I thought both teams started out nervous, making many mistakes - incomplete passes, lackadaisical movement, unmatched wavelengths, etc. due to Liverpool’s high pressing, and City’s blocking of passing lanes. Ultimately, it came down to some flashes of individual brilliance to get the score ticking, but in hindsight I feel City did nit live up to their potential with the many missed opportunities.

A great Game but I'd say Salah saved the day for Klopp there , I didn't see Van Djik doing anything at all & it seems the injury has taken his force. Kops were lucky with ref decions as usual so the game was almost perfect. You can't have a player like Milner makin hard tackles & not getting booted & that changes the direction of the game pretty fast. Look at those sleek passes made by Ederson there, damn way way better than many mids out there. De Bryune was off & so was Robertson. Rodri still was a very good & made a couple of nice holdings , passes & what not an incredible save of the match. Bernardo finally doing his thing that he used to altho nobody to capitalise. A good Match but again officials were Bad.

Vvd didn't really show up because city looked to operate in the flanks, particularly where milner was located. Only KDB made a couple of runs. But they mostly used the flanks. At first I thought city were going to use the tactics against Chelsea when I saw Bernardo or rodri create that diamond with the back three but then the forwards didn't press as aggressive as they did at Chelsea. Its difficult to press Liverpool cause they too naturally play with a high line..
@rachitdang7453
@rachitdang7453 2 жыл бұрын
@@living_craft Chelsea also don't generally sit deep, they also keep a high line, but if we take the example of February game at Anfield (although Liverpool didn't have proper CBs), City's pressing was top notch and Alisson is known to misplace passes when under pressure especially when shown the wrong foot.

@karlpk3907

Very good analysis from you again. Always look forward to your breakdowns. What was interesting to me about this game was Pep's "experiment" if you can it that of making Grealish a false 9, as you note, when Grealish has spent most of his career so far as a left sided attacker. Of course, this is in an effort to get Foden on the pitch in his natural position, ALSO on the left, and of course with his body type and skill Foden could never play a false 9. Grealish LOOKS like a false 9, has the skill to be a false 9, but if you're asking him to play that position out of the gate against LIVERPOOL!!...well that may be a bit too much. At least for now. I guess we'll see what happens. Stay tuned. To me the greatest player on the pitch today was Mo Salah. The goal he scored was astonishingly brilliant, dribbling more or less through 5 defenders to single-handedly score. It's something you might have seen, say, from a 17 year old Wayne Rooney playing against a bunch of U19 players who would never get beyond League 1. But this was against Man City!!! Holy crap!! Klopp isn't experimenting with Salsh. He's on the right, with carte blanche to run at defenders and juke them so bad they break their ankles, and, as the situation warrants, combine with teammates or drive to goal. His performance was beyond amazing. Do not be surprised if his score in this game wins EPL goal of the season.
@sirrash510
@sirrash510 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of great points made here, nice work! I think maybe the reason Pep preferred to use Foden as a winger instead of Grealish is that first he knew Milner will struggle to keep up with Foden's speed And also, we shouldn't forget about the defensive responsibilities as Grealish isn't really that great at tracking back, so Man City would've found themselves in many 3VS2 situations on the right side
@karlpk3907
@karlpk3907 2 жыл бұрын
@@sirrash510 Thanks. Yeah Foden was THE danger guy for City. I think that Pep lusted after Harry Kane -- and who wouldn't?-- because he is that once in a generation player who can play both a traditional center forward and False 9, often in the same game! As a result, I do believe he may think of Grealish as his next best option at that position, with the correct body type and technical skill...but does he have the brain to play it? In my view, the false 9 is the most difficult attacking position in all of football. It requires not just a lot of technical skill but a unique ability to know when to play withdrawn, when to drive to goal, when to check and lay off. All of this in the center of the pitch, with multiple angles to attack or pass through, and to defend according to the defensive game plan. Pep is the one responsible for (or guilty of, as you see fit) for changing the modern attacking game where all of your five or 6 attackers are basically midfielders playing up front. Few act a "role" -- say, this guy is the orchestrator, this guy is the target man, this guy is the 9, this guy is the winger. A Modric or a Totti are anachronisms now. That's why it was interesting to me about moving Grealish. Was this a one time thing for JUST this opponent? Or part of a longer term plan for Grealish? Inquiring minds want to know!!

It's hard to say that either team suffered damage to their aspirations when it's a genuine debate about who the draw suits better. If the draw suits either team better, it's only marginal and its doubtful that it will have a meaningful impact on the rest of their season. It usually comes down to the way you choose to frame it. If Liverpool had equalised twice then a draw would feel better for them. The fact they lost their lead twice makes it feel worse. City could feel better because they got a point away from home, but could also feel worse because they wasted their first half dominance, or because they only got a draw out of their best ever performance at Anfield with a crowd. I don't think there was anything to separate these two sides at all.

I think Liverpool shifted to a back 3( in build up phase) in the 2nd half. They were eaaily able to build up to the final 3rd because of that. Also to match that , Pep pressed in a 4-3-3, but his press was ineffective ( in my opinion, since they had spaces between the lines).

This was a great game. Liverpool fans would crucify me, but tactically Klopp and Guardiola don't even come close. Liverpool's strength is around the wing backs attacking high and giving width and the quality of Salah and Mane. Salah was exceptional in this game and Liverpool generally play the same way for every game, but if Salah or Mane have a good game then you're gonna struggle...if both have a good game then it's gonna be really tough. Guardiola is easily the most adaptive manager in the PL and is a master of tactics. This might not always come off but he has the ability to constantly adapt his team and the movement from City in this game was a joy to watch. Two great teams and was a great game

In my opinion, one must also analyze the movement and positions of the players of either team when the opposition has the ball in three parts of the pitch. I will like to add that while City pressed high, there were moments in the game where City forced Liverpool backwards when the ball was in the middle third of the pitch so as to create more pressure in Liverpool's defensive third. They narrowed down Liverpool passing options through the middle and wide by settling into a narrow 4-5-1 formation which would spring into a 4-3-3 or later a 4-4-2 and helped them keep an upper hand in the first half. However, this went missing in the second half, especially after the first goal, giving Liverpool time and space to pick up passes.

That is why I say Chelsea winning the UCL won't still bring them to this kind of level! They are good and title contenders but they will never ever be as good as City and Liverpool are now and also City and Liverpool don't even consider Chelsea rivals because they are the greatest rivals of each other atm! And also Tuchel is nothing compared to Pep and Klopp and if you are a football fan and not a delusional Chelsea fan, you know it and you will surely agree with me!

The problem is VVD have a good long passing. VVD more dangerous than Fabinho, coz he can bypass city midfield with his long passing to Salah (always happen in Pool match) . So I think thats what Pep thought. So he choose to free Fabinho instead. Such a chess match

Tbh first half was okay (last 10 minutes being some of the worst football I have ever seen in 1st half), Milner should have been sent off, Foden should have killed the game. But 2nd half was banger once Salah became Messi. And City adapting accordingly was also great. But City should have prevented GK distribution reason being Alisson plays wrong passes under pressure, he and Matip were given a lot of space.

@Tenman Gava They can get Haaland once his contract expires. But Mino is a pain the ass. So Kane, Moreno, Schick, Weghorst and Isak can be ideal no. 9s. Pep's ideal target should have to buy a proper forward (although Gabriel Jesus was supposed to be that), but Jack is not bad, the reason he was bought was because of his creativity in the wide spaces to exploit defensive shape of teams like Chelsea but Pep is doing wrong by playing him at the center. Play him according to his strength and he would flourish.

Liverpool didn’t play there best football. Perhaps with Thiago and Alexander Arnold in the side, the attacking would have been even more potent. For not playing that well and getting something out of the game if not that Fabihno chance is okay. Man City will always have most of the ball for people saying they should have scored. This should have would have thing doesn’t help. They would always have most of the ball and probably create more chance. They are what they are, like Sir Alex Ferguson said back then against a Pep Barcelona team. If Man City doesn’t score against an opposition like Like Liverpool then they have themselves to blame. How City was playing should be expected in every game, but oppositions with quality players shouldn’t be underestimated. Had Fabinho scored they would have said Man City didn’t deserve to loose the game. With the Milner situation I agree with the refereeing. That was a Klopp mistake playing him there instead of Central Midfield. Perhaps Neco Williams is much younger and quicker than Milner. I guess the best stadiums in England are Anfield and Old Trafford. I would have hated to see a red card despite the valid argument regarding Milner. Liverpool has a lot of improving to do. I have seen better team performances and this one wasn’t Liverpool‘s best. Hopefully everyone returns healthy from the international break and Mo Salah seriously needs a new deal.
