Most special forces guys are cool as fuck.. we did a training rotation at JRTC at the same time as an SF group and crossed paths with them a ton.. talked to a bunch of them, all were extremely down to earth guys. You'd never know they were SF if they were out of uniform.

I was going to high school when you were in BUDS. I know because your Father was my Drafting/tech drawing teacher and he mentioned his son was in training to be a SEAL. He was a great instructor by the way! Independence High School freshman year 86/87. tell me if im wrong but I'd never forget that name or the fact that he was really cool. Small world.

Thanks Mark, during my days in the Australian army all we had was the steel Vietnam era helmet, which I still have. And it looks like new as we never took it with us. The only ballistic protection we had was the bush hat. But I have seen footage of our troops now and it hard to tell them apart from yours, with all their go fast gear and helmets . Really enjoyed the content, cheers

The IBH (5th one) was not only good for the time, it actually was very ahead of its time. It wasn't until more than 10 years later with the Ops Core helmets (like the last one shown) that runnning your headset integrated in the helmet become an option. But it was something the IBH already offered in the late 90's/early 2000's.

I joined in 2007 and started with the PASGT. That leather headband is brutal. They came out with the suspension upgrade kit for us Airborne guys, came with an H harness and self stick Velcro for the more modern pads. Then the ACH came out with all that stuff already on it, plus an NVG shroud. The pads and suspension still sucked, so I bought my own ACH and put Team Wendy suspension and pads in it. I stuck with that forever because I thought high cuts were gimmicky. Then I bought one and wish I had done it years ago, so much lighter and being able to integrate earpro is a game changer.

I served in the Taiwanese army in 2015. In basic training we had the US M1 helmet. Heavy as hell. I remember we always place a piece of sponge on the top of your head a buffer to the steal helmet.

Remember kids: Ballistic helmets are generally NIJ level IIIA rated - will stop most pistol caliber threats and fragmentation - they will not stop rifle rounds (unless you get really, really lucky). There are a few solutions on the market that incorporate add-on "tiles" in addition to a base NIJ lvl IIIA helmet to provide NIJ level III protection (Rifle: 7.62x51 M80 and 5.56 62grn). The best plan is just not to get shot in the head in the first place. Thanks for the presentation, Mark!

@@christophersnuffer1972 - "ballistic" helmets are Level IIIA rated. The issue is that IIIA rating is for soft armour worn on the torso. NIJ allows 44mm of backface deformation. Since there is no actual ballistic helmet standard in north america, most helmet manufacturers have adopted NIJ IIIA as their working standard. So, yes, a .44 mag or .357 sig round won't necessarily penetrate the helmet, but the BFD will kill you (or nearly so). Europe uses the VPAM standard which is a helmet-specific standard and limits the BFD as well as the shock to the head (measured in joules). VPAM helmets are also shot randomly including on any bolts that penetrate the shell. It's a very tough standard to meet, but FBI, DEA, and others in North America have adopted it in the last couple years. Busch Helmets makes an excellent lightweight VPAM-certified helmet.

Loved your jab at airsofters.. to which we both actually participate.. but hey all in good fun. Airsoft is a great start for future warriors tho. Just as information - the M1 helmet for parachute operations is a different helmet liner - the parachute helmet liner has a pad at the back, and the airborne chinstrap mounted in it. The chinstrap for the M1 helmet is threaded though a gap in the airborne chinstrap to keep the whole thing together. The Kevlar did stop some rounds (there is one in a museum at FT Bragg that stopped a 7.62x39mm on Grenada.

In order, top to bottom, oldest to newest: M1 Helmet Liner M1 Helmet RBR S4 Helmet (Was also in use all over SOF in the early 90s-Early GWOT ending about 2004-ish, and coming in variations of RBR F1 and RBR F6) IBH Helmet (Almost exclusively SEAL except for a few Pararescue and CCT guys using it) MICH 2001 (Used all over SOF but very limited compared to SEALs) Opscore FAST LBH (Exclusively NSW)

I have seen videos of M1 helmets stopping 9mm and 45 ACP easily enough. Wiith a dent to show it but quite survivable. The most common pistol caliber a wearer of the M1 might have faced would've been 7.62x25 Tokarev, which will punch through it at combat distances because 7.62x25 is a scary ass pistol round. In fact, its probably one of the most fitting SMG cartridges out there.

The rarest helmet of the lineup is actually the black UK AC200 helmet right after the K-Pot. You'd be lucky to find one for sale anywhere in the US. Although not as expensive as the IBH, it saw very, very limited use with US SOF, pretty much just for training. Was mainly used by SAS in the early 2000s

Superb video, liked and s’bd. The final helmet is the type I still carry today (Just stays in or on my work bag. Good for a climbing or bike lid too. It lived on my desk for over a year then one day just down from work, gunmen on the roof. Police response was heavy but not overly swift, no one was injured luckily for whatever reason they just tossed down material, stones etc. but when I went out to get people in the building for cover, I didn’t feel confident having my dome naked to incoming debris, frag or worst case .308s or such not that it’d help much. Since then it once again travels with me) cannot speak of them highly enough. Great to attach job spec items ie strobe, IR, nods etc very handy size especially with maritime (and my height) and not as weighty as my old pasgt. An Lt in Afghanistan took a 47 round directly to the front of his and he lived which is lucky af, then I heard on the g/vine that a guy took a similar hit and unfortunately he was not okay. Over the heavier (and possibly) hotter lids, I seriously dig this. Good one, thank you. Stay well out there and enjoy your day.

Nice break down on the evolution of helmets, thanks, looking to purchase one soon (not for airsoft), so was helpful. You have a good tone for speaking, try not to pause and gather your thoughts mid sentence. I am sure its because you could have probably stretched this video out to two hours with all the stuff you know about helmets, but it will make your videos flow smoother. You smiled, were specific when needed, had good annunciation, did not use alot of jargon and, kept your hand motions low, and drawn in to your body, which allows your viewers to focus on your topic, all in all I hope you make more videos.

It was earlier in the War, Special Operations was taking regular ACHs and high cutting them to fit Headsets easier. It was through that evolution you get your modern Fast Helmet. That and they would take Already cut Tanker Helmets and kit them out. As long as you cut the kevlar with the correct saw and you seal the cuts with Epoxy, and put bumper edge around.

Super cool to hear about history no matter what venue! I hated my Marine Corps issued steel pot helmet. The adjustable staps were worn out and quite frankly we all knew they offered no ballistic protection beyond deflecting small rocks fired by a kid with a homemade slingshot. Jungle boots. Sucked. C-rats. Sucked. Wool glove liners. Sucked. But leather gloves are not warm without the wool. Never got an M9. Never saw a Humvee. It's not surprising to anyone, but when you join during periods of transition you're likely to be issued everything old and crappy until you're in awhile. It's still gonna be the coolest thing you can do with your life, but none of us knows that until decades later. My teenage Marine experience is unique and not one of my childhood pals can say similar things about staying home to go to college. I left. Came back. Graduated from college. Then became an officer in a completely different field of study and work. It might not be your first choice or way, but my fellow veterans of every service (who weren't drafted) can back me on saying those late teens and early twenties in military service are irreplacable and were worth doing again.

Old Marine ANGLICO here, I like the M1 Steel Pot because it has other uses over a helmet. You could wash your clothes, wash your self, and cook your food in the thing. Try doing it with the others. I never got used to the Kevlar Helmet because I didn't like looking like a German Soldier. I got out before all the other cool stuff came along.

Old school helmets like M1 Steel Helmet, PASGT and MICH provide more coverage for the users in conventional warfare such as trench warfare. However, newer helmets like the FAST provides better mobility and hearing for low density conflict such as counter insurgency operations.

I actually wear the Airsoft one... bought off amazon...$25 shipped... its a bump helmet that holds your ele-ear-pro and light. When I spend $3000 on NODS, and work on a 2 way range... I'll upgrade.

Yes, that is a helmet used today by many on active duty.

That is an Ops-Core LBH (Lightweight Ballistic Helmet), so yes, it has ballistic protection. Most non-ballistic bump helmets usually have some type of venting holes on the shell. Pretty easy way to differentiate whether a helmet has ballistic protection or not.

Level NIJ 3a, can stop up to a .44mag JHP. They are still made mainly for shrapnel but I can’t remember the V50 off the top of my head. If you’re interested it shouldn’t take too long of a google
