Simeone's Atleti conceded 4 for the first time since 2012 and I realize that the xG numbers suggest that that shouldn't have happened, but sometimes there are intangible aspects to the game that xG can't account for, such as those first 2 goals for Barca. They may have been "fortunate" but each of those attempts were deliberate and more difficult than some of the chances Felix and Savic missed. That says a lot about the head space the two sets of players are in. Barca played with lots of belief also factor in how they had to come from a goal down and hold their own 10 v 11. I think a lot of the reason why Barca didn't bottle here had to do with Xavi. The managers job isn't just tactics, it's also player motivation, Xavi did a fantastic job of this last night for that reason I'd give him a 7 or 8. As for Simeone he actually got his lineup and tactics wrong, hence all the subs he made to try and get back in the game. He managed to at least have a reaction though, but ultimately he couldn't inspire his team to create a clear goal scoring opportunity after Barca went down to 10. Also, rather embarrassingly, he lost the mind games to Xavi. For that I'd give him a 4 or 5. It is simply unacceptable for Gavi, an actual child, to be scoring a header against a Simeone team 😂

Xavi can easily have Busquets drop between the 2 CB while the fullbacks keep the width high like wingbacks, but that takes something from Traore who likes to stay wide. Having Busquets drop between the CB's means Young and Gavi will have to play as a pivot with the fullbacks keeping the width while Traore and Torres play in the half spaces close to the striker. When Busquets stays in the middle with Young, Alba can form the back 3 with Torres out wide on the left for Gavi to push high into the 10 half space on the left, Traore in the right half space and Dest at right wingback space. A good performance, and Barcelona are building but this was a somewhat lucky performance. The XG goals suggest we should have only scored 1 goal this game and Atleti created better chances. Oblak faced 4 shots and saved none of them which is very uncharacteristic of him. None of our goals came from our forwards and that’s who you depend on for goals. In a one-off match, you can easily underscore or overscore on xG, but across a season, the xG is very, very close to the total goals you score. It probably only varies by about 5 goals over a season. This is basically what Pep talks about when he says he doesn't focus on winning, but instead on playing well. Good teams don't practice "winning". In face it's impossible to do so. You can only practice all the individual skills and strategies that help you control games, score goals and defend. xG tells you if your plans on scoring goals are likely to succeed. It's like saying "I'm going to become a millionaire". Easier said than done. The correct mentality should be "I'm going to try to work hard and be innovative in business so that hopefully I earn 1 million dollars a year.

I do not agree with those ratings. You ignored that Xavi totally killed Simeone's switch in tactic for the second half when he introduced Correa. He adjusted tactics again when down to 10 men and nulled the pressure from Atleti and even pushed them back (do we need to remind of Roma & Liverpool?). This was a 10/10 masterclass by Xavi SCHOOLING Simeone though he is STILL learning and without experience. Fullbacks is not his fault, he and we all know the team needs reinforcement in those positions. Simeone switch to back 5 made them less offensive & it totally took Felix out of the game after he was being a threat and Barça took control and they still could not stop the attack, letting in 3 goals.

Very happy for Barcelona I haven’t watched the football from 2014 to 2020. I have one question. What happened to Atlético? They won the league back in 2014. I’m Real fan but I was amazed how Atlético were playing. I liked their philosophy of counter-attacking football, the underdog position in the league behind Real and Barca. Plus the manager was great Since then I don’t recognize Atletico (so does Real and Barca but they’re dealing with the rebuilding their squad and financial situation). Maybe I’m wrong but in my opinion Atletico has lost their identity over the years.

This is probably the best football analytical channel we have currently. Channels like TalkFCB are garbage. I agree with everything stated. I would have preferred to see Dembele swap for Ferran in the 75th minute. I think Adama, Ferran and Dembele would be the ideal front 3 for Barca right now.

Surely Xavi watched Brazil's last game, in which Tite played Alves as an inverted wing back, whilst Alex Telles made a back three with the center backs. Brazil dominated the build up play with this set up, allowing Coutinho and Paquetá to play almost exclusevly between the lines

Simeone's biggest mistake was to move João Félix from the flanks to inside. This made Alves stay more as an inverted wingback.

xG is not a good parameter to measure both teams performance for this match ..... I'm pretty sure AM have that xG since Barcelona shut the shop after 60 min (due to Alves's red card) . They were already too far ahead in the game and it was the right tactic to park the bus.
