I have been making music for 20 years but I love it when I learn something new and useful!!!

I'm impressed that works with the macbook mic - i would have thought the clipping would occur in the macbook hardware before it was even captured to the file - worth noting that this isn't always as safe as you make it sound, if you clip a converter or distort an analog input it won't matter what bit depth you record at, the clipping/distortion is part of the source audio at that point

I always render at 32 bit. Useful bit of info regarding the dynamic range of that bit depth though. I had no idea it was that large. Regarding Krakatoa, that was in 1883 by the way. It did a lot more than shake ships. The tsunami caused by the eruption killed something like 40,000 people in an area covering a couple of hundred square miles. But I think you'll find the eruption of Tambora, in 1816, was quite a bit a larger than that even. Up to ten time larger in fact. Most volcanologists regard it as the largest eruption in human history. So it was most likely louder. The particulate matter ejected into the upper atmosphere was so great it even caused a volcanic winter for around a year or two, leading to reduced crops and consequent famine in large parts of the world. The year of 1816 is known as the year of no summer because of these mounumental effects. Interestingly, the reason why JMW Turner's paintings have such striking weather patterns in his landscapes, particularly sunrises and sunsets, is because of the effect this eruption had on the atmosphere for about a decade or so. It's also relevant to Mary Shelley writing Frankenstein, but I can't remember why:) Krakatoa get's all the props though, because it happened after the invention of the telegraph and the news of it's eruption spread more widely and quickly than Tambora. So it's more of a celebrity volcano. They even filmed a drama based around the eruption in the 50's. Haven't seen it for years, but from what I remember it's not very good As for it being the loudest sound experienced on earth, it depends on what you mean by experienced. The two eruptions cited were probably the largest in recorded history, to my knowledge. But when one counts eruptions prior to the advent of recorded human history things get even more phenomenally large. Seventy four thousand years ago, you had the Toba eruption which was about ten times more powerful that Tambora There's even a theory that it had an adverse effect on human genetic diversity. Because, like Tambora, it caused a volcanic winter but this one lasted up to a decade, with overall climate cooling that lasted for a millenia. It almost lead to our extinction. Only a few thousand people survived this event, worldwide, and as a consequence there is a lot less genetic diversity than on would expect for a species that has existed for two to three hundred thousand years. Damn thing almost wiped us out. The burning question is though: would the Toba eruption cause clipping if recorded at 32 bit ?

Oh, there you go with that "Unfathomably large number" line. All sounding like the original BBC radio play version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy. I love it. And i love this information as well.. for some crazy reason, i find my self using Bitwig to record the dialogue for these audio play productoons I'm working on (because of the clip launcher . I find it so much cleaner and easier to use tye clip launcher rather than comping. ADHD and Dylesxia...i need thinga right there) And man, let me tell you. I am LOUD. So I'm clipping every which way. I recently seitched to 32 bit float, but i still saw the clipping happening. But now i know the information is there, so i can drag the gain down and compress like my life depended on it

I suspect the only way this works for recording is if the soundcard is capturing 32bit float as well, right?
Жыл бұрын
*facepalm* Yes, and I've just realised that this makes this video useless if you don't have an interface/microphone capable of doing that. Zoom make the UAC-232, which is an interface that can record in 32-bit and there are various microphones, such as the RØDE NT1 (5th gen) or RØDE GO II that are basically unclippable, but you're right... If the Soundcard isn't 32-bit capable, this won't help at all haha

Still helps on export and bouncing, so still makes sense. Sadly I only have 24 bit sound capture devices currently.
@HOUSEARREST1 Жыл бұрын
@that’s most likely due to gain structure internally. There’s no such thing as a 32Bit converter. Most aren’t even 24Bit. And I’m taking high-end stuff. However aslong as you stay in the box / daw it’s pretty much impossible to clip channels in a 32Bit environment. The 32Bit tag on those devices is a sales pitch and has nothing to do with the range in which it’s able to operate.
@mudi2000a Жыл бұрын
@@HOUSEARREST1correct the “32 bit” sound cards actually have multiple (most have 2) signal paths at different levels which they they combine to 32 bit.

insightful video as always. you have some of the most solid and well put together videos out there and its mind boggling you havent blown up on here yet. Maybe thats because so much content is geared towards new producers or reactionary buzz word topics but you're a god send to the bitwig community

can you normalize when at 32 bit, and then convert back to 24 bit? if you want to have a 24 bit master or if 24 bit is required?

Thanks such a great tip for distortions, but i wonder when export a whole track at 32 bit wav , the file must be huge and would it sounds more refine as a 22 bit?

I would recommend still exporting a master at 24-bit but ensuring that you aren't clipping on the master bus.

Hi all.Can anyone recommend a video that explains all the features and settings in Bitwig? I don't mean all in Bitwig, obviously it's a lot.I mean basic settings for example: like: like automating tempo and tone when adding samples, loops, etc. And in the right window. What are these values and what do they mean. How to work with them? I'm just starting out, so if anyone knows, where else but in the documentation can I look it up? Not a 10 year old video:) Thanks for the video,now I understand what 24 and 32 bit is for.

I’m actually creating a course on this right now. It’s called Bitwig 101 and will be about everything you need to know to start producing.

I don't get why this actually works 🤔are there microphones that can record signals that are louder than 0db? i have a microphone with an interface that only supports 24 bit so does the interface internally have a higher bit-depth until it gets downsized to 24bits?
@mioszkarpowicz3012 Жыл бұрын
Does it work with any audio interface that way? Most of audio interfaces have 24 bit analog to digital converters. I will check..
@audiunt Жыл бұрын
Which audio interface will capture in 32 bits? Just asking for a friend 😉
@ywenp Жыл бұрын
Is the dynamic range you are talking about standardized? Because 32bits could also allow to record the exact same dynamic range than 24bits, just with a higher resolution (finer steps between two possible sample values). And until now I even believed that this was what 32bit audio was for (ie. not increase dynamic range but resolution).
@Fedor_Tkachev_Music Жыл бұрын
if your audio interface doesn't have 32-bit recording there's no point in recording audio in 32 bit on the daw side. Just set your level straight)
@McGyver008 Жыл бұрын
32 bit allows 192.659... dB, not 1000+... But of course you're right and using 32 bit allows to use much more headroom (192.659... instead of 144.494..., which is 48.164...dB more). How "happy" many of us were when being able to use 16 bit in the oast... (96.33... dB).
Жыл бұрын
Hmmm interesting! I just looked into the discrepancy and apparently it's because 32bit integer = 192dB and 32bit FLOAT = 1528dB.
@McGyver008 Жыл бұрын
@ Float - right. But... the number of digits your signal can distinguish is defined basically by the integer size... although - right - the dynamic maximum following the "singe precision 32 bit float" is higher... (does Bitwig studio use another definition...? Especially: Does it use a different definition of its exponent?), more exactly it is 776,657...dB

It is pointless. Do not do it. For the cost of extensively large files is not worth it. In this day and age we have Restoration plugins\apps which do a remarkable job of interpolating clipped signals thus restoring them. With that said if you are a bit "heavy handed" during mixing and want to play it on the safe side, definitely DO bounce your final mix to 32bit-float before sending it to Mastering stage.
