blending, where the best elements of different traditions come together to create something entirely new, is rare. Just as The Beatles’ music broke down cultural barriers and created a global phenomenon, Rahman’s “Taal” did something similar. It showed that music could be a unifying force, capable of bringing together diverse audiences and creating something that resonates universally. For me, “Taal” wasn’t just an introduction to Indian music-it was a realization that music has the power to unite, to create understanding, and to build connections where there were none before. In a time when the world can feel increasingly divided, the experience of listening to “Taal” stands as a powerful reminder of the beauty that comes from blending cultures and the profound impact it can have on our lives.

I am listening to the entire album at once for the first time in YEARS! Oh MY GOD! The impact is so freaking POWERFUL! What a masterpiece of album by my musical legend A R Rahman Sir....still remember buying the audio cassette of this movie in July or Aug 1999....Each of the songs outdo the other in terms of quality....after so many years, tried listening the cassette on my old tape recorder, though the audio was out of place due to the age of the cassette, the magic the album creates is still in tact...As a 12 year old, the songs blew me away when it first released....ARR Sir must have had a blast recording all the songs of the album...this album will never grow old with time as its striking quality is the blend of Indian & Western Classical in the correct proportion....Am proud to live in the era where celebration of music existed in the form of AR Rahman Sir....No other can pull off such a hard hitting album with sheer variety & maintaining its ethnicity in tact...

In 90s, A.R was way ahead of other composers of that time. Similarly, in 2000s, his work was much better than the new composers. And in this decade, he is still on the top. It must be noted that most of music directors of 90s couldn't survive in 2000s. Similarly composers of 2000s found it difficult to work in this decade. One thing is clear that A.R's music is independent of time.✌

Song Writer then composer Then singers everyone one made this beautiful, cheerful awesome music. Bollywood must keep competition of writing such Songs so that they would find best lyrics. Otherwise we ll forget music, we ll only listen fast words, sentences and raps.

Subhradeep Biswas you are undervaluing efforts of earlier music directors. A R Rehman is not doubt one of greatest music composer of this time but we also have had SD Burman and RD Burman creating musical miracles in the golden era of Indian Music when technology was not much available.
