Yes, icicles are a sign of heat escaping through the roof, soffit, or facia system. Going to be spendy to fix/replace but worth it.

The reason the icicles are on your house is because you are losing lots of heat from your attic. If your house isn’t insulated real well you will have lots of icicles hanging from your eaves. A roofing contractor told me that. When I first learned that, every where I went I looked at other people’s houses to just compare. I guess that’s silly but I did. We had more blow in insulation put in our attic when we started seeing couple of icicles.

Exactly. I believe taco said in the past that the rooms on the top floor are cold, which means it needs insulation at least from the ceiling. Companies that do insulation often have thermal cameras that can scan the outside to see which walls are letting too much heat out. Improper insulation can also cause icing and mold in the walls. Hope he gets it looked into.

Hi Taco, those icicles are from heat loss, but worse that is the ice dam built up on the left side of the roof. I also question if that is missing paint or rotted wood on the eave. If so, then a there is work to be done before it affects the framing timbers in the roof and the wall studs and sil and top plates. Imo, it's best to diagnose it now and get it repaired in good weather. I haven't seen the rest of the roof, but good shingles have a 25 year life. In Maine we opted for a standing seam metal roof. The most practical and economical at the time. Are you seeing any water seepage on the ceiling inside? Good sign if there is none, but I wouldn't wait too long. Taco, make sure you’re not getting roof leaks in the attic, those icicles cause ice dams which causes the melting snow to back up under the roof shingles.
