Alisha Citadel (remnants of Alisha Mosque) (attributed to Tajuddin Alisha Jilani: Minister of Sultan Mohammad Khodabandeh and Sultan Abu Saeed Ilkhani) are the remains of the south porch of Alisha Mosque in Tabriz.
The construction of the first citadel dates back to the Ilkhanate period in the early eighth century AH, when a large unfinished building was built with the primary purpose of building a mosque. In the following years, using the walls left from the building of the first mosque, a military fort was built instead, which has been used for years as a military fort and the southern part of the city wall. The use of this building as a military fortress was evident especially during the Qajar period until the end of the autonomous government of Azerbaijan. During the reign of the Qajar dynasty, a military structure was completed with the addition of various attachments, including a cannon casting factory, a pergola mansion, and a barracks building. Parts added to the first walls were destroyed during the Pahlavi period, and parts were destroyed in the post-revolutionary period.
Today, only the south wall of the citadel remains, which is open to the public at certain times of the day. The area around the citadel underwent many changes in the decades after the revolution, which were considered for the construction of the mosque. A large mosque called the Great Mosque of Tabriz has been built around the citadel, which has threatened part of the citadel's visual space. This mosque is used in various government ceremonies and on Fridays to hold Friday prayers.
This work was registered as one of the national works of Iran on December 6, 1961 with the registration number 170.
