What doesn't make sense to me is that there is so much anxiety about a shrinking workforce and yet China has millions and millions of unemployed young people. So maybe a shrinking population isn't that bad, there will be less unemployment
@申莫归Ай бұрын
Because the lives of those aged will have to be paid by those who are employed by taxes or other ways. This will result in a shrink of consumption. Once consumption shrinks, companies make less money, and then they will dismiss employees. That's a cycle.

China is a manufacturing based economy. But no one in China really wants to work in manufacturing. So people learn white collar professions or get university degrees which do not meet the demand of the local labor market and end up being unemployed.
@wyw876Ай бұрын
The unemployment numbers over there are high bc they have tens of millions of young people that fought off their fellow students to train up to be web programmers, and several million jobs for factory work that only earn 1/10 as much. Thus all the social movements to "let it rot" coming from the hundreds of millions of young and early working aged people who are seeing all of their promised futures shrivel up.

as of 2024, 40% of young indians dont have a job and 28% of young chinese are unemployed. if demographic is a big problem for china and india, both of countries should have best employment among all countries, yet the reality shows otherwise, chronic massive unemployment and massive unmet basic service. sums up, more working population is good for wall street and their multinational companies because of unlimited cheap slave labors, but it is doom for country like china, india, indonesia and others to deal with chronic uneployment with suppress cheap wage along with never unmet basic needs like healthcare, childcare, daily living standard and affordable housing.

It is a problem that money cannot solve; it’s the sum of all conditions within the country drive this. The movement of peoples to cities generally drive a lower birth rate due to increased childcare costs. Other factors determine the speed of the decline (social systems, wealth etc.). Quite a few Asian countries have experienced this; Japan, South Korea to name a few. Measures of economic strength are backward looking and only indicate the capacity to attempt to slow it. Look at Japan and S. Korea for example, has it reversed? The answer is no.
