I shared this with my team at work, who are struggling with trying to learn and execute all at once, too fast. They are very literal-minded, so I think they thought I was just sharing a tabla video, but I hope at least a few understood the lesson.

Very great and practical advice. Beginners should not run after speed. Very well said that - table/dholak is linguistic.

That's true, but it's necessary to play fast as well, because in slow tempo you won't use the technique you can go fast with.

You obviously didn't hear the whole video

@@Bigpoppaabe8 And you obviously don't play Tabla, because it's an instrument of all speeds. I've also just quoted the guitar-player of Archspire, one of the fastest bands in the world. Even the maestros play at speeds they can't play precise any more and I only know Yashwant Vaishnav who sounds almost as clear in 0.5 speed than in full tempo, but he's a robot. And tabla-beginners won't learn the right technique to go fast anyway and will find out while trying. But there are certainly habits you won't want to develop like wrong timing. Clarity can be improved with practice and advanced techniques, a bad timing is a habit you probably won't get rid off. Better play with music as a metronom and record yourself to check how it really sounds.

Truth!!! I’ve always recoiled from students striving for speed! Thank you for verbalising this and I hope students take your words to heart!
