Thanks Gene, really appreciate the comment buddy!! I answered this on messenger but wanted to put it here as well in case anyone else has this question. I believe the bearings in the handle are sealed, in which they require no maintenance. From my understanding, once they go bad you just replace them. All I do is put the drop of oil behind the knobs as you see in the video. A lot of my reels are 4-5 years old and the handles are just as smooth as they were when I bought them.

Insert a pick into the hole in the end cap and lift it off. Underneath is a screw. Remove that and you'll see a bearing on each end of the handle shaft. These bearings are 8 x 5 x 2.5 mm.

GREAT videos on taking apart a reel, cleaning, lubricating and then putting it back together! I followed your steps to complete both my JM Carbon and JM Signature and they are SMOOTH beyond belief now. I did notice there were a few extra washers under the handle on the Signature, but I had my schematic and easily found what order they went on. The only areas I had any "problems" (if you'd call them that) were putting the smaller gear with the white piece back on, in the correct way, but there is only one way and you darn well know when you get it. The other was learning that when it's time to reassemble make sure the casting trigger is not "Down" (engaged). I just couldn't get things to fit nicely until I got the trigger back up (I had it down from greasing it). Thank You so much for putting these vids out here. I never had the confidence to do this until I watched them and now I'm sure to get years of happiness out of reels that I really like!

Hey Mark, really appreciate the comment man. It's comments like this that make me want to continue what I'm doing. It's amazing how much smoother you can make your real than how it came from the factory. I prefer to oil some things that they grease and then they over grease on top of that (which is just to get through the warranty stages) but it kills performance. You're correct on the extra washers, the Morris has a 14-lb drag system compared to the 10-lb system on the reel in this video. Like you said, most of these parts can only go on one way, just take your time, keep your schematic handy and you'll do just fine...plus you get the satisfaction out of doing it yourself. Thanks for watchin man and good luck this season!!

G'Day mate! I've just watched all three vids and read all questions and replies. Best how to I've seen 😍 I've allways serviced all my reels using whatever grease available. I've even used axle grease which only slows things down a tad. Living out in the sticks has its disadvantages hey 😂 I've ALLWAYS disassembled and placed parts in order so assembly is no problem. Thanks for the vids and many thanks for speaking clearly so us Ausies can understand you 😍🇦🇺✝😂

I noticed I had a broken line guide and got the part free from the manufacturer but I was nervous as hell to take it apart even though I'm pretty mechanically inclined. The two pressure washers needing to face each other was clutch! The diagram for the reel doesn't show those details. You're the man!

great video, I just tried finding a parts breakdown online. I have a Quantum GMTi 1070 burner that the spool thumb release sticks on regular, but releases OK on "flip". Pretty much exactly the way I do my reels except I actually use Yamaha Marine grease with REM oil or 3 in 1 oil. You could run grease down the bead of the gear cover to seal better. Keeps fine dust out. Also, one-way bearings like silicone grease, it helps the rollers grip the shaft when it's doing its anti-reverse thing.

TJ, Big bass season coming up in MN and getting prepared. Lately I've been reading diff articles on lubs to use with reel cleaning. It seems like there's been several mentions of Corrison X and Reel X. Several of the users swear by it. I know you like the Hot Sauce but do you have any experience with either of the X products? The X products have a molecular bonding that seems like it's impervious to the elements, mainly rust.

Was wondering if you could help me. I bought a used pinnacle that was seriously dirty, was used for salt water fishing. I cleaned it, greased it, oiled it up. Followed your vids as much as I could, mine had a few less bearings and washers. Long story short, after I engage the real when I spin the handle it doesn't pop back into position. Besides my trouble your vids have been an immense help. First I had a dirty real that felt sticky, now I have a smooth clean real that doesn't function. If you have any tips, thanks

Hey man great video best one I have seen by far. I clean all my reels annually and learned some things that I wasn't doing. Hopefully I can improve on what I was doing already. I was wondering about the anti-reverse bearing. How do you know how much oil to put on it once it is degreased? I have always heard putting too much oil on them will make them slip makes me a little timid to mess with it. Also after you rinse the bearings with water, do you vibrate them again in fresh degreaser and rinse again or just blow out? How long do you use ardent cleaner before changing it out with fresh cleaner? I have been using that stuff for awhile but have always sprayed it on and cleaned the parts. Going to try soaking them this year. Sorry for all the questions fixing start the process of 20+ reels just wanted to make sure that I do it all properly. Once again thanks for the great videos and you have a awesome channel with tons of great info.

Hey buddy, appreciate the kind words. As far as how much oil to put on, I only put just a few drops and then wipe the Ardent swab like I showed. After about a month's worth of use I took a few reels apart to check things out and there was never any oil running down the drag washers, it all stayed in place. I feel that's a good amount, and they were ran all year like that with no issues. It's something you've got to keep an eye on until you have the amount to use down. Once the bearings are rinsed in water I just blow them out. I clean about 20 reels and I change it twice with that amount of reels. As long as you wipe off some of the grease before you soak the parts it doesn't get too clogged. Don't be sorry for the questions man, that's why I'm here and feel free to send me a message anytime either on here or Facebook. Good luck and appreciate the comment!!

How tight do you screw the star drag down ? I just did my Johnny Morris reel and destroyed a fiber drag washer . I have no idea how I did it unless I screwed the star drag down too tight .

Just till you feel it's snug...you have to tighten it down to a certain point to get the handle back on. No clue how that would destroy a drag washer...

I've been cleaning my reels since the 90's. I don't go all out like you did but you defiantly did somethings that I've never done. I had a Quantum EX500 reel before I started/knew how to tear down and clean. I did my best to get grease up inside on the big gear but my drag started to fail. I finally decided to tear into it and found the drag washers were oily probably from the grease I was improperly forcing into the reel. I was told they should be dry. I ordered new drag washers. I used hot soapy water to degrease everything and reassembled the reel. I got another 12 years out of that reel before Quantum/Zebco stopped making parts or they sold out of there inventory for that model. I've heard that most new reels drag washers require oil or grease now so how does one know what is to be used on the washers or if they are to remain dry? I was just talking to my fishing partner earlier this evening about the bearing and if you can oil them or if they are sealed bearing. His reply was he read somewhere that some reels have shielded bearings. If that's true, are shielded bearings maintenance free? I've never degreased any of my bearings, just wipe off and re-oiled. I've already cleaned and lubed 6 out of my 9 tournament reels so any changes I do will have to wait another year. A old fishing video I have talked about maintenance of reels and it stated, gears get grease, bearing get oil. You state in your video on the side plate that the one way clutch bearing which you degreased, you apply oil to. I figured since that contains roller pins and has a sleeve that surrounds it, it would also need grease for smooth operation, not oil. Can you explain why you choose oil to apply on the one way clutch bearing?

Hey Mike, carbon washers can be ran dry if you want more bite, but a fingerprint of grease is what I usually do with all my drag washers. Spool bearings are only oiled and should never be greased, but the other bearings within the reel are greased and really don't require any maintenance. I degrease them to make the reel feel a bit smoother, but once you remove the grease you have to maintain them. I've noticed over the years that a greased one way bearing can and will slip especially in colder weather...I haven't had any issues oiling them.

When you push on the thumb bar and then turn the handle does the spool engage? If not then the washer with the teeth that I mentioned that is under the main gear is probably upside down. If that is not the case then is your drag all the way loose? Check those things first and then get back to me if you have any further issues.

have you ever tried okuma before? i have the helios, and it preforms flawlessly, although i did throw 68 huddleston swimbaits on it for a while, that was too much for the reel but it still preforms outstanding, and for a $200 reel that's pretty good, smooth like butter and cast a mile, i'd like to try the helios air next, only 5.9oz, that's pretty good
