My relation to Daiwa is only that I know someone who works for a Distributor. I receive upon my request a form which allows me to order 6 rods or reels per season.
Keep in mind....making youtube videos is not a requirement. ((which is required for those Piscifun pushers))
I've signed up 2 other people on the program who have never even mentioned their purchases....they're just good guys on the forums.
Which is how I met my contact.
I don't owe daiwa any positive speak or favors. And I'd bet a steez...that Daiwa doesn't even know who I am.
These are the program rules. as they appear on an older order form
I cannot disclose pricing..not because it doesn't state it on the form. But I don't want to get anyone in trouble.
Though I receive roughly 30 to 50% off msrp depending on whether it's a rod or reel....and what it's retail price is.
Often times it's easier cheaper and faster to buy from amazon or ebay.
At the discretion of our Sales Representatives, Daiwa offers special pricing to influential anglers who assist us
in the promotion of our quality products.
The rules are simple:
1. Offer is limited to purchase of six items (rods and/or reels) per season.
2. Items must be for your personal use only and not be resold within one year.
3. Order must be shipped to your home address.
4. Valid through July 31, 2015
5. All orders must be signed by a Daiwa Sales Representative.
Shipping Charges:
Reels only: add $10.00
Rods only: add $20.00
Rods and reels on same order: add $30.00

I will say, this is the ONLY youtube channel I've found that reviews in a un biased way and goes into such deep details and crucial information but somehow still keeps it simple enough for fishermen to understand. Not sure how you do it Tackle Advisors but great video! It certainly helped me out in picking a surf fishing spinning reel.

I took a Penn Battle 2, 4000 into the Boundary Waters on a 70 miles trip. 50 by canoe, and 20 on foot. The battle stayed outside for all five days. Several days of rain, and one of which was a storm that caused a ton of blow down (aka trees fell over). To this day all Ive done is add the oil it came with and it makes zero noise or clunks. When the bearings start to go, Ill be upgrading them to fully sealed as well as dry lube on the metal surfaces. Would like to try the BG, but its hard to turn my back on what the battle has went through and laughed at.

Great review. I have had a battle 2 6000 for 3 years now and have caught multiple mahi/tuna on it. The drag and reel still work great with minor maintenance. We will always find small flaws with any reel, but I will keep buying penn reels in the near future.

Excellent in depth comparison. I'm fishing 2 Daiwa BGs in different sizes for about a year now. When new I did a tear down, lube and rebuild following your maintenance tutorial for the BG. Not because they needed it but because I liked to. They have been brilliant. They feel and perform so good up to a point that I wonder where I need my much more expensive Shimano's for. Love'm!

Had a blast testing The Diawa BG saltwater reels 3000 this past fall Salmon fishing. I was looking for a reel that friends and kids could use to beat the heck out of fishing Chinook / Coho Salmon. Skein and bobber fishing Salmon in fresh water streams of Michigan. Worked great, Great drag, Takes a beating... Not a loose screw one reel 500 salmon later.. We also had fun testing the Diawa Tatula 3000 &4000 , Shimano stradic 3000 & 4000 , The 2500 Stella, Diawa Revros 2500 and The Pflueger. The only reel we did not like was the Pflueger. Just watched one of your reviews for the first time... I liked your review alot !!! Finally someone who takes the reels apart and explains the interworkings of the reel with a materials list.. Thanks for the good reviews .... If you ever need a reel to review let me know i have a bunch.... I purchaed 15 different reels looking to see how they would hold up to all fishing. Steelhead,Salmon,Gills Trout,Pike ,walleye. We have a world class fishery here in Michigan. I fish alot... My father will fish 200 plus days per year. He recently broke the Stella he purchased in the early 90's .... the reel had a estamated 30,000 fish under its belt. I am kinda hoping they still make that kind of quality reel since i just purchased my first Stella this seaon 2018. My dad sent in his Stella reel for a cleaning. The man who cleaned the Stella my father owned said in 30 years he had never seen a reel look so used ?? lolololol Ended up charging a cleaning fee lol...

The battle vs bg comparison was fascinating. Kudos to you for pointing out the bearing noise at the end of the review. Those bearings are virtually dry in the new reels and they will fail [ask me how I know]. Penn definitely outdid Daiwa on preventing failure on the pinion bearing. I also like the fact that the carbon drag washers are keyed to the spool. That main gear on the shield is pitiful. It would last no time on snapper and amberjacks. Whenever you hold a spool up to the camera to show the line lay it looks like there is way to heavy a braid on the spools. Those spool line clips are just aggravating. Most of the time the flouro leader you are using won't begin to go under that clip. Really was a fun hour watch all in all. Good job!

Sooo, I lost my much used and loved older Daiwa BG20 Ugly stick combo yesterday, I still have its twin on a Crowley Rod. After much debate I chose the BG4000 as its replacement over the battle II. The BG20 landed some pretty big saltwater fish including a 35LB Mahi on 12lb test mono backed with braid. I hope the BG4000 proves as reliable. The clincher was the comment regarding the battle II wind knots. If not for that I would have gone with the PENN.

I own 3 out of these 6 egg beaters (BG4000, Shield 5000 and a 4000 Nasci). After more than a hard fishing year on the water, I must give it to the shield as it is still holding strong. aside of the overall quality of the shield (body Finish, not so strong handle and the looks of a $25 reel) it still looks and feels the same out of the box. compared to the BG which got very loose and wiggly after one season. One recommendation to the Shield is to convert it to a manual bail. Also, this is a tough reel to match/balance to a good rod, after many trials, I paired it with a Lamiglas Insane 9ft surf rod. you get yourself a great $200 surf setup. looking forward to seeing the Tsunami SaltX and what it would bring to the table against fully sealed reels in the market.

I run a Nasci 1000 on my ultralight rig for freshwater light-line finesse work. It services easily and runs like silk despite a good number of fights when I hooked into fish far bigger than my intended species. My issue is that I’m looking to replace my 3000 size spinning reel for bulkier freshwater finesse fishing. Between this video and my baseline experience with the Nasci, I have a couple great options on the table. Thanks for making such a thorough video; very appreciated from a guy who services his own reels.

Some of you out there act like you gonna be catching 1000lb marlin with these reels. One fishing outing here in hawaii I caught 5 yellow fin tuna ranging from 48lbs to 126lbs, on a battle 2 8000 reel with zero problems. The very next day I caught a 80lbs Trevally from shore on the same reel. Its been 3 years since I bought the reel and with regular maintenance, its still close to new. Since new, I've probably caught at least 80-90 fish average about 20-30lbs on the battle 2. The 3 main reasons why I went with the battle 2....fair price, easy maintenance, and a ton of parts available if needed. I love Daiwa BG line as well but they are a little harder to maintain.

paid $75 for socorro Sw 6000 from cabelas 2 years ago, fished the shit out of it, pulled stripers from 10-49 lbs at the cape cod canal and it still hold up well, drags was so good, gears were still perfect when i opened it, only problem i had was dropping it in the water while unhooking the fish, and the AR clutch got SW in it, i cleaned it out at the end of the season and worked just fine, best $75 i've ever spent on . still one of my favorite reel to this day :)

I did buy from the Amazon Warehouse a Tempo Apex Plus spinning reel for 23 bucks , it reads Magnesium Body but I doubt it lol but it’s a remarkable Fishing Reel and I’ve used in my 40 years of throwing junk in the water a few Top Tier Reels and had the pleasure of using a Staal on the Pier in Chesapeake a few years ago from an Elderly Gentleman who said hey “you gotta try this Reel” lol. I wish i had seen this sooner. My socorro sw 6000 is used as a bait chunking reel on the jetties. Now, 3 weeks ago it got dragged into the ship channel off the jetties. I jumped in (instincts kicked in, id never recommend doing this) and retrievd it. It was banged up and was completely submerged in saltwater for a few minutes. I figured that the cheap reel was done for. All i did was rinse it off, and one month later, it fishes and feels exactly the same it did when i bought it. For a jetty beater, i couldn't ask for more from a $130 reel.

Late to the show here. I have 2 tsunami shields I use for surf fishing. I beat the ever loving crap out of them (edit: and I’ve been beating on them for 3 years). Both have been dunked and taken rides in the sand fighting sharks. all I do is hose them off with freshwater when I get home real quick. Never missed a beat. I will add, both didn’t have the smoothest action at first but they have either broke in and the drivetrain has smoothed out or I’m super used to them now. Not slammer iii’s but still for me at this point, an AMAZING value.

Awesome video, again.A little small, but very important issue, that doesn't seem to be addressed very often is the size of the reel foot. I purchased a new surf rod, and my venerable Penn 8500 SS reel foot wouldn't fit into the rod Fuji reel seat. So, purchased a Penn Pursuit III to replace the 8500, and...the Pursuit III reel foot won't fit either. And, gee, my Daiwa BG 4000 reel foot fits into the rod reel seat just fine, so I have now ordered a new larger (to fit the rod) Daiwa BG. My grandfather used Penns, my dad uses Penns, but for spinning reels, I'm going a different direction. Great comment at 1:02:23 about bearings. Folks have a sense that stainless doesn't rust - wrong. Stainless is rust resistant, but not rust proof. Stainless metal comes in different grades, as well, and some bearings will rust more quickly than others if not service properly. Stainless needs servicing, just like any metal, just not as often or quite so diligently.Thanks for what you do!

I have several tsunami 3000 and 4000. I fish only salt water and I have not had one single issue with corrosion or bearings. What I have had is a bail issue on all of them where when you attempt to make a firm long cast the bail will close during the cast. This obviously makes you look like a casting pro lol. I’m not sure if there is a fix for this issue. On one of my 4000’s shields my main gear sheared some teeth. I have been back and fourth with tsunami’s warranty provider for over 6 months and have been unable to get repair parts. Last I was told if they didn’t get parts soon they would send out a new reel. I like the shields as far as how they have held up but the bail closing issue and warranty and parts availability have me looking at other options in the future. Figured I would share my experiences with them being I have 5 shields.

Be mindful that the Tsunami Shield may look good from a simple reel break-down review, but in actual use, people are experiencing a great deal of quality issues with those reels. A friend of mine who works for a major tackle retailer told me that those reels are having a very high return rate for quality issues; mainly the dreaded "Tsunami clunk/Squeal" after a few uses. Quality seems very hit or miss and the company doesn't seem very keen on customer service. Might want to do some additional research before buying.

Thank you very much for the in-depth review! Excellent and to the point. Granted it'll never cover everything everybody gonna wanna know but you did a great job and contributed tremendously to fishing community, as well as manufacturing process (for those who cares to listen and I know smart ones are listening). My main reels are Daiwa BGs, and recently got a few Fuego LTs, amongst baitcasters, conventionals. I have yet used Fuego LT much and will try to remember to update once I've got a few miles out of those. I fish from surf and banks, typically red/black drums, speckled trouts with occasional bluefish, and typical trashes. Once in a while I do kayak as well, thus the reason for Fuego. Keep up the good work and thank you again fro LA!

How has your Fuego stacked up against the BG? If the performance is similar I will definitely go Fuego LT, based on the sole fact that it is lighter. Biggest complaint I've heard is that the Fuego LT can flex when handling larger fish.
@willh.2155

@@STiMPUTELLO Recently I used more of the Fuego LT than BG, because it's lighter. And I finally broke down and fixed the line lay issue of the Fuego, by adding one extra plastic shim. Both of my Fuego's got this problem out of the box. Sad really. If you google, you'll see that this is a very common issue. About 2 weeks ago, me and my son went fishing, we got several 20+" reds on both BG and Fuego. Performance wise, no difference. Weight wise, I prefer Fuego.

"premature bail trip." Thank you. So much easier to have a tech term that doesn't involve swearing. - I seem to run into it a lot with my spinfisher v 4500. Great distance, though.

You did the soccorro dirty, had my 8000 for a while now and have had no problems just rinse with fresh water, the drag is pretty smooth, 27 lbs or drag and a perfect open oceans or shire fishing reel

The biggest failing part in some reels wasnt talked about....the bail arm pivot lever. Its one of the cheapest parts and receives a ton of stress. Its probably the only part in a reel that slams to a stop every time you cast. Ive had it break in my penn battle as well as an abu revo sx (2 times). I hand close my bails always, but still. I stumbled on your videos, good stuff, gonna follow. Thanks.

Bob Strempek I agree. I've got 2 Abus with broken bail arms in my shed. Never had a problem with any Shimanos or Daiwas. It just so happens my only 2 Abus both have broken bails!

Bob Strempek Thanks! will do. I just think its a shame that both reels have the same problem and aren't 2 years old yet. And my wife seldomly fishes (her reels). They're not high end reels but I've had Shakespeare reels last longer without problems that have been fished way more than my wife's reels. I'll never buy another Abu spinner again. I shouldn't have to deal with this when 1 of the reels is not even a year old.

This was a fantastic reel. I have used both the BGs and Battle 2s. when it comes to the handle being one piece or it breaks down such as the battle 2, I prefer the battle 2 style. when it comes to storage under the gunwales on a flats boat you usually run into storage space issues. being able to loosen the handle and fold that handle in it allows it to fit better and also don't run into the issue of handles being kicked. which has been a problem. but to each their own. but awesome review!! Tight lines!!

Fabulous job Scoob! I don't watch a lot of reel reviews but it cracks me up when you have some joker "review" the reel by reading the specs. Or when the same guy says "Brand X is lighter in the 2500 size than Brand Y but it holds less line." Ummmm yeah, perhaps because it a smaller reel? Reminds me of "But this one goes to 11." Can't wait for albie season the put the BG back into service. After your vid, I may have to give the Tsunami another shot. I was sure it was going to win the top turd prize

I am not an engineer either. but think of this. When you drive forward in your car it is more like the Diawa full contact gearing. When you back up or coast it has less tooth to grab. Its in their design. Need to move the spiral gear deeper to engage more tooth, on the other real. Same reason that the gears are made the way they are., for pressure and drive, gearing in reverse lets them slip more than bite the pinion to ring gear.
@scotthettel949
@scotthettel949 6 жыл бұрын
I am an engineer and I work in the gearing field. A full contact pattern on the drive side is an indication of a worn out gear. The optimal pattern should be contact in the center of the tooth and should only be 50% of the tooth face. A reference would be ANSI/AGMA 10-10-F14 (Appearance of gear teeth- Terminology of wear and failure). None of those gear trains have anything even close to optimal contact pattern, however they all appear to be cast gears and I'm sure they are only designed to meet Commercial 1 standards (AGMA Q5-Q6) if that. Will they work? Yes. Are they optimal? No. What would you expect from a reel built to make a price point? Nice informative video BTW.

Much to my surprise, a fine lightweight reel has been discounted into the $100 range. It's an older model, but certainly a bargain at the price. I've had one for a few years, and have no issues at all. It's only available in the 40 size, but the Okuma Helios reel for $99 is a steal. It showed up via a "partner" on the Walmart site.( tried to post the url, but it didn't transfer well. )

The Nasci reels are very popular on the Texas coast I've heard they hold up very good.I also like the Sahara reel although I've change all my drag to carbon fiber which I cut out myself from carbon sheets.The Okuma RTX is also a cheaper reel that holds up well.👍💪🎣
