I feel as if Simeone knew exactly what was coming and only played the game to get 1 goal. He was ready to take blow after blow from Liverpool. He has to play Barca and Madrid on a regular basis, he is used to being attacked, and withstanding pressure like Liverpool gave him last night. He got the away goal and Liverpool got nervy. Yes Adrian made a mistake, but this should’ve gone to penalty shots, and not down to him in my humble opinion. Oblak was amazing and kept his team in the game.

You people are missing something I've noticed When was this Liverpool played the competitive extra time? Atletico and simeone knows how to play the knockout rounds. These guys played the drained extra times with real Madrid 2014, 2016, and supercopa 2020. They are not easy and work like wolves in parks. For sure they got luck but that comes with hard work, perseverance, and struggles and so don't forget about experience of extra times they played. Simeone wanted to drag Liverpool to the extra times he knew that would be the dead zone. Those players had suffered alot, he only needs a bit of luck, and that's what happened

For folks that don’t know Atlético de Madrid and Simeone tactics , they exactly knew exactly what they were going to be faced . Adrian didn’t made a blatant error , he was just playing high tempo football the CB are more to blame for the first Goal , destroying is easier than creating football , and just like Simeone said at the press conference they exploit the opponents weakness, they did exactly the same against Barca in 15 min in Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup . In all seriousness though you’re spot on concerning the first goal, first of all Adrian isn’t Alisson, so trying to get him to play like Alisson is ridiculous, Alisson is one of a kind. Also, that ball was passed at least twice if my memory doesn’t fail me before that finish by Llorente. To me not many keepers are making that stop under those circumstances, and I’m talking world class goalies. Both finishes from Llorente were clinical. But I’m definitely asking questions about that back 4 and why they weren’t able to break it up before the shot.

I understand Adrian made an error but having been a Barcelona fan for a long time, I have seen Ter Stegen and before him, Bravo and Valdes make similar such errors quite a lot. And all these errors are down to the tactics deployed by the manager. Adrian's error was different from what Karius made in the final, those were purely individual errors where tactics couldn't be blamed. Honestly, why the hell was Liverpool attacking when leading 2-1 on aggregate?! They were playing so high up, Adrian didn't really have much options to pass to as Atleti pressed Liverpool deep inside their half. There was no midfielder available to receive Adrian's pass. It was just suicidal and I would blame Klopp for Atleti's 1st goal.

It was again, bad accuracy and not great defending that was the cause behind no goals. Atletico did not stop Liverpool from missing those chances. Liverpool stopped themselves due to poor and inaccurate finishing.

The problem once more in my opinion is the absence of tactical awareness from Liverpool coach, the game should have not gone to extra time if few changes were made in 2nd half, like putting Origi early and Minamino (why do they buy him in the first place) switching to a 442 with Firmino and Origi playing centrally because they can dribble in small space, Minamino providing option for speed in either flank. The tactic of pushing Salah & Mane in for allowing Roberston and TAA space every team already know that and expect that even in PREMIER LEAGUE. Another problem which is relevant also not enough rotation,so he do not put enough confidence on the substitutes. However the boys gave it all,dominate all the game and if Allisson was there it would have been a different result. That is why he need more quality on the bench same as Guardiola to fight on all 4 fronts, the same mistake made the team lost the league last year. Congratulations for Atletico, they won with their strentgh, everyone know already how they played,but they are not going to final with this tactic, Oblak will not make miracles every game, like last season,but they are a force the reckon in any given day for their fighting spirit. The second clash of contrasting styles for this tie saw Liverpool successfully open Atletico up on numerous occasions.... between a stellar performance from Oblak and poor finishing from Pool Atletico survived long enough for a situation to pop up where Pool made a mistake and they could clinically pounce on it. Apart from the tactical battle, I'll point out that a lot of the outcome is tied to the quality the respective players bring. This is a rebuilt Atletico and are literally in transition so they aren't as effective executing the while tactical plan. In real matches, very few times do teams actually execute a flawless tactical plan. This match shows just how tiny the margin for error is. Unlucky by Pool and gutsy yet fortunate by Atletico.

If I was Klopp. I would've matched Atleti with the 4-4-2 with Firmino and Origi playing central. Mane and Salah out with Henderson and TAA would be the 2 midfielders. Liverpool need a creative force in the middle of the park and without Coutinho they haven't had it. Fabinho or Milner would've gone to RB as they are both excellent there. The match in formation would mean Liverpool had 4 strikers for 4 defenders and because Atletico's midfielders tucked inside Robertson and Milner would have a lot of space out wide to get quality crosses in for Origi. If I was Simeone, I would've gone 3-4-3 with Gimenez there. Trippier would've had more space as well as Lodi. With this they would've been able to get out of the press easier using the FBs as outlets. With the front 3 pressing Liverpool's backline with Henderson Liverpool would only have the wide areas as outlets which Atletico defends efficiently.

When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. That's what happened, what a great match to watch with a lot of firing crosses and stopping them, clearing it for the 120 minutes. Really Atletico were lucky even though they done a great defense. A lucky crossbar happened, many of the saves done by oblak rebounded in the box, it also didn't went for the Liverpool players legs. When Liverpool got the lead, they should have been concentrated in the defense for the next minutes, where everyone went front, only 4 of them in the defense couldn't stop the llorente's goal. @LDAR Boy Yes, I know the final score. But still Klopp was better. Someone was better in the first leg, though. Liverpool had enough chances to finish the game in the 90 minutes. Legendary Oblak stopped them. They hit the woodwork as well. That's beyond Klopp's control, obviously. But it shows that Atlético didn't defend well - as they actually did in the first leg. Since Atlético's game plan was to defend, they didn't do it well. And after Adrian's mistake and first goal for Llorente, Liverpool had to take risks, and Atlético naturally scored a 2nd and a 3rd. I actually supported Atlético and jumped like crazy when they scored, but that beautiful irrational side of football doesn't influence my rational analysis and this is my opinion :)

What gets me is that everyone is blaming Adrian, the first Goal was a mistake clearance, but why didn't Van Dijk takle Llorente? That would have stopped the goal. Also the second goal was mind boggling, the defense were just watching morata run up, last season, when Messi was doing the same runs constant pressure on the man, but when they saw it's morata, they just watched, is like they underestimated him. And when Morata gave the pass, there was no effort of the defense to pressure, only a last minute attempt of James Milner to actually takle. The third goal was just a well taken chance. Atletico got it's chances and actually finished them, not like Liverpool who got chance after chance and they were either poor finishing of amazing performance by Oblak.

5% of Liverpool's shots were goals, 30+% of Madrid's were goals. You don't really need to know anything else I think. Hard to win when your opponent is six times more efficient than you are yourself. They had 34 shots, but only 11 of them on goal. So a lot of pressure but two thirds of it was completely ineffectual, effectively clearing the ball for Madrid. The shot stat at the end was 11 on target for Liverpool, 6 for Madrid. Not really as lopsided as it seemed while the match was on. I'm just never betting against Simeone again. He has proven that he can beat anybody with this tactic, and Atletico could definitely go all the way. Not favorites or anything, but then they would never play well as favorites anyway. Hiding behind their guard while waiting for mistakes is what they do.
