Thank you so very much for continuing to make this lovely and unique Subbuteo program for us - there is nothing else like it, and it single-handedly brought Subbuteo into my life! It may be a slog, I hear that, but it is - for so many people, myself included - such a vast joy. Your slog benefits and helps multitudes - it definitely raises my spirits. Thank you, Keith, for keeping this wonderment going. This matters. Especially, during such a difficult time.

Most entertaining - thank you! I hadn't realised the link between the League Cup and Floodlights - Subbuteo were very much ahead of the curve there - not only introducing Floodlights but also the OO Scale (or as they called it 'Continental') equipment in 1961. Peter Adolph must have been aware of the rollout of floodlights and jumped on it as a sales opportunity - a very shrewd man! The very first OO Scale set was the Continental Floodlighting Edition in 1961/62 which featured Original Heavyweight figures (which were launched before the moulded 'Walkers').

Another great programme Keith. The Subbuteo floodlights are probably the biggest anti-climax item in the history of the world..... I remember badgering my parents to get me them as they are a "much needed item". I recall my dad threading the wire through the white girder like assembly and setting up the plug like switch gear. Then........the biggest disappointment ever. Table set up, teams on the pitch, floodlights on. Turn out the lights and......where is everything!!!. 11th century monks had more light from a single tallow candle and created some of the finest illustrated manuscripts. I couldn`t even see the halfway line......let alone create a flowing move. Still, they are iconic and an instantly recognisable piece of Subbuteo history. I like to think of Peter Adolph (ever the enterprising businessman) contacting Alan Hardaker asking if he can help him shift several thousand model floodlights. So Hardaker came up with the league cup!! Keep up the good work

I didn't bother with floodlights. During the power cuts of the early 1970's I used four candles (no connection to the comedy sketch) to make it easier to play when it was dark. It wasn't a perfect solution but it was cheaper than the official floodlights and gave off almost as much light with the added bonus of burn marks on your arms

I have to say it again- this just keeps getting better! For fun I watched the first one (July 2019) again straight after. Loved the introductory montage and floodlights feature. Bit surprised, in hindsight, that David Hunter’s upgrade of the 70s Subbuteo lights didn’t get a mention but loving my Ideaworks lights so no biggy! That first show also reminded me of the games of yesteryear section you used to run. I would still love to see the Leeds/Southampton game re-enacted; although how you do a Subbuteo rabina is beyond me. Or the double-hat-trick that I remember George Best scoring against Northampton in the Cup; maybe that would be better with 4-2-4 as I think one was a cheeky little chip?
@ROWZED223 жыл бұрын
Excellent show as ever. Never owned Subbuteo floodlights. Totally impractical. Too tall. Used 'Striker' lights - ideal for solo play - as you didn't catch them with your elbows. TippKick have provided a modern day alternative. Not using rechargeable batteries, floodlit games are still an occasional, expensive 'treat'!

I just love your shows Keith, the content is always brilliant and the production spot on. I remember when I was a young lad I got a Peter Shilton goalkeeping game. I'm guessing it was around the mid-1970's. I've searched online but to no avail. Do you remember it? Or have i been dreaming!!??
@peterharrison33183 жыл бұрын
@Ads n Hi, no it wasn't a board game, it was actually a figure of Shilts and a big goal - probably about 6 inches high. I reckon i must have got it for my 7th or 8th birthday - so sadly in the last 47 years I've forgotten much of the detail! Hadn't realised that Keith had given up on the videos because of the ads ... I'm gutted to hear that because this really is my favourite channel on YT! :(

My space issue was solved by using the slightly smaller pitch that comes in one of the Champions League sets, 132cm x 86cm. Unfortunately it’s one of the later pitches that are see through and it stretches. However new kids on the block “Subbuteo Asylum” supply standard and half size pitches and a custom made offering. I’ve given them the details of what I want and look forward to it arriving. If the pitch matches up to the help given by Gary to design it the result should be good.

I have been using a set of Subbuteostadium floodlights for the past couple of years, and they are every bit as good as Keith says in this video. The only problem with them, as far as I can see, is that once the internal rechargeable batteries start to fail - as all batteries do sooner or later - they cannot be replaced as they are sealed inside the unit. And the particular LED heads used on these floodlights are no longer in production & cannot be obtained anywhere. This has posed a problem for me with at least one of my Subbuteostadium floodlights...it no longer stays on for the duration of one of my Subbuteo games before failing. So I have had to improvise a solution by connecting one of those small, rectangular external power packs people use to charge mobile phones, and this has solved the problem of insufficient duration, although it does spoil the look a bit, as it requires a USB cable to stay connected to the floodlight throughout the game...

I really appreciate the section on smaller pitches. This has been an absolute nightmare for me, but the dimensions of the modern starter set pitches would actually work on my table. I just loathe paying that much for what I already know is a low quality product when I can get much better quality vintage sets for far less.....but with pitches too large for American tables. What an insane dilemma.

If you're looking for a non-permanent layout that you can easily set up and take down quickly I'd look for a quality cloth pitch as Astros need a lot of care if you're constantly rolling and unrolling them. An original cotton Subbuteo pitch will do nicely from an Auction site (avoid the shiny, light green pitch). Many are under £ 20. Astrobase.eu have a lot of cotton pitches available and they are good quality. Postage and customs may slow down delivery a bit.

Still trying to get a Subbuteo collection off the ground!, eBay-people asking a fortune for boxes of broken& missing players, charity shops-only ever seen one (poor quality) set, Gumtree-same as eBay, Facebook-forget it. Gutted!, to think what I had years ago, around 30 HW teams, 20-30 lightweight/zombie teams, just about every accessory going, all mint condition, Subbuteo express, top scorer, pitch on board. Sold the lot, probably the thing I most regret parting with, alongside my Villa season ticket of course. Anyone have any good leads, let me know. I think everyone knows Subbuteo collectibility now. Good to see the game still out there though, greatest game I ever played, the memories!!

This is a great channel. Used to live in England in the late 70's and managed to get the stadium edition of Subbuteo. Still got it, but haven't played in years. So I'm curious and you don't really need to respond as I guess it's your business, but why are you offering your personal collection as prizes? I didn't enter as I didn't know the answer anyway, but when you stated any two teams out of your personal collection, I had to ask. Anyway, keep up the great video's they are alot of fun to watch and you've really given me some inspiration to maybe set mine up again. Cheers!!

Hi Paul. I needed to take a break. 25 plus hours of footage takes it's toll. Now KZbin is changing it's policy and will be placing Ads in all content, irrespective of Creators permission, it's maybe time to rethink. Google own the channel and can do as they wish but the inconsiderate, crowbarring of Ads irrespective of Editorial care is astonishingly arrogant, ignorant and lacking in any care for the Contributors creative efforts. These are guys who would scratch their initials into a Stradivarius with a penknife. Sad day.
