It was recorded as an unpublished song on August 24, 1927 and again on July 27, 1928. It was introduced by Harry Richman and choir in the musical film Puttin On the Ritz (1930). According to Irving Berlin's Complete Lyrics, it was the first song in the film to be sung by an interracial ensemble. The title derives from the slang expression "put on the Ritz", meaning to dress very fashionable. This expression was itself inspired by the opulent Ritz Hotel in London. The successful phonographic recordings of the melody in its period of original popularity from 1929 to 1930 were recorded by Harry Richman and Fred Astaire, with whom the song is particularly associated. All the other record companies had their own take on this popular song (Columbia, Brunswick, Victor and all the dime store labels). Richman's Brunswick version of the song became America's best-selling record. In 1983, his cover was an international success for the Dutch singer Taco. Released as a single by German Polydor, it is among others 4th place on the American Billboard Hot 100.
