As amazing as the people's lives must have been who could afford such a luxurious home, I feel 100 times luckier to be alive during a time where at the click of a mouse I can learn about really amazing stuff, such as how they may have lived and enjoyed their time, and then with another click of the mouse learn something else really cool. That type of construction/floor plan which is out of style today is wonderful way to bring light in and keep the houses very cool in the hot summer days. Today we have opted for AC. But in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and every Latin American country there are houses with that layout and it is very effective in controlling outside temperature. They are also very private.

Yes, when I was recreating the spaces there were times when I just stopped and "walked" my character through it, looking at how the light would come through the compluvium, or wandering in the back garden. Something to keep in mind is that wooden and fabric furniture did not survive in Pompeii (very interestingly that some wood _survived_ in Herculaneum), so that’s a dynamic of the domicile more or less left to imagination. The only surviving clues of it being what was sometimes depicted in their paintings/frescos

cgi of house interiors,does anyone know whether the doorway transoms had glass mounted in the squares? my learning curve on this subject was jumpstarted when I apprenticed with a semi retired window repair guy in the 90s,among the materials he used was Nu putty,,mfgd in Des Plaines Il, now out of business,this putty was fine aggregate from offshore italian waters,,imported for use as a glazing cmpd,mixed with linseed and other oils,the stuff iif properly applied, dried only verry slowly,bonding well glass edges to the wooden rabbet,it formed a thin dried bead on top,a little soft but firm underneath,,wood sashes with this stuff lasted 40 to 80 years,long as the window survived slams and stones thrown, my bet is the romans used the same ior similar aggregate using various tree oils to seat glass pieces
@Stori3d_Past4 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent question. Window glass has been found, both at Pompeii and Herculaneum. (The British Museum has a Herculaneum window pane: www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/G_1772-0317-21) But it is very rare. I'm trying to look up studies about window glass and where it's been found, but it's been tough so far. I think they were capable of it, but culturally probably didn't use a lot of it by the time of the eruption. More a novelty than something integral to home life.

Excellent artistry to recreate what a Roman upper class lived in. Would this be called a "villa"? Why did the Romans eat lying down? Is that the way the common citizens ate too? Did the slaves often try to escape? Also, where did the owner of this villa take a bath, or wash themselves? What was the kitchen like?
