Was a MAG (M240) gunner back in the day, weapon and was a pain to carry around. But the robustness, reliability and accuracy were superior. You had to change positions for the enemy not to get a fix on you. Three guns worked together, two of them "talking", and the other "walking". The riflemen usually did precision fire, humped lots of ammo, assaulting a position and could be tasked with carrying the wounded.

I laughed when he made the comment about ambushes in Afghanistan. I saw a dude crack off a belt out of a PKM at our convoy and when he was empty, he just dropped it and hauled ass. In his defense though, we were shooting back with a Mk 19 and M2s across the board.

The PKM did get a facelift though, in the form of the PKP Pecheneg, it's not a great deal different, but they did improve a few things over the PKM.

Tho the pkm is from the 60s and the mk48 is modern u should see the pkp then has way tighter groupings a non detachable barrel and a little better ergonomics than the pkm as well as less heavy as the pkm
@Puzzoozoo10 жыл бұрын
Russkiman96 Pity it wasn't a pkp vs the mk 48 then, but then to do that they'd have to obtain one, and as its only used by the Russian, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan army, that wouldn't be possible.

Biggest fact of PKM that Kalashnikov turns weakness of rim (potential jams etc. ) to advantage of machinegun using his ingeneering
@Mortablunt9 жыл бұрын
The PKM is older, lighter, cheaper,more reliable, more accurate, and more controlable than the MK48. Why are we not using this? Just weld on some rails if we really must have optics -- this masterpiece is too good to not use!
@Happymali109 жыл бұрын
Mortablunt The US forces use the Mk because it uses the NATO ammunition.If they'd use the PKM they'd have to stock up different ammo, and only the Squad Machine Gunner would be able to use the gun, as no-one else would have ammunition for it.

@DieOnlyifITellU211 жыл бұрын
So would a machine gun really. A bullet hose is no good if that's all you're doing. A.K.A. Spraying rounds in a general direction of the enemy. That was one of the many purposes to the assault rifle concept: lightweight, accurate, capable of automatic fire, and could be used for multiple roles.
@timewave020124 жыл бұрын
The lines really start to blur between machine gun and designated marksman rifle. The Mk48 is similar enough to the FG42 to adapt its closed-bolt semi-auto capability, and the SCAR, already having a long and heavy barrel, could use the HAMR developments to switch to open-bolt when it gets hot enough for cook-offs to become a concern.

You need a class 3 license I believe it is from the ATF to have full automatic weapons. Then I think a MK48 would cost over $10,000, then the cost of ammo. This is for an individual to legally own one. FN does make a semi auto MK46/M249 SAW that you can own without an ATF license.

I found it weird that the PKM and the newer Pechenegs have no forward handguard or grips of any kind. The only feasible place to hold when shouldering it is the ammo box, which is probably awkward to do so. Both the PKM and the Pechenegs are light, which beg to be shouldered. The latter is to be a true Squad Automatic weapon,. Of course you can hold the bipod but that's just even more awkward. Russians design good weapons, but why this odd thing?
@Unit9876543218 жыл бұрын
+Xuan Vinh To Because it is not easy to fire full sized rifle caliber rounds on full auto while holding it. And it's not accurate either. Look at how much more effective Pecheneg is when on bipod at 0:06 in the following video: watch?v=o9rmo3AXTAo
@VT-mw2zb8 жыл бұрын
+Unit987654321 OK, I guess it make sense then. Still, would it better to have the option to shoulder it in a pinch? for most long gun, it always help to have support of some kind, but still, will you prefer to have the option? I guess you will.
@Unit9876543218 жыл бұрын
+Xuan Vinh To Soviets have the RPK which is the squad support weapon equivalent to the M249 SAW. Those are be shouldered and fired as they shoot the 5.45 caliber ammunition. While they are putting down fire it may let the PKM gunner(s) to get into position and setup.
@darrynbrown92118 жыл бұрын
The current pkm/ PKP do have traditional handgurads.
@becauseiwasinverted52225 жыл бұрын
The PKM was a general purpose machine gun, it was meant to be used as a SAW among many other roles but it wasn't optimized specifically for that. Handguards probably wouldn't do much to increase controllability and since it's best fired from prone they must have figured they might as well save some weight. Still works fine.

maybe... just think that pk was accepted into service in 1960..that's 55 years ago. With the current state of technical progress, one should expect that a gun that's 55 years old, has to be much inferior to modern guns. And this one is not. It may be "slightly worse" and even that is questionable. Any credits to the designer, perhaps?
