Table Mountain's mystery man: Joshua Penny

The official line about Table Mountain's Penny's Cave is that it's named after Joshua Penny. Penny was an American who was forcibly conscripted into the British Navy in the 18th Century. When his ship sailed into Table Bay in 1799, Penny escaped. For 14 months he hid away in a secret cave, he later wrote. But could this be true?
